In this 14th episode of Through the Aftermath, Shawn and Jonathan tackle yet another somber topic with the bombings of Japan's Hiroshima and Nagasaki during WWII. To help learn more about this subject, our listener Charles sent us along some great references for further reading:
- Hiroshima: Historians Reassesses by Gar Alperovitz
- Prompt & Utter Destruction: Truman and the Use of the Bombs Against Japan by J. Samuel Walker
- Hiroshima by John Hershey
Also be sure to check out the Wikipedia page that gives a general overview of what happened.
Next episode will be another email show, as we need to purge the steady stream of feedback from the listeners!
- Fallout 3 Mod of the Show: Turn your F3 weapons into classic Fallout weapons!
- Video of the show: BBC's documentary on dropping the bomb over Hiroshima
- Also... RUSH!
Sound bites were from Harry Truman's speeches during and after the bombing occurred.

P.S. I lived in Nagasaki for about 3 years... the people there were gracious and friendly to me.
The amazing thing is that you really would never know the place was hit other than the few monuments remaining. There is more than one "shadow" left as a monument in Hiroshima. Radiation levels are not higher than normal in Nagasaki now... and people there have fairly long life spans.
Also, it has been a while but I used to work in the industry. I no longer have my clearance and it's been more than 15 years now so there are something’s I can speak about though usually I keep silent.
A few things, a "dirty bomb" is a conventional bomb with a radioactive element added... there is no nuclear reaction at detonation. Neither bomb used over Japan was a “dirty bomb".
Oakridge, Happy Valley, and a few other towns were a surprise because they were build from scratch nearly over night for the project.
The uranium seized from the German u-boat was not from the sub engine... German u-boats ran on diesel. The uranium was requested by the Japanese for use in their own nuclear weapons program... They were probably 8 months behind us... imagine if they had gotten there first.
Technically speaking, the cold war was fought with nuclear weapons... which make the two bombs used over Japan look like firecrackers.
I believe more than a million lives were saved through the use of these bombs. We may not be as fortunate next time. but never forget this, even were we to completely disarm .. or perhaps because of disarming... there will be a next time.
