Episode 33 Discussion Thread

'Kessel Run explained' by hijammer
Submitted on 2008-04-02 23:19:44 CST
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Kessel_Run

Han Solo claimed that his Millennium Falcon "made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs." The parsec is a unit of distance, not time. Solo was not referring directly to his ship's speed when he made this claim. Instead, he was referring to the shorter route he was able to travel by skirting the nearby Maw black hole cluster, thus making the run in under the standard distance. However, parsec relates to time in that a shorter distance equals a shorter time at the same speed. By moving closer to the black holes, Solo managed to cut the distance down to about 11.5 parsecs.

Funnily enough, In the original draft of A New Hope in 1976, the description for "Kessel Run" is put as follows:

"HAN: It's the ship that made the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs!"
Ben reacts to Solo's stupid attempt to impress them with obvious misinformation.

Even in the final version of the script, the parenthesis attached to Han's line states that he is "obviously lying."

'Rigs are…' by FarScapeIII

Darn it, rigs are awesome in every way except one thing, I’ll NEVER get to actually USE them. What is the point if you can’t ever be able to afford them?

I don’t need a Mother ship even but those stinking rig slots are staring me in the face.

Any one who can even put them on can already understand what they are, either that or some isk buyer might need the info on them.

but what they hay I guess I'm WRONG as useual. pft.

Thanks anyways it was still fun to listen to you guys, even when talking about something that was advertised as if we all can use them but figure out it is only for the top 10% 20% no i'm sure people will tell me 90% can use them easy no problem, what ever. thanks you guys STILL sound fun to listen to even when listening to something that pisses me off. lol, I just laughed at my self. :p

'Legion of xXDeathXx and the Kessel Run' by Druadan

Another great podcast, keep it up.

About Legion of xXDeathXx, I flew with those guys in 7-KXBJ (now Etherium Reach) when I was in Ethereal Dawn. They're Red affiliates, not an XxAngelxX project, and good guys too. Very capable. We just called them Legion of Death... no need for all those Xs over comms. "Zix" also, (their ticker is X.I.X if I recall correctly).

As far as I remember, Han's Kessel Run reference using parsecs as a unit of time was a genuine cockup on the part of the movie's creators. The mistake was set straight in the Expanded Universe books, where one of the authors took the initiative and made the Twelve Parsecs statistic a reference to the shorter distance you'd need to cover if you skirted close to the black holes in the Maw.
