ArcheAge - Ding, I’m level 50
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 22 August 2014, 3:32 pm
Wow, that went by in the blink of an eye. I started playing the ArcheAge Alpha on July 20th. I hit the current max level without even trying. That said, I have put in an awful amount of hours. Around level 10 or so, I left the theme park rails behind to strike out on my own and fell in MMO love with AA. I’m very pleased with the outcome. If this weren’t an Alpha, I’d be considering an alt in order to try a pure caster class and experience another racial zone. But since it is, that will have to wait.

ArcheAge: Gear at Level 50

After reviewing the components necessary to upgrade my armor to Conqueror’s and beyond, I decided to use the cloth version gifted to me by our guild leader Fannel. Of the available roles as a Paladin, my preference in a group setting is to heal. In ArcheAge, all classes can wear every armor type. However, cloth provides better stats for healing roles. You can augment your armor with gem slots but you’d still be behind the curve compared to someone in cloth using the exact class build.

ArcheAge – Farm Wagon, Huuzah!
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 19 August 2014, 10:04 am
Last night our guild joined the “we have a farm wagon” club. Fannel, Brokenwind and I were online pissing and moaning about our inability to grow the stupidly random thunderstruck trees needed to craft one. No one knows for certain the circumstances that cause a tree to be “hit by lightning. There are lots of theories but the rarity of the occurrence makes it nearly impossible to know for sure. Our guild has planted illegal tree farms consisting of hundreds of trees, without producing a single one. Others have done 1K plus trees and have come up empty too.

ArcheAge - War on my Doorstep!
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 18 August 2014, 12:23 pm
I believe my previous posts have established that because of the nonconsensual PVP, ArcheAge isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea. Yes, you can level to max and hardly ever encounter PVP if you forgo seeing all of the content or focus on commerce in non-PVP enabled zones. However, game design makes it such that you may still be impacted financially, even when you escape direct combat.

ArcheAge Alpha - Slowing Down
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 14 August 2014, 5:13 pm
I've played more than enough of AA to confirm that I'll be playing at launch. I've achieved most of what I wanted to try out during Alpha. I've certainly played more than I have during a pre-release for any other MMO. I still have plenty to look forward to at launch. I've done so little of the quest content and haven't stepped foot in a single dungeon. I did some healing in a max level PVP zone while guild members were farming XP, leveling alternative skills sets and unique drops. No one engaged enemy faction while we were at it. It reminded me of the impromptu detentes on PVP servers during in Burning Crusade. Farming motes was bad enough without fucking around with each other. This particular set of are elite, tightly packed and respawn rather quickly. Jacking around with each other would mean insta-death and greifing each other back...

ArcheAge Alpha – Crafting Armor
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 8 August 2014, 12:38 am
I was level 36 rolling around in level 20 armor until recently and I’m not alone. There are two contributing factors to the level and armor gap. Firstly, the primary source of obtaining gear is by completing quests. I won’t retrace what I already discussed in this post.

ArcheAge Alpha – I HAS HOUSE
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 6 August 2014, 12:19 am
Belphagore, the guild member who donated a large house to serve as our guild hall, gave me the deed to his old house. Like what!!??!! I had to purchase an item from the Cash Shop called an Appraisal to facilitate the transaction. Luckily, I had some left. It’s not the house design that I wanted but this beggar certainly won’t try to be a chooser.

ArcheAge Alpha – Weekend Fun and Shenanigans
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 5 August 2014, 12:24 am
I had a great time in ArcheAge this past weekend. I believe a key to that is being willing to participate in all that the game has to offer beyond the safe PVE. I did a little bit of everything minus dungeons. I feel like I always have so much to do of my own. Combined with guild activities that don’t require max level to participate, I don’t feel like I want to spend 30 to 60 minutes in an instance in an alpha.

ArcheAge Alpha – Keep Your Enemies Closer
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 4 August 2014, 12:17 pm
Last week I mentioned that I’d given up on owning a cottage in ArcheAge because of the click-war participation needed to get one at this stage. I used the components I’d assembled to build a ship instead. After all, it’s only alpha and I didn’t see the need to spend more time on the affair.

ArcheAge Alpha - Building My First Ship!

Having given up on the idea of owning a house in ArcheAge, I turned my attention to building a Clipper. The Clipper is the introductory ship used for open seas transportation. Its speed also makes it popular as a Pirate ship, where it’s used to harpoon targets. That’s tackling for EVE Online players. *smile*

ArcheAge Alpha - No house for you!
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 31 July 2014, 10:53 am
Space is often an issue in a game where player housing isn’t instanced. Unfortunately, ArcheAge is no different. If fact, it’s compounded by the player’s need and desire to possess both types of properties – house and farm.

ArcheAge Alpha - Earning Gold
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 30 July 2014, 11:06 am
At some point, all MMO players have to figure out how they’re going to earn money, especially if they decide to hang in for the long haul. ArcheAge is not too different from other MMOs, in that it contains the classic revenue generating opportunities. However, it does contain options that are rarer and as such, require explanation.

ArcheAge Alpha - How Classes Work
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 29 July 2014, 3:07 pm
I thought I'd put out this quick post on the class systems for people who are just entering beta. Hopefully, this will provide some quick start value. ArcheAge Class System The class system in ArcheAge is very diverse. Similar to Rift or Final Fantasy XIV, you select multiple classes that are combined into a single profession. There are 10 base classes to choose from yielding a total of 120 different play styles / professions. Each of the 120 options has a unique class name. However, the skills selected from that trio will differ among players. Of course, there will be cookie cutter builds because we as gamers, sometimes lack originality and go for min/max specs.

