Well, I can always look back on episode 3 with fond memories of how I enjoyed the podcast. Just so you know Ali, Marc did an excellent cast when you were gone. Episode 3 was really good.

I think I pretty much had enough when Ali said "tinkle". I also don't think the word "retarded" should be thrown around lightly. Lot's of problems with this cast again.

Nice to have you back Telstar! I was beginning to miss you. :)

I was almost afraid you were starting to like it. But if you did, i would have nothing left to strive for. Episode 5 will also be free to download. I will look forward to your comments.

Telstar, are you trying to get Ali to like you through reverse psychology?

You know you are, Telstar. Come on now, you like her, you want to huuuug her, you want to kiiiiss her! :)

Well Marc is the middle man, all you guys got that out there? Admit it, you think she's, just... too... SEXY!

Of course personaly I'm cool, she's ok I guess. I havn't noticed actualy :) Just another awesome podcaster on virginowrlds. ;)

Hi Marc and Ali, btw yes! the Lightning round is back for Episode #4, good goood good goood! YES!

Awesome psych on making us think the lightning round was gone...

The WoW joke /emote point to joke... Do you guys think Ozzy Ozborn & MrT are in the same guild?

I can't win though because I have not payed WoW yet. never mined my joke sucks fireballs, lol.

Question! Do you got to be on the PvP server to attack the towns? When ever I get around to playing WoW I figure I will go for the PvP server.

You'll do anything to escape the boredom of raids. One of our warriors once posted a screenshot to show off his ui, but his windows taskbar showed he had a rather nasty gay porn site in the background.

City Leaders just get zerged down in a few seconds so nobody can be bothered getting worked up about it anymore. If you take the time to organize a defense force you arrive to find a bunch of mage portals and a dead leader.

Actually I have a man-crush on Marc and I think Ali might be getting in the way of a potential love connection.

Ali seems to be very into WoW, she knows her stuff and is a real player but I can't see leaving my wife of 20 years for a WoW player. She would have to play EQ2 for me to even consider it.

I'm sorry guys, this is nothing personal at all (I appreciate the nice "thank you" from the last show) but I didn't realize the show was going to take such a turn for the extreme low brow. I recommended the show to my listeners based on the last episode and I'm going to be really embarrassed when they listen to this one. I understand that your show has an explicit tag and I really don't have a problem with adults using adult language when the show has a warning on it. BUT I did find it strange that you actually bleeped the one usage of the "F" word yet felt totally comfortable putting out a show where you used "retarded" as an adjective every other word and say "rape" over and over when talking about beating a boss. AND spent half the show talking about poop and porn. To be honest I'm so disappointed that the show is turning to be all about cheap, vulgar attempts at humor and that it really has little to do with WoW. I was hoping that the show might take a different direction.

'Sorry everyone' by FarSpace
Submitted on 2008-12-22 20:55:36 CST
Sorry Leala, I know you were not talking about this but never the less it made me think, thanks.

I noticed that I said my joke sucks fireballs. Sorry about that. I just want to let everyone know that I just wanted to say my joke sucked as in vacuum and something that had to do with WoW to make it fit. So I used fireballs and it had nothing to do with that word on the end of it. After all fireballs are made out of a gas, although a hot gas, they can be sucked, otherwise I would have used lightning bolts but I don't see how lightning bolts can be sucked into a vacuum in any way.

Please forgive me all, and yes I'm serious and not making any joke here. Yes I know my explanation sounds kind of air headed but I am an airhead, trust me.

Oh shoot I just thought of something, I could have had used fire bolts, and yes I'm still serious and not trying to make fun of anything.

Merry Christmas everyone! o/

I enjoyed Episode 3, because you balanced the entertainment with the news. Sadly we are back to the same. I think that Ali is a major weak-point on your show. I think that you should ditch her and fly solo, or find another host. When I hear her speak I imagine the girl in the beginning of "I Like Big Butts" video , by Sir Mix-A-Lot.

Ok, here is when I come to your defense, I wasn't offended and I am pretty sure most were not offended by your comments.

Marc it seems that Leala and Beau have this idea that they are the morale compass on VirginWorlds. They do not receive opinions about their show and content very well, but frequently bag on others with opinions that differ from theirs, with their own self imposed impunity.

So I guess this is to Leala, you take yourself too seriously and get over yourself. You think that language is offensive? I am offended by pompous over-inflated egos, so I should say I am embarressed by listening to you and your husband on Spouse-Aggro.

Farspace, what are you on ecstasy? You never have one negative or critical thing? Oh that is unless one of the senior podcasters start ranting about something. When I read your follow-up to Leala I felt so sad for you. I mean come on, sum it up with one word.

SYCOPHANT

Enough ranting and a Bah Humbug for you.

