No Prisoners, No Mercy
Host: Julie Whitefeather & Frances Kosac
There comes a time, friends, when your favorite MMO ceases to sparkle, when even new videogames lose their luster, and the computer room becomes a prison; and all that is left are two gamers (who happen to be nuns) with a very large axe to grind. Come join Julie Whitefeather and Frances Kosac as they go to War - and along the way discuss the events of the week in the MMO industry.

Ok all you technical types - what does 80kbps mean?

Umm... 80 thousand bits per second I guess? So that's like 10 thousand bites and that is like 1/10 of a Megabite I guess :) Is that it? Was this an inside joke? :) Should I have listened to the podcast 1st? I swear I will, but I just could not resist trying to answer your question :D Ok going to listen to your show now, sorry won't happen again. hehe, or did I do good?

A friendly reminder to those out there that are interested::
No Prisoners, No Mercy Guild Formation
Saturday, October 25th
Phoenix Throne Server
Be there or be square. =p
I really do hope to see a bunch of people turn up. I'm looking forward to seeing this guild get started and get going!
Other than that, great show again as always!
80kbps = 80 Kilobytes (kilobits? I always get the two confused) Per Second. Farscapes post breaks that down into the details.
'kbps and optimization in PVP' by Shalkis
Submitted on 2008-10-25 05:26:25 CST
I'm going to use my psychic skills and guess that 80kbps came up when talking about a podcast or streaming radio. 80kbps is shorthand for 80 kilobytes per second, and in this case is probably used to measure audio signal quality and bandwidth requirements for transmitting that signal. Barely recognizable human voice is 4kbps, telephone is 8kbps and near-cd-quality mp3 is 192 kbps. If we're talking about a talk show such as yours where the content is mostly speech with some short music clips, 80kbps is more than enough. ITunes says that you're currently using 128kbps, so if you're having bandwidth issues, switching to 80kbps wouldn't hurt much.
Right, with the nerd stuff out of the way, off to the real topic:
Enforcing of optimized specs, gear and class balance in PvP.
Personally, I don't think that PvE and PvP are that different in this regard, but you're correct that WAR PvP doesn't require strict optimization now. That's probably because the enemy doesn't optimize either, so you can win without optimization. And even if you lose, you still get experience and renown. But what happens when that is no longer true? At max rank, experience is meaningless and the benefits from extra renown eventually become negligible. What then?
There is also one additional factor: numbers. The most competitive PvP in WoW is not in World PvP or even Alterac Valley. It's in Arenas. When the number of players goes down, the impact of a single player goes up. That's where you'll see the most stringent gear requirements, the most detailed analysis of specs and class balances and tactical planning that reminds me of speed chess.
That phenomenon is also one of the reasons which made Karazhan the proverbial brick wall. If you have five DPSers in a raid, having one of them die cuts your DPS by 20% or more. That makes some encounters much harder and some impossible. The margin of error is too small for a starter dungeon, especially if you're wearing progress-appropriate gear.
Of course, the phenomenon works the other way as well. In World PvP / Open RvR, you can still win against an optimized enemy if you bring more people. The downside is that it's very hard to balance it all. What if the enemy brings three times as much people than you? Or ten times? If your name isn't Leonidas, the resulting battle will be quite short and unenjoyable for both sides. That's why I hope that realm imbalance is on Mythic's list of "things we have to solve". I'd hate to see Open RvR die in WAR like it died in WoW.

The KBPS question came about as the result of working on the next podcast (Number 12). As soon as one is done we start working on another. In order do save the MASSIVE amount of space needed to store and transmit the shows Brent asked me to change the KBPS at which the show was transmitted. My response was "huh?" Brent, in the kind and informative way he has, solved the issue.
As to guild formation, I hope you are right JMO but I can't help feeling another Holloween party coming on (and anyone who listened to the last two shows knows that isn't a good thing)
And Shalkis,...great post....we will have to make sure that it goes in to the next show. Care to submit an MP3 file of it so I don't have to read it and you can instead? I think it is a great topper to the issue.

That's pretty good Shakis, I love tests my self but am pretty bad at them, I'm going to just listen from now on and learn something. But it is Bytes then huh, I wonder what I'm getting confused, hmmm, this will give me something to study up on again, I think I'm forgetting things in my old age.
About PvP, since I do not know much about it I will just say it s amazing how interesting it can get, with numbers and all, one thing is now that I'm getting into it in CoX it is finaly getting to be something I can do.
awseome fun show as always :)
And good luck with your guild all, I'm sure you guys know how to have fun. as it should be.
'kilobits and MP3s' by Shalkis
Submitted on 2008-10-26 01:11:51 CST
Actually, both kilobits and kilobytes are often (and incorrectly) abbreviated as kb, causing lots of confusion. And to add to the confusion, sometimes kilo is the standard 1000, and sometimes it's 1024. Hard drive manufacturers have used this confusion to their benefit for quite some time now. Have you ever wondered why a hard drive is always smaller than expected when you format it?-)
And yes, in this case it is kiloBITS per second, you caught me there.
About the mp3 version of my post.. let's just say that you'd be better off without it, I'm not that good at public speaking.

