Drfited away – but still playing games!
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 25 April 2011, 11:37 am
My blogging career definitely tracks my MMO play activity. If I’m playing any genre but MMOs, I don’t seem to take the time to blog about it. Since I’ve been actively blogging here, I played some League of Legends, a lot of Starcraft 2, Team Fortress 2, and a lot of single player games that [...]

LoTRO F2P – An Early Look
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 9 September 2010, 9:31 am
I managed to get the LoTRO F2P update downloaded last night, after adding the Turbine Invoker and Turbine Launcher to my firewall exceptions. Never had to do that before, but it worked. The update wasn’t all that large and I got to play for a little bit. There are interface updates – the experience bar [...]

LoTRO and free to play
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 8 September 2010, 8:37 pm
The Lord of the Rings Online goes free to play in two days, on September 10th. As a current subscriber, I get an early look at the new point store, new zone, and lots of other changes, rules, limits (or lack of limits if I keep subscribing) and, I’ll admit it, some confusion. I’m not [...]

Why I’m not allowed to decorate the house
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 5 September 2010, 2:32 pm
I’d choose prints like this, and my wife would threaten to leave me. I found the above site from a link in the Gamers With Jobs Dwarf Fortress thread. Someone was pointing to a story Tim Denee drew about one of his Dwarf Fortress games, and I found the link to his store at the [...]

Gameloft giving away free iPhone games
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 10 May 2010, 2:11 pm
I don’t have an iPhoneTouchPad, but someone on The Well mentioned Gameloft is giving away free games in celebration of their tenth anniversary. If you’ve got an iTouchPadPhone, follow ‘em on Twitter and pick up some free stuff. I’m trying to get an iPad through work, but it’s an incredibly political item to requisition, apparently. [...]

Guild Wars (player) fail
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 30 April 2010, 9:43 am
I bought Guild Wars through Steam the other night. NCSoft does a security bit at login where you have to type in the name of one of your characters. I suppose this prevents scammers from hijacking accounts, and I’m in favor of it. However, I screwed myself. I made a new character, made up a [...]

Guild Wars on sale on Steam
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 28 April 2010, 11:33 pm
The Guild Wars trilogy is on sale on Steam for $19.99. It’s been on my list of “I should really try it” games for a long, long time, and the sale did the trick. I’ve heard good things about it, mostly from the Van Hemlock podcast, and I think I’ll definitely get my money’s worth [...]

I thought this was an Onion story, but no…
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 18 April 2010, 10:48 pm
“Game teaches sex through the eyes of a superhero“ From the article: ‘Players can either be a man wearing a condom on his head named Captain Condom; a virgin named Wonder Vag; a boy named Willy the Kid who believes size doesn’t matter or Power Pap, a sexually active gal.” Wonder Vag? Really? Please, tell [...]

Games and Social Innovation
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 26 March 2010, 4:40 pm
Tyler Barber, of Rebel FM podcast infamy, tweeted last week about a TED talk given by Jane McGonigal called “Gaming Can Make a Better World.” Damn, that’s a lot of links in the first sentence. This ain’t no flat blog post. It’s relational. Anyway, I’m glad I caught Tyler’s tweet because Jane McGonigal has some kick-ass ideas. [...]

There and back again
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 16 March 2010, 9:55 am
Yep, I’m back in MMOs, back in LoTRO. This was the longest break I’ve taken from MMOs in the 11 years I’ve been playing them. I wasn’t game-free during that time; I played a lot of Team Fortress 2, Dragon Age, League of Legends, and a bunch of other stuff on Gametap, including fairly regular [...]

What I played – 2009
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 8 January 2010, 1:59 pm
I can’t do a top 10 list for 2009 that’s anything other than completely subjective. I don’t have time to play a huge variety of games, so I can’t compare what I do play to recent releases. I rarely pay full price for games any more, so I’m off the new-release train, and that prevents [...]

The Year I Fell Out of Love
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 4 January 2010, 9:35 am
I’ve never done reviews or predictions here. I’m not nearly timely enough in my posting to pull it off. That doesn’t mean I don’t mentally review the past gaming year, though, and this New Year’s brought the revelation that 2009 was the year I fell out of love with MMO’s. I’ve gone through multiple stages of [...]

