The Warpath Episode 2: We Don't Like Ike
Thu, 25 Sep 2008 03:23:00 GMT [download/play]

The Warpath returns for Episode 2 to discuss the launch of Warhammer Online.  Stephen and Phillip discuss their thoughts and impressions on this launch versus others that they have been a part of, and share a bit of speculation about the near future of the game.

This week, the guys talk a bit about the Tier 1 scenarios.  Last week we told you to do them for XP and RP, and this week we tell you how.

Also, some of Warhammer's unique features get discussed for the sake of those who hadn't already experienced them in Beta.  If you want to know about Public Quests, Renown Ranks, or Morale Abilities, then take a listen!

Shortly after recording, we got ourselves some forums!  Go check them out and share your thoughts on the show!

As always, you can reach us at with your suggestions, questions, comments, or complaints, and we'll be glad to read them, maybe even on the air!

Hey, just wanted to drop a comment that I think you two are doing a fine job. I like how you discuss aspects of the game that differ from WoW and other MMO's in general. I think it's a lot more constructive and interesting to go over things that make WAR unique and enjoyable than to blanket statement how it's just the same old stuff seen before.

Is anyone else running with a good system having too much lag?

My situation is I can run AoC at default high settings with shadows on at an acceptable frame rate of about 60 fps average. It will dip down to about 25-30 in places like Old Tarantia and top out at like 100 in dungeons.

In WAR how ever I will get about 45 fps average, but I dip down a lot (like 10-12 fps sometimes 2-5), specifically when a lot of players are around or PQs I understand that fps will take a hit with a lot of players surrounding you, but shouldn't I be running at a stable fps with WAR based on the fact AoC has a much higher system requirement.

Is anyone else having issues like this? Also is the most likely culprit server side or client side?

Here is my rig:

E4600 @ 2.4ghz Core2Duo 800FSB
4Gig of DDR2 @667mhz
EVGA 8800GT 512mb
Running in XP 32 bit

I haven't had any serious problems with Warhammer until last night. I had the same experience that Julie was talking about in the NPNM podcast. I tried to do a public quest when there didn't seem to be anyone else around but one other player. How frustrating!!!

I kept going back in to try and finish. I didn't want to leave that other poor soul out there trying to do it alone. Basically, I had to get barrels of beer and give it to the dwarves who had been hurt by the train over-turning. The trick is that there are Greenskin Champions out there guarding the dwarves. Each time I died, I racked up another death penalty until I was holding 5 penalties and 15 minutes of wait time for them to go away. I couldn't find a "penalty eraser dwarf" anywhere. I was swearing up a storm!

I don't know what the answer is for this public quest problem but it's sure to get worse as time goes on.

Also in response to Burnt's lag troubles. I have the same problem and have not found a solution. Turning off some of the graphic options seemed to work at first. However, when I got in any pvp situation with lots of other players - it was a horrible lag-fest. It was un-playable in certain places with very high population. It's not my system though - I know that.

The lag problem is something that they will need to work on immediately because it makes the game - not fun! I kept switching back to Warcraft to see the difference in the lag and Warcraft is virtually lag-free for me even in the most populated areas.

Lag problems are a serious determination for me deciding to stick with a game or not. AOC lasted a couple weeks and WoW is 4 years. It's got to be smooth gameplay particularly if there is PVP.

Hopefully we will see some improvement. In the meantime, I will keep switching the graphics options around thinking that I am making an improvement when of course I am not.

I LOVED The Drone Bay podcast during my time in EVE Online. So very freaking happy that these two great hosts, Phillip and Stephen, will be heading the WAR podcast here. Love both episodes so far and impatiently looking forward to more!!

Hey this is a great podcast. Keep up the good work. The podcast is entertaining and full of lots useful information. The RP server you are playing on sounds like a lot of fun. I may have to roll a character there.

'I got Warhammer and Warhammer 40k confusion :)' by FarSpace

I'm looking for good info/lore/ a good book on background lore about Wahammer the boardgame to understand how Warhammer online came about-not40k

Because I guess there's Warhammer & Warhammer 40K, I got them Confused because When I looked it up on Amazon to find Books about Wahammer to figure out were the MMO was derived from, I got 40K book/items.

I do know about Warhammer the game and all that but just never got to really learn more then just what I saw in a short moment, but I remember it since I was a kid and played an old OC game, but the PC game was Warhammer 40k I guess too.

Maybe I'm still confused, and it has been so for several years now I guess but I'm thinking other people might be too and especialy in the U.S. because we have always heard about it in bits and pieces, unlike in EU were I guess it is more mainstream popular an better known.

Although I must say it is pretty well known buy the people who actualy play the bourd game in the U.S. I guess?

Thanks you guys are awesome :)

I am a little behind but catching up. Keep em coming please. I am a long time WoW person moving to WAR so I really appreciate the comparisons. I also like how you tie things back to the rich Warhammer lore. Very, very cool.