How dare you BurntSushi! Beau and Leala are really good people and the podcasts that they put out are simply outstanding. Epic Dolls is one of the best examples of a well thought-out, informative and creative podcasts on the internet. She knows what she is talking about.

And by the way, even though I kid FarSpace about his comments on my rants, you gotta admit FarSpace is a good person as well. Trying to keep it positive and I'm sure is well respected by the casters on VW. I wish I could be that positive all the time. It's a characteristic that is welcomed.

You have a right to your opinion but you shouldn't say nasty things about the Turkeys because you just don't have a leg to stand on with those comments.

Sorry Beau, I know you got this under control but I'm pissed

But I'm used to anonymous people growing taller on the internet. It happens.

Funniest thing is, he is making fun of our moral compass concerning this show, while he obviously thinks HIS is the only one that points TRUE North.

Anyway, we thought we'd give some advice to the host, and while MY email was harsher but meant in a "We are drinking beer in a bar talking about this.." Leala's email was nice and even gave some stories for use on the show.

I didn't see anything horrible in saying the word "Embarrassed" and I don't think Marc did either. After all, many of our older 'casts were an embarrassment too.

Anyway, sorry for the derail Marc.

Beau

Well I never said my opinion is the only opinion that matters or that my moral compass is the only one that points north. Maybe I was a little too harsh on Farspace, but my opinion on Beau and Leala will not change, barring a miracle.

And as for Beau, saying that there is nothing wrong with saying the word embarrassed. What she said was out of line and I met with kind.

So I apologize to Farspace, but for the others, bleh. I have had enough of listening to them. I stopped listening to VoV/Spouse Aggro quite a while ago. I checked out the format change to see if it had improved, but it did not. Still Beau rambling inanely, along with acting as if he knows nothing; at least I think that it is an act.

So say what you will.

And by her? Do you mean Leala or Ali? I don't have a problem with Ali, I just don't think that she is right for the show.

I would love to share my opinions on air, but I don't think people really want to hear what I have to say, as you can see I am not well received. I can be very brash in my opinions and make no apologies for the most part.

I think what really has me in an uproar is the lack of quality in the podcasts here lately. There are only a few shows that I really enjoy on the collective.

I love VanHemlock, Limited Edition, SUWT, No Prisoners, No Mercy and The Online Gamers Anthology. It seems the rest are just going through the motions.

I do have to say that I am fairly impressed with A View From The Top. Seems to be a solid podcast and I will tune in as long as it keeps that pace.

But if anyone wants my opinion even though, I think Leala Turkey's opinion on the matter of the possibly offensive words is closer to what I would go for, but then I don't think all shows absolutely have to be perfect or anything. We all say some bad words but I'm sure we don't mean anything bad on purpose.

But I like BurntSushi, some one has to put a counter point up there sometimes right? And I can tell you guys are really just having fun with eachother.

BurntSushi, I'm not offended of anything by your assessment of my previous comment. Ha-ha!!! You should here my friends talk about me, but they love me and that's what counts :)

I could defiantly see & understand Leala's point though. As far as the podcast I did not have a problem with it, but I'm not the only one listening to it and others have their feeling about it too. I guess it's because I look at most words as having many meanings and it depends on how they use it, but if some one is sensitive to some words then that is for sure understandable. Marc wants comments and so he is getting them, so that's good.

I'm not saying it is bad to mostly think positive but it would not be good to have an entire world of FarSpace's either ha-ha-ha :) But theirs is allot of things I don't like, it just so happens to be I can't think of many things at all I don't like about VW and the people who are part of it.

I do like this show though, it makes a good compliment to the other WoW podcasts and to this website, but it may be hard for some of us to understand BurntSushi's reasoning for not liking Ali on the show or whatever but that does not mean he is wrong, it just means he is of the minority.

Ali imo is really awesome to listen too and she is pretty smart which I love. Even though she might be a man and or at least has a boyfriend/girlfriend or married, she is still pretty cute. What can I say? he-he-he

P.S. BurntSushi, is just being honest, that's cool, I'm pretty sure you're not trying to be horrible or anything, you're just saying what you feel.

Oh ho. What a zinger. You called me Scytale. I see what you did there.

As far as coming onto The Craft of War to talk about the content of the podcast, well, that doesn't seem to be the appropriate forum for it (Probably SUWT or Witty Ranter, talking about podcasts with weak formats or something of that nature). That is why I left a comment here and I didn't plan to comment until I saw what Leala posted, which was misrepresenting what the show was about. So, I felt a correction was needed, since no one else had done so. The show was not vulgar and/or low brow and also should not be considered an embarrassing act to refer others to listen, even though "I" don't particularly like the show and its format, I feel that she is very misleading in her post.