Holiday update
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 23 December 2009, 2:03 pm
My gaming life has been decidedly non-MMO in the last couple months, and when I’m not playing MMO’s, I tend not to blog. There’s something about the shared MMO experience that makes me want to talk about it, while single-player games are more introspective for me. I’m playing a lot of games lately, mainly Team Fortress [...]

Eve’s Certificate System and other shiny improvements
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 23 October 2009, 2:36 pm
None of this will be new to current Eve players, or those of you who keep up on Eve developments.  I’ve never intended this site to be a news blog, so take my oh-so-late comments with that in mind. I unsubscribed from Eve last fall, just about a year ago. There have been quite a few [...]

Really, Sony? Order 66?
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 15 October 2009, 11:28 am
In the month of October, I’ll be giving money to two MMO companies that worked hard to regain my attention and my business. Both CCP and Turbine have excellent marketing plans designed to entice former players into resubscribing. Sony Online Entertainment, on the other hand, basically just gave former players the finger. Instead of taking a [...]

And the winner is…
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 15 October 2009, 2:38 am
Instead of jumping into Darkfall or Fallen Earth, I resubscribed to Eve Online last week. Three things influenced my decision. First, I already own Eve, and my wife and I went out on the $50 I would have dropped on a new game. Second, the videos from the Alliance Tournament on CCP’s Youtube site made [...]

Return to Eve
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 15 October 2009, 3:16 am
It’d be wrong to say that I resubscribed to Eve Online just mention CrazyKinux’s Eve Online Fanfest schwag contest, but the contest is a good reason to link to a great blog. Plus, who wouldn’t want a fistful of Eve goodies? I resubbed because I realized there are things in Eve that I haven’t accomplished. I [...]

Restless gaming
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 6 October 2009, 9:58 am
I’ve been spending a lot of time reading lately, instead of playing games. I thought I was just burned out on MMO’s, but single player games are causing the same restless feeling I experienced with MMO’s. I’ll sit down at night to play, and no matter what game I choose, I don’t want to play [...]

Why DDO didn’t make my “Now Playing” post
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 14 September 2009, 1:38 pm
Most of the posts on this blog end up being about MMO’s, which is why it’s been quiet while I’ve been bored/on hiatus with MMO’s recently. My last post talked about playing Ryzom, but I didn’t mention that I also tried out Dungeons and Dragons Online now that it went free to play. That’s probably [...]

Now Playing:
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 13 September 2009, 11:56 pm
Ryzom, of all things. I’m still bored with most things MMO. I can’t get excited about Champions Online (and haven’t heard much to say I’m missing anything), I can’t get too excited about resubscribing to games I’ve already played (WoW, WAR, Eve, LoTRO, anything Everquest), and I’m still a little burned out on MMO’s anyway. The only [...]

Summer break
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 18 August 2009, 9:40 am
I didn’t intend to take the summer off from blogging, but that’s exactly what happened. Between work getting a little crazy (anyone else getting hit with budget cuts, wage freezes, hiring freezes, etc.?), spending a lot of time outside with my daughter, and taking a summer class for grad school, life has been about everything [...]

Umm, Pete?
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 18 August 2009, 9:49 am
I hate you. Pete at Dragonchases just set off my Self-Loathing alarm. This video totally pulls my “marry me, Felicia Day” trigger, yet  simultaneously mocks people who might harbor feelings for game avatars…or celebrities on YouTube videos. Great. I can’t stop watching, and I hate myself for it. Thanks Pete! Damn you Posted in TheGuild [...]

PS3 Motion Controller
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 5 June 2009, 11:04 am
One of my favorite viewing experiences from E3 this year is the video about the PS3 motion controller. It’s so cool that, for the first time, I can see a potential console purchase in my future. This blog is almost exclusively a PC-centric domain, but if games evolve in the direction Sony is demonstrating, that [...]

What I’ve been playing: The Hunter
Posted by /random [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 13 May 2009, 2:46 pm
Yep, still playing The Hunter pretty regularly. As a person who never, ever would have picked up a hunting game on my own, without the glowing recommendations of the Gamers With Jobs podcast crew, I’m pretty surprised the game has hooked me this hard. It’s a subtle, elegant game, and if you haven’t tried it, you [...]
