No Prisoners, No Mercy
Host: Julie Whitefeather & Frances Kosac
There comes a time, friends, when your favorite MMO ceases to sparkle, when even new videogames lose their luster, and the computer room becomes a prison; and all that is left are two gamers (who happen to be nuns) with a very large axe to grind. Come join Julie Whitefeather and Frances Kosac as they go to War - and along the way discuss the events of the week in the MMO industry.

Happy New Year. The first 32 minutes of our show was recorded under a rain barrel inside the ladies room at the Jackson avenue subway station...

... so we tried a new location for the first 32 minutes and it didn't quite work out but it isn't all that bad as you will hear. Here are the subjects for today:

1. Mad as Hell: "It's still too short"
2. Short Shorts
3. Nerd-in-chief
4. I can see the future
5. E.D.D. - It's lonely at the top
6. Flame Proof Undies

Removal of DRM is not a green light to go buy Spore. The 'game' is still a joke I would only recommend to parents with young children. Don't waste your money!

Just to clarify, you realise the population cap is for FORTRESS sieges (the fortress that preceeds city sieges), not Keep sieges which are found on every map. I am not level 40 (yet) but I realise I will not be able to contribute to the Fortress battles as I do not even have my lesser ward set yet and would likely be one shotted by the NPC defenders rather than the player defenders.

As every fortress siege I have seen to date has brought every tourist logged on the server from Tier 1 and up a method to limit those who "can" contribute to the siege is beneficial. To quote from the Warhammer Herald article on this topic (http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=564):

"When the Fortress population reaches certain population thresholds, players who are attempting to enter the area of the besieged Fortress that are Rank 35 and below will be teleported to the warcamp for the region they are in. When the next area population threshold has been met, players that are Rank 37 and below will be teleported to the warcamp. The final population threshold applies to players that are Rank 39 and below. Once the total population cap has been met for the area surrounding the Fortress, all players that attempt to enter the area will be teleported back to the region's warcamp."

This has not limited the siege to level 40s only and you should be able to get to level 35 at least from the PvE in your own racial pairing.

@tog89: yes indeed, as you say, "Just to clarify, you realise the population cap is for FORTRESS sieges (the fortress that preceeds city sieges), not Keep sieges which are found on every map" If the terms ended up being used interchangably by myself all I can say is "Mia Culpa" I have a tendency to do that.

My concern with Keep Warfare is one that I share with Ms. Antonaya who, along with JMO, will be a guest on our next show. She has experienced closed Warbands, higher level players that get bent out of shape if you don't meet their expectations in RvR and...

...Tier 4 is like a brick wall trying to level through - magic Fortress teleportation or no. In fact not only did pve not get me up to level 35 in my own racial pairing I went to all of them and go up to level 33.

'Ack! FW = Faction Warfare.' by Letrange

And yep I'm a little too used to EVE's acronyms. Faction warfare is kind of EVE's version of Open RvR as opposed to other forms of PvP. This is the mechanism by which individuals wishing to learn PvP without either a) turning Pirate, b) joining a large 0.0 alliance or c) joining up with a corp/alliance running an anti piracy campaign can join up and get their daily PvP on.

They should just bite the bullet and instance fortress battles. Make it a scenario that unlocks for both sides when the proper zones are locked. How they intend to tally the wins/losses and if that unlocks the city proper is up to them.

Right now T4 is terrible. CC gone rampant when you do actually fight people and PVE the rest of the time. Fortress raids are just making it even worse... but then there are balance issues and some major class problems on top of all that.

In fact I am constantly asking people what the acronyms they are using mean. People will say in guild chat or general "does anyone want to do "df, gh rq, st, or ru?" or something of that nature and I will have no idea what they heck they are talking about. My pvp experience in Eve was all zero security space and corporate warfare.

What I tend to do myself is either a.) interchange terms where not approriate - for example "battleground" becomes a general term that I end up applying to any pvp area instead of clarifying whether it is a keep battle, scenario in Warhammer or battleground in Warcraft.

...or b.) neglect to give a source of information which Fran is very good at correcting me at.

Mad as Hell: To be honest I've given up on WAR for awhile. Not just because of the all the newsworthy problems, but because of other reasons. Although I really enjoyed the PVP aspects of the game (all in all done very well), but I just wasn't impressed with the PVE portion of the game. I really like PVE because most of the time, that's where the lore and stories lie. Not only that, but I run on the minimum spec, and even with all the graphics turned all the way down, it still runs laggy. And as you've mentioned before, a game should run well on the minimum spec (and I agree). Given some time (and maybe a computer upgrade) I'll give it another shot.

