Those who have listened to our show have frequently heard it
introduced by a woman with a delightful Irish brogue â that voice belongs to
Emma Lloyd. Emma is a dear friend who was born in Ireland and lived in
England during World War 2. While Emma has been a guest on the show
before, this time we asked her to help us celebrate Memorial Day by sharing her
memories of Ireland and England during the great âWar to end all
Wars.â
As Emma shares with us during the interview, we pray that
there will never be another war like WWII. As you will hear throughout the
interview, Emma herself is a bit of living history.
Notes to the interview:
Among the many famous people that Emma met, one of them that
she refers to is Queen Mary. The Queen Mary that she is referring to here is
Mary of Teck, the Queen consort to King George V, Queen Mother of George VI, who
was king of England during World War II.
She also speaks of Margaret and Elizabeth. These are, of
course, Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, and her sister who is now
Queen Elizabeth II of England. Both Margaret and Elizabeth remained in
England during World War II, despite pressure from the British government to
evacuate to Canada.
The âAnthony Edenâ she refers to is Robert Anthony Eden, 1st
Earl of Avon, who was the British Foreign Secretary between 1935 and 1955,
including World War II. Anthony Eden later went on to become Prime
Minister of England between 1955 and 1957.
During the interview she refers to âDoodlebugsâ â this was a
common nick name for the V1 jet propelled bombs that Germany Launched at Britain
during World War II.

I haven't listened to the podcast yet, but I promise I will. However, 'The Great War', and 'The War to End All Wars' refers to the First World War, rather than the Second World War.

Let me say this about that - in general, if I said it, it's a mistake. However, I have learned that what Emma says of history conflicts with a book, invariably Emma has been the one who is right - including the story about the concrete bridges.
However, there is some discussion of World War I (a bit) as you will see.
I am sorry the memorial day special took so long to get on the air.
Mia Culpa...it took a LONG time to edit.

Hey Julie, I wanted you to know I posted a petition and they are not going to help me. If you buy a retail box, this requires a NEW account to activate the free items. Not a real big deal but no other game on the planet works this way. so my first couple months cost more than normal (21 bucks versus 15) since all I get is 60 days.
it is not clear on the retail box that this is the case and really not a good way to start the game...
It is all over the eve forums too... However, I do like the game and will play just thought you may want to know of this odd issue.

I miss the "normal shows" with the short shorts, mad as hell, and flame proof undies. :( I think this is the 4th(maybe 5th) interview type show you have done in a row. Its been at least a month since the last normal show.

@ Pufnstuf: I wish I had another solution for you but unfortunately I don't - except to say thanks for warning all the listeners.
@ McDonagh: Well you are in luck. The next show is not an interview show. No flame proof undies - we must be doing something wrong, we haven't been flamed in a long, long time. However, the next show is just not an interview - its more of an extended "short shorts" chat with Fran, myself and a guest host as well. The show will be uploaded over the weekend.

Being a veteran myself we wanted to do something special for memorial day. It has the twofold benefit of recording the stories for her relatives overseas - I am sorry it took so long to edit.
The usual format will return this week.

I really enjoyed this Memorial day show. As a teenager, I interviewed my grandfather about WWII and his service in the Pacific Theater. Not only did I learn so many things I never would have known about the war, I also developed a special bond with my grandfather, as well as a huge amount of respect for what people that not only served in the war, but the people that stayed behind to keep our countries going and our children safe.
Thank you for giving me the chance to remember that interview and to hear the story from someone over on the European side. I can't say enough thanks to my favorite nun podcasters and Emma!

You are quite welcome - and as Emma is 95, although she is in very good health, we wanted to make sure her stories about all the famous people she knew were recorded for her living relatives (all overseas in England and Ireland). Just recording the stories I learned things about world war 2 that I never Knew.
Our concern (Fran and I) was that the show would not be well received as it is not about games, but rather is about someone who is always part of our show, even if it is the trademark audio clip at the end of the show.

I can't wait to get this show started tonight. I was playing a bit of catch-up with my PodCasts this past week and I'm finally back on track. Saved the best for last!
I really look forward to learning something from Emma.

I really enjoyed listening to this episode. Having someone that has so much history to talk about and from such a amazing perspective. I really appreciate you guys making this episode. I loved hearing it and gave me a great insight to a time I wasn't around that my grandfather lived through.

People often underestimate all that older generations around them have to offer. In fact Emma is so much fun that around the holidays, if you don't put your "Emma Reserveration" in early you won't be able to invite her for dinner - she will already have plans.
We wanted people to get to know the delightful soul behind the voice that is on many of our podcasts.
