Episode 7 Discussion Thread

'dancing to opera' by FarSpace

Thanks for telling us a great pace to look for F2P MMO's. freemmogamer.com seems pretty good.

Anyway, I went to go see what this Archlord MMO looked like, and it is of a particular stlye all right, in this video the Human Mage looks like she is dancing to opera while setting off her spells. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bEbs5cY-hQ

I guess some people like that kind of thing and that's cool but It seems there are way more styles of MMO's out there then I imagined, it seems like they took a consol game and made it into an MMO.

P.S. great show, really funny too :)

'? about TOR and Micro and or does that mean F2P?' by FarSpace

I guess TOR is gong microtransaction? Is that like described also as F2P? I figured you guys/gals were experts on the micro/and or F2P subject and could enlighten me.

Thanks

Excellent work chaps! Archlord was one I'd been somewhat curious about - free and all - and was thinking of giving it a go at some point. Now I don't have to. Your sacrifice shall not have been in vain!

'What makes a F2P MMO?' by Riknas

What makes a F2P has been a subject of debate between the three of us for a while, in the same way that people are questioning what makes a true MMO at this point, (Andras has on several occasions tried to argue the idea that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare could be an MMO what with levels and all.)

The definition we go by right now is "If you are not -forced- to pay for it, it's a F2P MMO". This includes games where there is a micro-transactions system (However, if you have to buy the box and/or pay a subscription, that's just the worst of both worlds really, and -not- F2P).

So, right now we include the three types of games that we covered in Episode 1.
The micro-transactions MMO. (If you want, you can buy little in game items. Ex: Archlord, Exteel, and many Asian MMOs)
The Optional Subscription MMO (If you want, you can spend a monthly fee ((Which is typically smaller than the average 15 dollars a month)) and you basically unlock new content such as higher levels, new areas to reach, etc.)
The Open Source, completely free game, that is made by volunteers, and although we give them the most credit for being totally free, the inconsistent funding also tends to make them the lowest possible quality.

On the "debatable" side, we have the "lone" MMO such as Guild Wars, and though you have to buy a box, there are no micro-transactions or subscriptions to pay. Joe's been really pushing this one, though we've still yet to make a unanimous decision.

In the name of at least saying ONE positive thing about Archlord, I did enjoy its soundtrack (allegedly performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra). I've even kept some of the MP3s from the game.

The rest of Archlord though is the very definition of unpolished in every way.

I'd been thinking for a long while about checking out Archlord. Guess now I don't have to!

Have you checked out Sword of the New World? You used to have to buy the box, but I think it's a free download now as well, with optional micro transactions.

Sword of the New World is on our list of things to do in the near future, though it may be a bit due to technical difficulties (And fits of utter rage). It is completely free, though it's regional distribution is...annoying, to be put simply.

More on that later...