Here is the portions of which I took issue in Leala's post (sadly it is a majority of the post):

1. "I didn't realize the show was going to take such a turn for the extreme low brow."

-FALSE. Extreme low brow, I don't think so.

2. " I recommended the show to my listeners based on the last episode and I'm going to be really embarrassed when they listen to this one."

-Really? It was that bad?

3. "I understand that your show has an explicit tag and I really don't have a problem with adults using adult language when the show has a warning on it. BUT I did find it strange that you actually bleeped the one usage of the "F" word yet felt totally comfortable putting out a show where you used "retarded" as an adjective every other word and say "rape" over and over when talking about beating a boss."

- Does anyone else see the flaw in thinking there? I know you have an explicit tag but OMGz, you said retarded and talked about raping a boss!!!! Seriously, I wouldn't of been suprised with an explicit tag.

4. "AND spent half the show talking about poop and porn."
-They most certainly did not talk about poop and porn for half of the show, it was briefly mentioned.

5. "To be honest I'm so disappointed that the show is turning to be all about cheap, vulgar attempts at humor and that it really has little to do with WoW."

-Cheap and vulgar, along with not having anything to do with WoW? Their show does have everything to do with WoW, albeit weak content, but WoW content but none the less and not vulgar.

As far as you, Beau, not making any apologies because of your opinions, yeeeeah. I know you don't make any apologies about your opinions, instead you prefer others to fall in line and apologize to you or suffer your snide remarks. For proof of that I would direct people to various posts here and the forums for Vanguard (You all wouldn't believe some of the things that he said there, if you don't agree with him about the direction of the game).

The posts that you and your wife have been making lately on others podcasts have been quite snide. Unless you forgot No Prisoners, No Mercy; with the WoW debacle. I don't mind others stating their opinions and I don't necessarily always agree with others, but when you act as if your opinions are fact and/or misleading, well that is when I take issue with it.

Well I am sure you will hit me back with a twit or pathetic comment again, so I will eagerly await it.

This is a statement about you, coming from you. Or are YOU able to posts your opinions and state them as fact, without others having issues with it?

Also, you are mistaking me for someone that cares if others think badly of him, for whatever reason.

Now please man, if you are going to show how you have been virtually following us around for so long, at least have the guts to give us a website, a blog or (God forbid) a podcast to judge YOU on.

You are kind of starting to creep me out. You say its OK for people to give their opinions on stuff (which I did here) yet you proceed to rip it to shreds line by line? If you expect anyone to respect your opinions you need to start respecting everyone else's please. It doesn't matter how long and huge and detailed of a post you make, its not going to "prove me wrong" on my own opinion about something. You don't get to tell me what I do and do not find acceptable. And if you don't like me so much please just leave me the hell alone. I don't even know who you are and I can't possibly imagine why you have such a problem with me but its creepy dude. Just stop. Get a grip.

@Shawn

A relative of Frans who is in the PR business herself always says "there is no bad publicity, there is just publicity." As I have mentioned on our s how before, Mae West used to say "say whatever you want about me, just spell the name right."

As far as the heated debate is concerned I am almost (note I said almost) jealous that it isn't our show that has stirred up such controversy. I listened to the first two podcasts myself but the debate only makes me want to hear for myself.

As far as explicit ratings are concerned, I might add that just because the language in a show is explicit doesn't mean its a bad podcast. When the MOG podcast was in full swing (it seems to be fading a bit) one of the two hosts drops the "f-bomb" more often the Europe was hit in world war 2. However was a good podcast by well informed hosts.

On a person note I will add, however, that no matter what the context in which it is used, I personally find the use of "rape" in humor goes beyond offensive.

@ Beau - Let's just say I don't read all of the emails we get on the show ;)

@ Julie - You're exactly right, and I LOVE that Mae West quote!

While not taking sides here, I wanted to offer some advice for Marc and Ali. Entering the VW collective is a great way to get an instant fanbase, but the listeners here are extremely varied in their opinions. This is thanks to the wonderful variety of shows we have here. Many will listen to your new show for the first 3-5 episodes, but not all will like it. The listener base will evolve into people who return for the entertainment and information you provide. Stick with what you do best, and the fans who like what you offer will stick with you. Change to accommodate the most vocal opposition, and you'll lose everyone. That's a fancy way of saying: "You can't please all of the people all the time."

'Let's clear something up...' by Beauturkey
Submitted on 2008-12-29 16:52:15 CST
...this is not a debate.

It started out (concerning us) when my wife said that this episode was embarrassing.

This didn't come from nowhere. I had emailed Marc a few weeks ago, telling him (in a "bar voice" meaning, like man to man talk, using a lil humor and a lil ball busting) how I think his show could do better.

