Van Hemlock Episode 58Wed, 1 Jul 2009 16:28:00 GMT [download/play]
This week we're back with some more news (which contains bad language, so be warned) followed by an introduction to our new feature which is stolen straight from Van Hemlock's blog. So not really stolen then.
The twitter question was "Impressed with Beneath a Steel Sky at gog.com. What old and busted gaming classics would you want to see revived and playable?" and resulted in a less than productive weekend playing on a spectrum emulator. Follow @vanhemlock on twitter to be part of the next one.
'looking forward to cheap seats' by SteveGriffing Submitted on 2009-07-02 15:10:52 CST I actually played rappelz quite some time back, over six months or more, but i don't really remember. I found it fun in small doses
'Bad Language, yay!' by Akely Submitted on 2009-07-02 16:05:50 CST Always knew you had it in you, Jon. ;-) (And I do agree. Pricks!)
As for the zero of you who wondered: Temple of Apshai was a game for the C.64. Basically you took your little guy into dungeons, killed monsters and got loot. The game was extremely rudimentary graphics wise. And as I tweeted: room descriptions where printed in a folder that came with the game. The feeling of adventure was really there.
Nice to hear some mentioning old Infocom games. I really liked Some of their games... hmm "Planetfall" (?) and... some murder mystery game.
It will be fun to hear about Project Operation Cheap Seats, a.k.a. POCS.
'Hello There!' by blaktalon Submitted on 2009-07-03 17:48:05 CST Another great show guys, keep it up :)
Whenever you do your intro Hemlock, "Hello There!" it reminds me so much of a Geico commercial where the Gecko is oblivious to the camera, then turns aroud and says that. Completely random, but it makes me laugh every time, you sound just like it.
and yay bad language!
'Temple of Apshai memories' by Zulika Submitted on 2009-07-04 20:02:13 CST I was surprised to hear that title come up.
I played it to death on a VIC 20 as I did not have the funds for the super duper Commodore64. I think I was still in elementary school when it came out.
I also coded games for days from the magazine you guys referred to -mostly in good ole Basic, *shakefist* damn you syntax error! & *horray!* for checksum, but sometimes in Machine Lang -all around yuck!
Waiting 45 mins for a cassette tape to load and hoping it did not goof up before it loaded (did you remember to use a pencil eraser on the cassette head/) and programming you own games. You kiddies ain't hardcore!!!
We were all hardcore back in those days.
Love the show guys.
'The Best Game Eve.....r Fragile Allegiance' by Everan Submitted on 2009-07-06 15:37:03 CST Fragile Allegiance
Is the best game ever. Moon based mining and Space fleet Battle, and then lots and lots of missiles...Was i the only person who played this?
I wish i could get it to work!
'Fragile Allegiance' by Bremen Submitted on 2009-07-07 05:00:14 CST I also played it (and loved it). Found it in a bargain bin for $1.50. It took a huge amount of effort to run it even back when it was current, and now it's nearly impossible.
Which is a pity, because it was indeed awesome. I prefer to think of it as the ultimate hybrid of Sim City and Total Annihilation.
'MW' by Paganini Submitted on 2009-07-08 10:05:14 CST Not really sure why the Mechwarrior series died out. MW2 is probably my favorite game of all time (great music too)
