Van Hemlock Episode 31
Mon, 15 Dec 2008 23:58:00 GMT [download/play]

This week we've tweaked the format slightly to avoid the problem of important news happening when we don't have a news show, so here's a show with some news and a nice long talk about the big news of the week: Micropayments, RMT, making games free to play and also publishers double dipping on the charges. We discuss the games we've played that have real cash-for-stuff, which ones work and which don't and then manage to cram a discussion about Playstation Home into the conversation.

You can pay a Micro Transaction of 2.99 for a tin foil hat that will stop all alien invasion problems.

The name change feature in wow also changes the name on ignore and friend lists. So you'll still know who the sex changed jerk on your server is.

The statue feature in war was mentioned a few times when it was being developed. I actually figured it was already in the game from the way they were talking about it but I'm not surprised that it isn't in yet.

Sony did ok with the Online trading card games and in SWG too, I played it and it was done pretty good, fun game. I got a Sith speeder too, but some ware along the line I think it is tradable, so no tradable items is better for in game economy imo.

But for the most part, I vote for CoX as one of the best examples on how to do RMT's in the right way. Because they are of great quality with lots of items in one good size theme pack priced at $10

When I saw someone wearing the Robot gear I was like that's cool, I might get that too, and it is not just for one character at a time either I think.

About WoW I think it is over priced, in EQII I just paid 1 gold at the tailor to redo my appearance, although I could not change my name, but it was just one gold.

Sony needs to give you way more then one suit of armor for $10 or whatever. And $6 for a potion lasting a few hrs or so? They made a mistake by using hrs, they should do it +50% until you get to the next level or something.

Even TR gave XP boosters for free at vendors, they weren't worth it but they were still items you could buy with in game fake money.

And in CoH when your character logs out any ware they get extra bar of +50% xp for every hr up to an entire level, so when you log out for a while you can then catch up to your buddies & on my main I still have plenty left and I'm just saying it sounds like Sony is either missing the boat or they are targeting another group of people other then U.S./Canada and Europe because we demand much more for our money then what Sony is doing.

Bottom line is they need to get advice from CoX devs imo. Or how about ask us players 1st like I the CoX devs did. Did Sony even ask what the players wanted for $10? And CoX has delivered on their promise to put out more content when players but the $10 theme packs.

You mentioned, near the start of the show, the huge station dupe drama in EVE, and then later on talked about RMT in EVE via Game Time cards, but I don't think that I heard you connect the fact - through discussion on the show - that the dupers were able to pay for their online time from the profits they made by cheating.

Essentially they were stealing real world money from CCP.

Which I thought was an interesting development in the progress of RMT and MMOs.

'Feck!' by gothwalk

'Feck' is, naturally, an Irish word. It's not really connected with similar Anglo-Saxon words at all, being derived instead from the imperative of the Gaelic verb for 'to look', 'feic'. As exclamations go, it's one your Irish granny would use happily.

At least, that's how we explain it over here...

Excellent observation, yes, which we failed to connect.

It's almost certain that the folks using the starbase exploit to print free pretend-money will have spent a fair portion of it ensuring they never needed to actually pay subscription ever again, via the game time cards. The whole thing gets more and more sinister as it unravels!

"Essentially they were stealing real world money from CCP."

Well, not quite. A real person with a credit card always has to pay real money to a third party company to acquire a GTC code. There's no direct "Game time for ISK" function on a player's account management page, only a "Give player character ISK and apply the GTC they purchased to my account."

Note to self: listen to show. ;)

'magic T2 building POS Pixies... lol :P' by FarSpace
Submitted on 2008-12-19 22:34:04 CST
How about this theory?

The pos T2 exploiters made other players work at least 2 times as hard as they had to, in order to make their isk.

So the exploiters stole isk from the players doing it with out exploiting. Or something like that?

I'm upset about it because building my own T2 gear was never worth it, I never knew why until I heard that some players were using an exploit for the past 4 yrs. Wonderful.

I think the T2 gear/ships should take half the minerals/parts, because that is close to what it should have been in the 1st place,

Either that or put into the EVE lore that that the magic T2 building POS Pixies no longer exists. Put in some fluff reason and that's that. Lol.

btw I'm checking out the free 5 day EVE pass, the new stuff seems to be working ok. I would love Achievments but I guess I could just make them up my self :) Not going to reup just yet though

They need to make T2 production easyer to even things out, maybe add something new to correct that screw up.

Ah, interesting!

So who does lose out? My next thought was that it must be the players who pay for ISK by purchasing game time cards and selling them, but they still get their ISK.

I'm also assuming that the exchange rate wouldn't have been affected.

Is it perhaps, then, that in a tougher economy (i.e. without the flood of T2 goods) the ISK that they paid for might have bought them more in game than it currently does? Therefore the 'stealing' is a lot less obvious, hidden beneath layers of free market economics.

A fascinating topic, regardless.