I told him that it is not hard for a girl (Ali) to be the "sexy girl in a room full of nerds." I told him to challenge her and himself to:

A) Upping the ante a bit, and becoming less "low-brow", mainly because it wasn't working too well.

B) Or sticking to his guns, and just being one of those other "MOG like" shows. (The Turkeys have liked MOG for a long time.)

Then he contacts my wife asking for advice. Her show gets a lot of listeners, and although is part of the collective, already had a "following" that was plenty large. Seems as though Marc was asking for friendly advice. (He asked very plainly in his comments and on the show.)

She wrote him a blunt letter, but a friendly one. She gave him advice.

Then, after show #3, which it seems was going in a different direction, he puts out the "dirtiest" show yet.

We had no issues with it being a dirty show. What, do people think me and Leala sit around praying and watching our P's and Q's?

I will let Leala speak for herself, but I had issues with it being UNREAL. In other words, the hosts should do what they want, but just put YOURSELF into it. The show has been having an identity crisis since the beginning.

But, of course, that's fine. I'm enjoying seeing it grow and change either into a good show or a crappy show...we'll see.

Then Scytale comes on here dragging, once again, us into the mix. He said we think we are high and mighty, of course all the while slinging advice himself. Without, of course, admitting that the show WOULD be embarrassing if, after episode 3, you recommend the show to your audience which happens to be made up of all ages, families, and of all levels of player.

Using "rape" as a hip, young term is not OFFENSIVE mainly because it is referring to RAPE. That is a given.

It is offensive because it reminds me of 17 year old X-Box Live users.

Beau

It was certainly a surprise to see the plethora of comments on this episode. Here are my thoughts.

I will always welcome comments and advice. I am surely not a professional, so even though I don't consider every piece of feedback useful, I still read and appreciate it. Negative or positive, all feedback can serve a purpose of helping shows improve.

I don't mind when people formulate their own personal opinions of the show. Many people enjoy my show, and many others don't. The only time sharing an opinion becomes a problem is when you try to make up someone else's mind before they have a chance to listen for themselves.

At the end of the day, I am going to record a show that "I" want to record. Ali is an absolute amazing co-host who I hope sticks around for many episodes to come. We will continue to have fun and hit record. Whether you like our show or not, welcome to The Craft of War!

Hi Ali, I think I said this before but just in case I wanted to let you know that you are smart and insightful too, and I never even play WoW but you seem to paint a pretty good picture that I can see in my brain :) And I'm sure you know that the Sexy thing although probably true is just a funny, right?

Leala and her friends on Epic Dolls are really pretty great and everything, they have been around for a while and I can easily understand WoW with them too. Sometime when I read about WoW some ware else they can then un-confuse me too. ha-ha :)

With all the other great podcasters on VW backing you up too, I think you are going to be in great shape, so that's always cool. :)

But if I knew you were married or did not care for people referring to you being sexy or cute or whatever then you will say so. & would not mention it. I just think it is cute how Marc try's to boost you confidense though too :)

'The Show Has Great Potential' by EddieB
Submitted on 2009-01-09 05:48:23 CST
I listened to Episode 2 and 4, my thoughts:

Both of you have great audio voices and the show has a lot of potential. However Marc brings much more energy to the show than Ali does. Ali sometimes comes across like the girl at the bar that is bored enough to talk to you until someone better come along. (e.g. really short answers to obviously leading questions.)

There are times when she truly seems to be enjoying herself though, like during the lightning round, and you can instantly see the potential of the show in those moments. They are just too few and too far between. It leaves the overall impression that the podcast is really only important to Marc, and Ali reluctantly agrees to play along, but she's not really into it.

Like I said, that is how it comes across as to me, the reality could be, and likely is, completely different.

Thank you both for putting yourself out there and trying (many more never do), I hope my comments are received in the constructive spirit that they are given.

I really like the podcast, and I just dropped by and signed up to encourage you to make another one. I listen to quite a few World of Warcraft podcasts and this one is definitely one I look forward to.

I don't know what the controversy is about the show... Low-brow? Come on... people are too easily offended, loosen up.

This show has more of a laid back tone and maybe that's why I like it. Don't change anything Marc & Ali, the show is great. Look forward to #5.

WoW,
Some of you people are pretty mean. I would point out that they do this for free and out of love for the game. Unless they are broadcasters in RL I don't think you can complain, just find another show if this one isn't to your taste. The intertubes are full of them!

Finally got my computer repaired. Show number 5 was recorded January 2nd, but was lost do to a failing hard drive. I have since repaired the computer and recovered all my data. Show # 5 (recorded January 2nd i believe) will include the winner of the contest along with all the other crazy talk you have come to expect. I hope to get back to a weekly schedule again.

Thank you for your patience

Marc
