 *EXPLICIT*

Me and Leala review the new documentary called "Second Skin," which basically talks about crazy weird nerds and their obsession for games.

By review I mean that Leala talks over Beau and crushes him with her points. Beau eats chocolate the entire time. Enjoy, and let us know what you think of the movie!

Rock on Leala! You should get ranty more often.

Disclaimer: I haven't seen the movie - will check it out later today.

Beau - Opinion pieces should be labeled as such and same with documentaries.

It's introductory essay writing. You say what you will say (intro), then say it (support) , then say what you just say (conclusion). I know that's not often the defacto approach with "controversial" movie making these days, but I bet Leala would be a lot less ranty about it, if they used that methodology.

Noticed Garriott had endorsed this film. Not really good for whatever left of his 'cred'. =(

Leala, you really did explain how I felt after I watched the movie- confused. Not really that I didn't understand what was going on, but more so I was confused about how I felt. Being depicted in a negative way, especially when it’s not truthful, isn’t fun.

It's really funny how people don't realize that there's nothing wrong with gaming. Why don't they do a documentary on people who are obsessed with sports? Some of those people run around naked with paint on their bodies, guzzling beer! lol. Somehow, that can't be healthy...

I think that people forget that the friends you make online are friends just the same. Just because you don't see them and they aren't tangible at that moment doesn't mean that it isn't real. The relationships you have online are just as real as those you have in real life. Frankly, I feel that most of my online friends have been there for me more than most of my real life friends.

It would be interesting to get some of the people in that video on a podcast to ask them questions about their life styles, etc. The movie could only focus on so much of their lives. I'm sure there's much more to those people then just their gaming habits. :)

RagingLeala, best Leala. ;)

Some good points there, but i think Beau hit the nerve: Most gamers are normal people with normal jobs, normal social life and normal health. You don't make documentaries about normal people. That's not interesting.

"Second Skin" in itself is biased as hell. They tell you that half of "all gamers" are addicted and all they show you are the addicted ones. They tell you about gold farmers and chinese sweatshops and all they show you is an exceptionally healty workplace with happy workers and costumers. They tell you how serious gaming addiction is and that you should get help and all they show you is a crazy old lady with a jesus fetish, who (if i understoond it correctly) couldn't help anyone at all.
It's a bad documentary, because it has no depth. They are scratching the surface and showing a symptom (excessive gaming) of deeper problems.

I mean, come on... That guy that was addicted, tried the crazy-old-lady-rehab, failed and turned his unhealty love for the game in an unhealty hatred of the game. He went from depressed nerd to manic-aggressive jerk. He has some deep mental problems and no one seems to take it serious. The last stage they showed him in, i was really afraid he could kill someone.
Dont get me started on the suicide of crazy-old-ladies son...

Leala is damn right. For fuck sake, get some Psychiatrists in there. You don't have a clue what you are talking about.

I thought Leela and the other comments were spot on. These were the worst examples of MMO players that they could find, not counting the crazy old lady, WTH did they drag her up from ? Most of the gamers I know are couples, have good paying jobs/careers, and play as well. Those folks who have addictions or off-themselves aren't because of the game, they would have done that anyway with some other hobby/obsession/substance. Same with cheating spouses, the game is irrelevant, they would have done that with a co-worker or someone they picked up at a bar, church, rotary club, etc.

And Agilfing, that dude at the end who hated the game is pretty scary. He looks like one day he will just snap and go on a murder spree at any minute.

The one stable, attractive couple they showed what, maybe 3-4 minutes of total footage in the whole thing ?

They need to tackle something like golf. What about the folks who spend all weekend at the golf course, miss a shot and freak out, throw their club or break it across a tree. Surely those folks need the crazy lady therapy as well.

Leala,
You are totally awesome. I was so happy to see you so passionate about this topic. You are usually very calm and cool in your demeanor and this was great to hear.

I wanted to point out there really are no such thing as an unbiased documentary ... everything is essentially propaganda of one form or another (like that guy who did Bowling for Columbine...). Everyone has an agenda and I do admit I do SOMETIMES play too much, drink too much, swear too much, eat too much, DIET too much, but I think that all humans are always balancing 'too much of a good thing.' It is in our nature. Not a bad thing but I think we always fluctuate between excess and being bereft.

Personally i think watchtheguild.com is a much more accurate (and funny view) of mmo players.

Keep up the great shows and PLEASE do another DOUBLE DATE!

First thing we got to statr doing is NOT TO USE THE WORD REAL LIFE FRIENDS. You say my online friends, so say my offline frinds, If you really do think of your online frinds as real friends, Then you are hurting them by calling your offline friends as real life friends.

That is a good place to start turning the way people see us, Take the power of REAL LIFE from them, and slap them down to being just offline.
