Episode 8 Discussion Thread

'Listener Counts' by QforQ
Submitted on 2007-07-01 18:19:05 CST
I would try not to pay too much attention to the listener counts of the show. I think the game itself is having problems right now and that is reflected across all the sites/podcasts/blogs that support the game.

It is really hard to get the word out about your podcast/website. I know this all too well with my radio stations. Only a fraction of the people that play these games go to websites and listen to content for their game. It is definitely a tough nut to crack and it's something that I'm hoping to learn more about as time goes on.

I think your podcasts are very good and I hope to be able to speak as intelligent and confidently as you do some day on my podcast/interviews :)

Thanks for linking to the interview, I appreciate it. I hope you enjoyed the interview for it's content. We're going to try to get more interviews with David and the other developers at SOE with Vanguard.

If you would like to talk to me about getting in contact with SOE/Vanguard please don't hesitate to contact me at DJQforQ on skype or email me through uberguilds radio's site. I'm glad that someone is picking up the Vanguard podcast slack and I'd like to help you out in whatever way I can :)

'Good Show' by varka
Submitted on 2007-07-03 00:41:48 CST
Hi Troy,

Enoyed the show once again. Player numbers are definitely down. Every night, after logging on lately, I've been checking how many people are online. Unfortunately I haven't seen more then 250 people in the last two weeks... very sad.

Also, I wonder if your listener numbers are accounting for how long the item has been available? Maybe look at how many people download them within one or two weeks of them going live. No need to change though :)

I have to say my overall feeling from the Dave Gilbertson interview was one of disappointment. I would have expected someone in his position to have been better prepared. There was a disappointing amount of audible paper shuffling and reading from notes.

It leaves me somewhat disenchanted about paying for _another_ six months of access before seeing a game that's in the state it should have launched at.

Yes, editing... code is in there, but I haven't activated it because I'm lame.

I agree Varka - but I thought QforQ did a really good job with the interview.
I was also disappointed with some of the answers from Mr Gilbertson.
Its seems everything is on hold until they resolve the performance of the game client (which should have been done in Closed Beta 4/5)
If they have this resolved by the turn of the year - that would mean that the game has really been in a form of beta for almost 1 year - but players have paid for the game and subsriptions all that time.
I personally think all the players that pruchsed the game at launch and are still subscribed should be given a large reduction is subscriptions next year.

'Thanks' by QforQ

Thanks for the compliment Dathmar.

About Dave being unprepared..I dont expect a director to know every single thing about what is going on, the progress, and how things work. I also get the impression that he is a pretty busy guy so he might not have had that much time to look over his notes.

I think if the game has a semi successful re-launch it would be good for SOE to show some sort of thanks to the players that stuck through it and offer something to the players that unsubscribed. I think a free 15 days or something like that for past subscribers would be good, and for subscribers that are already there I'm not sure. Perhaps, like you said, a decreased rate.

People are dropping off is not your show. You do a fine job. I guess you have been told this before its the game you are playing

The fact is Vanguard failed miserably, and people do not care about it anymore. It is being used now in most circles to represent how NOT to launch, program and develop an MMO. I think the fact that you put so much effort into it and continue to play it speaks volumes about your personal fortitude, but most people abandoned the sinking ship a while back

I myself have cancelled, I saw maybe ONE or TWO people every 2 hours if that on the RP server. The merges may help, but it wont help the crappy performance, lousy player animations, and overall boring gameplay.

I wouldnt be too down on yourself, but honestly I could see your talents put to use in a better game that has more to offer, like Eve or EQ2 or something. Vanguard...no one really cares anymore.

Good luck and great show no matter what game it may be focused on

Sorry if I gave the impression QforQ didn't do a good job, because he did. In fact I shared his disappointed when I heard the "if at all" comment regarding the development of the Advanced Encounter System.

I think SOE needs to decide and announce soon if they are going to acknowledge player loyalty through this troubled period. For me it comes down to:

* I have enojyed playing the game, and I continue to enjoy it, but the lack of _real_ end-game content is disheartening.
* Losing friends who drop out of the game further diminishes ones enjoyment.
* Playing on a server with routinely less then 250 people honestly makes me ponder whether to bother logging on after work each night.
* I can see that their priorities are in the right place, but they won't effect the above points for at least six months.
* An announcement regarding player rewards (more tangible then the founder title) will give people a light at the end of that tunnel. Maybe a paid life membership like LOTRO? Discount for people who have subscribed since launch.

I didn't get that impression from you at all -I just wanted to mention QforQ's interview skills.

Back to VoV - I do agree the "cute" segments in the SOE podcast do annoy me a little - but I just skip them most of the time.
However I quite like the rest of the podcast as is light hearted and Bernlo is a bit of a character !

Troy:

I wanted to say I appreciate your show and look forward to it each week. I thought episode 8 was the best so far. You had the right balance of news and rants. I too am switching between VG and EQ2, but I find myself drawn more to VG.

I wanted to pass on a hint for your listeners. The area called Dead Eye Drop north of the Northern Boarder in Thestra is filled with nothing but limestone and Pyrite nodes. It is a great place if you are trying to level your mining and quarrying from 300 to 400. One word of caution is you need to be about a level 30 adventurer to hang out there. If anyone knows a good place for Mithril and quartz please pass on the location. Please don’t say the road above South Watch.

I also wanted to pass on a suggestion to make the game better. I would like to see them link all the rift stone systems together. I don’t understand why they would have three different systems. I would also like to see them lower the cost for the rentable Griffons to 10 silver. These two changes would let you get most places without having to do some huge boring ride.

Keep up the good work.
Delph (34 DK)

Delph, you found my T4 grinding spot :)

I'm guessing you mean Mithril and Granite, being the T5 resources, and I would recommend the 3 chunks making up Tehatanami Harbor. They are surrounded by rock walls with nodes all along.

Actually I just thought I'd drop a comment on here after playing since the last patch, and just how disappointed I am with the bugs it introduced. I loved the bard content, but half of my new stuff doesn't work. My racial skills no longer function, my RAM usage has _increased_ and my character no longer heals out of combat if I don't play a healing song.

I'm sure I'll find more....

I enjoyed your latest show as usual. My view on the listener numbers is that it is a problem with the game and not the podcast. I only played the VG trial for 1 day and uninstalled it because the game is imo an unsalvagable trainwreck and the only reason it's going to stay running is because there are people who will still pay to play it, god knows why.

That said I do enjoy listening to the show possibly because there is no other podcaster out there quite like Troy. I would actually like to see Troy appear on the SOE podcast and be asked what his favourite coffee is, it could make for some hilarious listening :D