ArcheAge Alpha – Terror on the High Seas
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 28 July 2014, 3:52 pm
I’m no PVP aficionado but don’t I shirk from it either. I go in knowing that I can lose while making my best attempt to win. I don’t cry over unsportsmanlike behavior. I strategize about how to get even! I started my MMO career in games where players routinely killed each other. My longest consecutive run in an MMO was World of Warcraft and I rolled on a PVP server, having followed my guild from Asheron’s Call 2. It was back then, one of the most highly contested servers and spending 2 hours trying to get a 40 man raid into Molten Core was a typical Sunday afternoon. Forming teams to protect members trying to level in Darkshire and Southshore was a way of life. You took your lumps while a newbie, protected others when you grew up and dished it out once you were geared. As a result, my point of view about dealing with PVP in ArcheAge (AA) is framed by that mentality.

ArcheAge Alpha: By the sea, the beautiful sea
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 28 July 2014, 8:00 am
I’m a straight-up undeniable sucker for a beautiful world. I’m a card carrying member of the “it has to look good for me to play it” club. Adventuring in detailed, atmospheric and lush worlds is part of the MMO magic for me. ArcheAge on the water has no equal in my MMO experience. It’s simply breath taking. Mining along the shoreline, fishing or standing by watching players load their ships, is a visual treat. I’m very intrigued by the trade and economy side of the game but I haven’t participated yet. To be honest, the effort + cost + knowledge has been beyond me thus far. I recently found a guide to getting started. If time permits, I hope to take a whack at soon. I know there are members of the guild I joined that will help me but I’ve been entrenched in doing something else each time the...

ArcheAge Beta
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 26 July 2014, 12:26 pm
My Paladin at level 27 Like WildStar (WS), ArcheAge (AA) wasn’t on my radar. I’d hear of it but not having much success with Asian imports in the past, I wrote it off. In between MMOs again, I started watching Twitch streams and noticed more and more AA offerings so I started watching. Initially, I didn’t see anything that would make me scrounge for a BETA key / invite or purchase my way into either, so the thought of the game passed. My son started playing GW2 again but not with much regularity. Bored by the lack of a more traditional expansion, he began another search for an alternative. Since he’s a PVP fanboi, he decided to pay his way into the AA Alpha. I messed around on his account for a bit which piqued my interest. That combined with finding more varied game play on Twitch, I saw enough...

Goodbye, WildStar
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 23 July 2014, 1:51 pm
For me, another MMO bites the dust. The waning interest left me wondering if I was past leveling characters in the genre. Then I considered that GW2 wasn’t all that long ago. I leveled 2 characters to max and enjoyed every minute of it. I also stayed very active in GW2 for several months after. Nope, this was merely a waning interest in leveling in WildStar. What Happened There is something about the world design that made it feel chopped up and artificially segmented. It kept reminding me, I was in a game. The only thing I can liken it to is Star Trek Online and Age of Conan. I mentioned before that the humor was engaging but at the same time, I wondered if it was leading to the disconnect I had with my character. The game doesn’t take itself too seriously so by association, I wasn’t taking the...

Adventures in WildStar
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 8 June 2014, 3:25 pm
I hadn’t planned on purchasing WildStar. MMOs and I haven’t had long relationships in quite some time. GW2 had the most promise for me, being the best leveling experience I’ve had in many years. It also contains 2 of my 3 favorite classes of all time – Guardian and Mesmer. However, I bailed several months ago over the lack of persistent PVE content via expansions or campaigns like GW1. My patience for mediocre game play has run dry. If a game isn’t fun right out of the gate, then I’m out. I have too many real life responsibilities, stresses and balls in the air to suffer subpar excuses for entertainment in games. I’d just as soon read a book, watch TV or catch a movie. As far as gaming was concerned, I was content waiting for modules of Star Citizen to be released. Warrender and Sarzan suggested I give it...

Hearthstone: Giving Ranked Matches a Try
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 25 April 2014, 1:24 pm
Off to Ranked Matches The only game I've been playing lately is Hearthstone. I like that I can play a session for as long or as short as I like pretty much. Typical match takes 20 to 30 minutes depending. Until recently, I was only playing in 'casual' mode where you play against other players but there's no progression ladder. I only have 4 legendaries and their not appropriate for every deck I play. Depending on the class and deck build I’m using, it’s rare that all four are used. Last night I was matched, once again, with a player whose WHOLE DECK was legendary. They didn't stomp me as much as they should have, so skill is a factor. If fact, I stole and/or obliterated several of their "I win" cards because I play taunt-less but heavy control decks to counter the onslaught of legendaries I sometimes encounter. Even...

Gaming - The Promise. The Dream.

Although this is explicitly about Star Citizen, it captures in a perfect and precious way, why I game. Why I always encouraged my children to game. To dream larger than life. To encourage imagination and creative thinking. To exercise at an early age, the skills of reading, cooperation, logic and strategy while having fun.

Star Citizen - This is my hanger. This is my ship.
Posted by Mystic Worlds [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 18 March 2014, 7:00 am
Viewing holotable in my hanger I’ve said it many times. I’m more in love with the idea of EVE Online than the actual game play I experience. When I’m in “that” particular mood, drifting among the stars is relaxing and inspiring. For me it's something undefinable but there’s some sexy about EVE. Before I played the game, I'd read a good bit of EVE fiction and lore. In preparation for the 9th expansion, Empyrean Age, I purchased and read the companion novel. The first time I played Star Trek Online I recall wishing that EVE were a combination of what I liked in STO and the best of EVE. I wanted an avatar in EVE. I wanted space stations with players scurrying around. I wanted to walk up to a player or corporation owned kiosk to purchase goods. Maybe even see fights break out amongst rivals. I wanted to fly...
