Spouse Aggro #79
Wed, 10 Jun 2009 21:06:00 GMT [download/play]

SO, this week we visit resident old-person hangout Cracker Barrel for authentic 1872 cooking. Well, 1972 at least. Our waitress was named Cheetara, but she didn't have a one-piece on or a baton weapon. I had the hots for Cheetara when I was a kid, but never beyond my feelings for Jessica Rabbit.

The setting was perfect to ask the question: "Am I too old for this?" So, are we? Why do we play these games set in fantasy worlds beyond imagination? Why do we play for several hours during the week, some of us playing more than we work? Why do some of us avoid "real life" activities like going out to dinner so that we can order pizza and log in?

Isn't this something that only children are supposed to do? Or are we adults just children ACTING like adults? Do we have such adult thoughts all the time that we never think the same thoughts we did as a kid?

Our songs this week are perfect for the show: "Young Americans" by David Bowie, "American Girl" by Tom Petty and, for some weird reason, "Working for the Weekend" by Loverboy.

Please, parents, take no offense when I say that children have, essentially, taken all the fun out of the house. If that's the case, someone needs to tell my friends like Shuttler and Cindy that they are not having fun. Because those two are having a BLAST. So STOP IT. You HAVE CHILDREN.

I'm kidding. Next week we are going to record the "Darkfall Preview" show. At the time of this recording I had not tried it, but have since.

 Enjoy, and contact us:

Episode 79 Discussion Thread

'Pop' by Klojamir
Submitted on 2009-06-11 15:44:00 CST
I totally love the show, Keep it up. I'm in my mid 30s and have a son that is 15yr old son. We play online game together all the time, many evening (mornings) we play until we hear the birds chirping outside. I think having him around gives me the extra incentive to stay young, Yeah I have to be the dad, but I really think he helps keep me in that I Am Still Young state of mind. I learn a lot of the kids lingo, what there into, what's cool, what's not. Oh before this is taken wrong, I didn't take anything offensive, I'm just giving you my point of view. I think having my son around helps me hang on to that youthful feeling. Oh yeah the word Pop, I still use it a lot. People look at me funny sometimes, but I came from Northern Pennsylvania, and that generally is the term used for Soda. Enough of my rambling, Keep up the good work, I look forward to the next episode. You should send a few episodes to Ira Glass and get him to do a show on Gamers. I am sure you have enough material to get him started.

..for ripping on his voice like I do! lol

Thanks for the comments...I meant them in jest but through my work and social life I have met those parents that just seem to regret having their kids. One lady at my work kept talking about how much they cost her, she talked like she was miserable!

Poor kids.

Oh well, keep up the good fatherin'! We need more good kids out there.

I don't think you can use that small interrupted convo we tried to have in Aion either ^^ I LOVE Aion though after having earned my wings and seen the main city for the race we were playing the Elyos I just want to play some more :P

Hey Klojamir I totally agree with you. I think there was good point brought up in the show on people behave so seriously sometimes but it's not just in gaming unfortunately. And I've met non-gamers who are eternally youthful in whatever they do and no matter the age. I think a positive attitude and being able to step back and look at your life from the outside can really do wonders to calm yourself down take a few breaths and realize, there's no need to be so serious all the fricking time. :P

I feel like a big teenager too all the time, I always say I've stopped maturing at 19. It's not really true I've changed a bit from then but essentially I'm still exactly the same. And I agree with Leala most adults are too adult for me. lol
Which is why though I'm a parent I so enjoy my time with my daughter and I just love watching her grow and know that even when our relationship changes, we'll always be close and I want to make sure she's always comfortable and happy to come home. I know that personally I can't say that about my own parents.

People that treat or talk about their children like burdens piss me off. Those are the people that should not reproduce and often those intelligent to make the choice to not have children because they know themselves would make the best parents given the circumstance... lol ^^ Just saying!

I love gaming, I always will!

We come from the gaming generation! (the cool generation)

Further generations will just get more and more into gaming as its a leading entertainment/leisure industry.

I love gaming with my kids, whether it's as simple as them creating a character or playing free realms. Messing about in Sims or My sims, with the wii or using a game on my iphone we share a lot of gaming in our house.

I hope we always can game together!

Even my non gamer wife thrashes it out in singstar and guitar hero and loves watching me and my daughter play a game. My kids sit at the table and craft whilst I paint Warhammer figures :D

Goood times!

My daughter has totally lost interest in that game and she was pestering me for months about it. :/ Now I'm like let's go play Free Realms!! And I'm met with: Nah mommy I want to play Nancy Drew. I gotta say those Nancy Drew games are hella creepy sometimes!!

'Free Realms, where is the housing?' by Gnova
Submitted on 2009-06-15 07:26:11 CST
I started playing this game with my son at launch. He seemed to like it but the fact that it didn't have any housing really put him off.
Not sure if it was Webkins that caused this "problem" but he never seems all that interested in any mmo without decent housing. Younger kids seem to want a space that they can decorate and call their own. Maybe because they can't decorate their own irl. /shrug
I can be running around showing him monsters and great looking zones in Lotro and EQ2 but after a few minutes he always asks me to visit my house so that he can see if I have any new crap, I mean precious loot.

The other thing I have seen a lot written about Free Realms is how confusing the game is to people playing it. It seems that a lot modern MMO veterans are so used to being led by the nose from one location to another in a steady boring progression that they have forgetten how to play games with more free choices and movement. The game has little green dots showing you where to go to do a quest but because you might meander through the zone criss crossing it is confusing and unfocused. What?
Maybe someone will come up with one of the WoW type leveling guides that take you from point A, to B, to Z in the most efficient leveling order. After all, we must all grind to level cap asap so we can, oh wait...

...and I thought I remember asking that at Fan Faire, to the dev's that were there. I thought so, but of course any answer would have been "we are looking at it...for the future.." lol

They will add those new lands first I'd bet. Still, housing and selling THINGS to go inside that house would make bankity bank.

A leveling guide might be needed...I always just run around looking for lil circles to click.

I was being sarcastic about the leveling guide lol.
If someone wants a leveling guide to grind to level caps in Free Realms they are playing the wrong game.

Let me know next weekend if you want to get together in the Aion beta. I played it the weekend before last by myself and it was kinda boring. I'd like to see what it's like with other people. You should totally have a Spouse Aggro get-together :)