The Movies: Yes, it's expensive to go and not really worth the time and expense for most people. Granted seeing a movie on an extra large screen can be fun, but I think most people would rather wait a month or two and OWN the movie at about 1/3 of what it'd cost to go to the movies on a date. Or play a MMO. Even a higher priced XBox game will usually give more entertainment for the buck.

Status Quo: I'm into experimenting with the talent specs in WoW as well. A couple years back when I started with a warlock in WoW, I noticed all the other warlocks seemed to always use the voidwalker pet. So I made the decision not to do that, but instead see how high I could level by only using the Imp as a pet. And I carefully picked my talents accordingly. Wholly crap was I surprised at what a success it was. Here I thought I was challenging and hindering myself, but instead I discovered a whole new and effective way to play apart from what everyone else was doing. Point? Play how you want to.

That's it this time sisters. Thanks again for the entertainment.

@ Seritaph: The problem with LAG with Warhammer is not as bad as it was with Age of Conan - nor has Mythic "under reported" the system requirements needed to run the game smoothly as bad. However Lag is still a problem and the capacity of the servers and ability of the game to run smoothly should have been a bit more carefully considered being that the purpose of the game is RvR battle.

Where staying with the game or leaving it is concerned...

As we have discussed in past shows, Warhammer was once seen as the great hope for the future of mmo gaming - now some of those same people treat Warhammer as the unwanted stepchild.

Well , It probally will get non 40s mad that they get booted from a fortress, But I got my character to 40 so i could enjoy T4 RvR same with mostly all 40s. So level 40s should be entitled to stay in fortrss raids since they worked to get there. To me T4 wasnt that bad. Now its easier.

@ Mystery323x

Well now thats more like it. The interesting thing I found about the level 40s who wanted to rule the scenarios and pv feeling they were somehow entitled to dominate pvp is this:

Before long what happened in the scenarios is you would often have groups of people who would crowd around the starting area with no one willing to go out and fight the 40's. That sort of "entitlement" can only last so long until it begins to pull the game down and pulls the player base down with it. The concept reminds me of a politcal cartoon that I saw in the 1960s. It had a bedraggled soldier standing alone in the middle of a battlefield. The caption read simply - "I think I won."

As for T4 being easier my response would be this: compared to what? Drilling your own teeth?

Happy New Year. Another great show.

I love TB from WOW Radio. I still listen to TB's shows even though I don't play. BluePlz is because Blizzard employee posts on the forums are called "blue" posts, hence BluPlz. He's using it to say, "Yo Blue explain this." or "Blue gimme a break!"

I hope WAR works out the instability issues. Porting people away from the action doesn't exactly sound like the "massive" battles that were billed for the game. Even when I was in T1 a group of us with the aide of only a couple of T3 players, successfully defended Reikenwald, so it's not like lower level players can't contribute. But we were the only ones showing up to defend Altdorf then so every able body was welcomed. I guess if you have more than enough of the T4 players there then they have to do something if they game can't support the volume. *sigh*

'Fortress Fights in War' by Sentack
Submitted on 2009-01-13 16:08:37 CST
Okay, clarification time. I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page, when it comes to the Fortress fight changes in War.

Fortresses are the rather large, oversized keeps that are found at each end of a Tier 4 RvR Lake area. They are located in separate maps and can be considered completely self contained areas. You don't go into this map area for any PvE content. While the whole Zone has all the Chapter 15-22 content, the Fortresses are sort of sectioned off from all this. So for the most part, the Fortress battles don't effect PvE at all.

Next, what this change is supposed to do, is stabilize the whole Fortress conflict. Right now, Fortress fights are so large, that nothing Mythic has done, seems to be able to prevent the overly huge number of players hording in and around a Fortress, causing the servers to melt down and ultimately crash. As a matter of fact, Defenders nearly COUNTED on this happening, to prevent the attack from succeeding, and resetting the whole Zone so that the attackers would have to start all over again, from middle map and push back out to the Fortress.

So, to make Fortress fights more reliable, Mythic decided to 1) Take out low level players from the equation very quickly. They weren't contributing as much, and often used by the defensive side to help crash the server. And 2) Put a cap on the number of players in the zone period, giving the attackers a higher cap then the defenders. ( I hear it's around 100 defenders and 150 attackers ) This makes it almost like a Scenario, but not so formalized.

Now, this is still a stupid hack of a job. We all hate it. But first of all, it doesn't effect people in PvE, and it doesn't effect people in the RvR lakes, if they are avoiding the Fortress. So you can still find an RvR Fight, you just might lose out on helping attack/defend the Fortress.