Hey there Yawnslaught. The guild formation went very well and Sister Julie was pleasantly surprised. Get in touch with Sister, Franchesca, Greeblee, Ceadrick, or Maclore for an invite. I'm sorry if I missed any names, but I'm at work and that's all I could remember off the top of my head.

I left a comment on Itunes but wanted to leave one here also. You have a terrific podcast and I eagerly await each one. Yours is always the first podcast I listen to.
And guess what....don't throw anything....I don't play Warhammer and have no desire to play the game. It just doesn't appeal to me at all....sorry...I know you love it...
I do game.. I play LOTRO and love it. Have played Guild Wars for a couple of years now.
Keep the podcasts coming...they are great..

Any of the members can invite. Sorry we missed you Yawnslaught but we will be there when you are ready. And thanks for the info Lostinspace now I know what the hat was...Kangol.
But I am really excited about getting my first hate mail this week (ok hate "review") on itunes. We will have to make sure to talk about it in this week's show. Here it is:
"This podcast offers very little in the way of Warhammer content. It has become nothing more than the ramblings of an insecure fanboy trying desperately to convince himself (or herself) that Warhammer is better than Warcraft. Stop talking about Blizzard..."
Now I am a bit confused about this and I will need to ask Fran about it. First does the directive to stop talking about Blizzard mean just the negative things or do I have to stop talking about the positive things as well? And if that is the case do I need to ask Brent to have the "He's the man" article about Rob Pardo taken off the website. Also I am not sure how to take the comment "...trying to desperately to convince himself (or herself)..." Does this mean that the writer isn't sure or he things I am not sure? I have always been sure (should I check if I am a fanboy or fangirl?)
This may even need a bit of research. In the mean time if I am getting hate mail I must be doing something right. Also if I don't talk about Blizzard what if the listeners do? Does this mean I can't let them talk about it either?
I am so confused.

I wouldn't worry to much about the iTunes negative comment. You girls are great fun to listen to. Won't be everyone's cup of tea but you're certainly the kind I like. You discuss MMOs and some include others that aren't WAR, nothing wrong with that. So you ladies don't like WoW as much as WAR and that fella does... big surprise ;)
Anyway, keep up the great entertainment!

The nice thing about the Itune review system is it doesnt matter if the reviews are good or bad they all count towards you getting closer to the first 5 pages of mmo podcasts. Let them whine we dont care your our girls.

Thanks for the words of encouragement Celestian and Ceadrick. It is, indeed, good to kn ow that it helps get out podcast on the first five pages (something I have been looking forward to). When someone tells me not to talk about something the following quote comes to mind:
"Consider it a quarantined planet and a forbidden subject."
I will therefore make sure I speek about it again. In fact I did indeed get a very nice listener email about the subject this week. After a lifetime of standing up for rights and freedoms ain't gonna keep quiet now.

Did you get the 80kbps confusion resolved?
I can help you with this and I am sure any other member of the collective can as we have all had to make our podcasts in this format.
Drop me a line if you need help, it's a very simple process.

We did indeed get it straightened out thanks to brent. What you can tell me how to do is how to record a skype conversation.

If you use a PC you need a skype plug in called 'Pamela'
Or for MAC you need 'call recorder'

HotRecorder is a good one too and one of the most comon used among PodCasters from what I've been reading. It basically is a stand alone program that you open along with Skype and it will record calls and export the audio as a WAV or MP3.
Of course, if the person you're talking to is tech savvy, you could ask them to record their end of the call in Audacity and send you the audio track when you're done. Just some thoughts as I count down the minutes until work is over for the day. =p

Well let me try and get hold of a copy of Hot Recorder. You give us a call this Saturday and if it works you, as promised, will be our first live guest.
Show 12 is being edited today by Fran (we finished recording late last night after I got her to take enough time out of her schedule for the show).
What do you want to talk about on show 13? What does everyone want to hear JMO talk about/discuss on show 13?

Thanks for the compliment Mezzum -its that sort of thing that keeps us fitting the show into our schedules each week. Normally the show would be out by now but unfortunately it is only half edited at the moment. It will be out soon...promise.

Now, I'm going to have to be honest with you, Sister Julie. I didn't expect much from this podcast. After hearing the premise of the show (two nuns talking about Warhammer), I found myself intrigued, though didn't expect much substance. I actually expected a superficial outlook on the game mixed in with some preaching.
Little did I know that this podcast was just the opposite. Not only are you two interesting to listen to, but you guys really know your stuff! Though you do make a couple of mistakes, most of them are fairly excusable, and is easily outweighed by your interesting insights and anecdotes.
Color me impressed. There's just something...special about hearing two nuns talks (intelligently!) about Warhammer.
Please keep this podcast up. This is just further proof that a nun can kick ass and take names in MMO's with the rest of us.