Everyone clear on this now?

Yes sir, all clear sir, crystal clear sir.

Actually I never said it affected pve and I could care less if it did. Yes, I understand it is a fortress in the Tier 4 RvR lake (and as I said above I tend to use terms interchangably - like "battlegrounds" so if Fran or I called it "keep" at somepoint Mia Culpa).

The point is, however, as you said "its still a stupid hack job" and regardless of whether or not it affects pve or rvr the lower level players are locked out. Tier 4 is hard enough to get through without being kept out what Mark Jacobs has told us is the whole point of the game. As "mystery323x" said above "So level 40s should be entitled to stay in fortrss raids since they worked to get there" smacks of elitism that pulls down the game and the player base. If the point of the game is RvR battle a solution should be found that doesn't lock out the players.

I will make sure this is covered in the next show.

I wish I could edit these things.

What ticks me off more than anything else is the idea of teleporting away players starting at lower level and working up. If it was simply "ok this is an instance/scenario and it has reached it's level cap" and that was it - without consideration of level, it wouldn't be so bad.

I don't have the link at the moment (it is at home and I am not). However the great TB is back to recording shows again and is calling the show "Blue Plz" again. You will find it listed in Itunes as "WoW Radio: Blue Plz". His latest show was out on January 10 of this year and is entitled "you have selected greed for (arcanist belt)". Arcanist belt is a project he has going that is incredibly interesting. If I could get to the EU servers with my program I would apply for it myself.

His wife was not on the last to shows unfortunately. I hope she returns I enjoyed the interaction between the to. However TB is his same opinionated controversial self...as they say "a man after my own heart.".

I wish they would add a level 40 only PvP Dungeon or something. Maybe similar to Daoc like Darkness Falls. But my point with 40s being able to stay in fortresses i still think no matter what they should. There is other things to do to get to 40. Scenario's and Other keeps. I realyl dont know how your getting killed very fast in scenarios. I mainly have like 1 or 2 deaths in a scenario since level 30. I always play with my guild tho , which i get more reliable heals :)

Getting from 30-40 still isnt EASY as they say but it easy easier than it was. Im not one to make many alts but later on i will for now the whole T4 leveling is away from me for a while. ( To bad no "/level 20" like Daoc has)

The whole fortress cap isnt such a great idea, but its a fix for now and hopefully will change. My server there hasnt been any fortress raids since the fix. It would be nice if it had a population cap of say 100 then after that 100 is met NOONE ELSE is ALLOWED in of any level.

One more thing i would like is a Frointers type of zone like Daoc. I hate having to zone to all the different keeps.

I play on Phoenix throne, Order. I think i heard you guys did but dont remeber.

If the fortress raids were set so that once a predetermined number of players was reached and no one of any level was allowed in afterwards I would have far less problems with it than the way it is now. In fact it would be great if it was set so that as each person died in a fortress raid they could not re-enter the zone - finally a death penalty th at would make the game a real challenge that Brent would be proud of.

I hit refresh and it posted again sorry about that.

The death penality thing would be something i would like, It would add a nice deal of challenge and sense of danger when out there. But how most players are these days, they want everything in EASY MODE. The Region/ RvR chat would be full of kids/ Immature adults complaining about the difficulty. Then the forum posts "Im quiting unless changes of "Whatever" "
So it would be a nice change for some tho bad for most of the player base :/

'Something I heard about fortress lag...' by Unn
Submitted on 2009-01-16 20:54:16 CST
Mythic's decision to close off fortress access to lower level characters made sense after I heard about a defense tactic I was unaware of (can't remember the podcast where I heard about this, but I think it was ChaosCast). Apparently, on some servers there are large guilds that, when put in the position of having to defend a fortress, would somehow get ALL their players to show up (even T1s), with the intention of crashing the server in order to stop the other faction from taking it. I asked a couple of people I know who played DAOC, and they confirmed that this was a known defense "tactic" in that game too. So hopefully, by "under level 35" they mean to mostly take out those lag-inducers.

I'm not sure I'd want to be in a Fortress before that level anyway. As Fran and Julie have pointed out, the transition from T3 to T4 is quite shocking in terms of survivability (especially for my poor Sorcerer), and I've decided to PVE my way up a couple of levels before hitting any RvR again. Does anyone know what makes the T3 to T4 change so much more difficult than T1 to T2 or T2 to T3? Are we bolstered less? I don't remember feeling so helpless in the other transitions. In fact, I'd usually jump tiers 1 or 2 levels before I'd maxed out the previous one.
