"Darkfall Fuddy Duddy!"

The Highlights from show 69!
 * Leala and Beau get all gripey for like, the second time in their life about Darkfall, a new really old game that might finally see the light of day. (Leala shows her fuddy duddy side.)  The game has some VERY interesting gameplay (it looks like) alongside annoying interactions with 17 year olds.
This is a discussion as much about different types of game-play as it is about a game that will probably never be released.
Here is the article from (actually, it is from ANOTHER site, MMORPG just linked it. pppsshhh! Figures) that we are discussing.

Here are the stats for Beau and Leala's first PC. It came with a 15 inch monitor, and still works! :)

complain and complain over a game and neither of you have been in beta. All this podcast is (at the point of them describing how bad having a big world is lol) based on is speculation. You have either of you watched the plethora of uploaded HD youtube videos of the DF beta? Live streaming of beta players in the game? Have you read on the DF forums of how many people are actually quite surprised by how beautiful the graphics actually are? EQ1-like? Please you people are insane. Can't believe you based a whole podcast on one stupid article. It is hard to listen past you two crying over how big the world is.

We weren't claiming to be experts on the game or anything. Just responding to the features of the game as they have been explained. And as far as the graphics go that's all subjective anyway. And I did say I'd only seen a few things so maybe there are good looking places, who knows.

This is terrible. Neither of you did any research of how the game actually works post-NDA. Very shameful reporting on your part. Most of this is ignorant speculation. Oh how does skill base system equal all the same level? OMG most moronic statement of 2009 so far!

'First of all we are not complaining about the game..' by Beauturkey

..we are complaining about the points that the article brought up about the game.

We say, very clearly, that we are discussing what the person talked about. You mean that he didn't post screen-shots and descriptions of game-play?

Secondly (and mostly) , we are complaining about those types of players. Because there are some decent players posting some decent articles/beta videos about the game does not mean that the game will not be over run with dumb young men.

Are you telling me, right now, that the player base will not consist of mostly young males that are essentially enjoying it the same as they would an FPS?

You know as well as I that the BETA impressions mean nothing, which is something you point out when you act as though we cannot have opinions based on the beta impressions that we have seen. If that is the case, then why am I supposed to believe that some fan of the games videos is nothing more than them enjoying something NEW, and not something wonderful?

I will make you a bet, and will tell you on air that you are the King of (you fill in the blank) if that game in 3 months after release is nothing more than an X-Box live FPS environment: gamers playing tag while calling each other names.

I don't know if you heard me say this several times, but I wish it wouldn't turn into that. I think some of the PVE elements are right up my alley of "hardcore" immersive gameplay, which is something I talk about CONSTANTLY.

But it won't be, that is simply my prediction. Let it prove me wrong.

Also, we are not "reporters." We are podcasters.

As far as "skill based not equaling level" know what she meant. A player that is brand new can possibly do as much damage/heal as much/sneak as well as anyone that might be "higher" that does niot have a certain set of skills.

Why do you think that a player can make a brand new character in EVE, grab a newbie ship and go cause some trouble?

Now, tell us how much YOU have played in the BETA. Tell us your thoughts.

Or, are you just the polar opposite of us, seeing the light in the videos and screenshots? Thing is, you can't see a community in a video. The community is the issue here.

Sounds like darkfall IS your kind of game.

there is no way I am ever going to play darkfall though, its such a niche game made for the "hardcore" crowd.

My opinion though is that it is impossible to have a real hardcore game, only sadistic and masochistic gameplay. Darkfall is going to be the premier sadist and masochist game of the year.

Well this is the first time I have listened in a long time. I came back for a listen for the Darkfall info and I have to say I remain in awe at the half assed podcasting that these two chuckle-heads manage to put out.

I agree with Chavez, how can you sit there and podcast about a game that

A.) You haven't beta'd!

B.) Do absolutely no research.

C.) Use someone else's article about their opinions of the game and then based your opinions off of that. (What are you two? The Huffington Post?)

Chavez don't worry about these sycophants here. They do nothing but agree with Beau and Leala, right or wrong. Your comments were dead on Chavez and you won't get anywhere here with the podcasters or their fanatics.

I myself don't think that I will like Darkfall and would be inclined to agree with Beau and Leala about the commmunity aspect based off of what little knowledge I have about the game and how they framed it, but that doen't excuse the shoddy reporting done here.

Well that is all I gotta say.

[This area left blank, for the intent of Beau either calling me a stalker or obsessed with him and/or general insult.]

...I don't know why you bother.

So, are you maintaining that he can have an opinion because he saw articles/films/blogs about the game?

You mean, like I am doing?

Shoddy reporting? I am not reporting anything. Me and my wife are having a conversation about one article (I have read many) that was written well enough for us to talk about.

Keep it up though, man. Maybe one day I will be refused that "Podcasting Hobbyist" award for "Accurate Reporting in a Video Game podcast."

Also, you say you would not like it?

Why? Tell me why.

So wait, you have an opinion on it, right? Based on what you the game MIGHT be like? Name exactly how this is different than what we do.

But wait, you must think you won't like it, and must think that the community is going to turn out like WE have said, but based on what? Are you reading different articles than I am? Are you seeing different screen-shots/movies?

As usual with you, Burnt, you are talking in circles.

I do not need to see the latest death metal band live to know that I can't stand their videos or their, and to make a really good guess as to who might be attending (mostly) their concerts.

@ Beau:

I said that I THINK that I may not like the game, based on what I have seen so far. I also said that I would tend to agree with you and your wife about your thoughts about the possible community the current rules would foster, but using someone else's article as the basis of your content is weak without actually beta testing or playing the game in some form first.

As for the analogy of the Death Metal concert comment, well you haven't even watched the hypothetical video to form your opinion. Instead just read an article in Rolling Stone and said that is your opinion. But then again, I cannot expect much from an Elitist such as yourself.

@ Leala:

I have unsubscribed to your show a long time ago sweetheart. I only hear about your show because I frequent VW. I'm not telling you what to talk about, but merely suggesting you create your own content, instead of using someone elses work for the basis of your show. Also for looks like EQ graphics. You really need to get your eyes checked or borrow Beau's glasses and look again.

'Thinking about something is not forming an opinion?' by Beauturkey
Submitted on 2009-02-22 01:56:44 CST
You ARE reading what you are typing right?

Perhaps you need to borrow my glasses?

So, you are still not explaining why you THINK (not forming an opinion, remember) you would not like the game.

Are you saying that you just said the word "DarkFall" to yourself and then you decided you didn't like it? I have a feeling you formed this "thought" (not opinion) because you did what we have done: read a few articles, watched a few videos, read a few blogs.

"Based on what I have seen so far...." Go ahead, explain how what we talked about was not formed on "What we have seen so far."

C'mon. Explain it.

Here, let me break it down:

Leala: Beau, there's someone outside..I think it's that Burnt guy.

Beau: Oh Dog, ok.

*goes to the door*

Beau: Burnt, you know we asked you not to come around anymore.

Burnt: You are a jerk Beau. I just came to say that I think your opinion is wrong, but that I agree with it.

Beau: You do? So you don't think you would like the game, and think that the community will be filled with kids?

Burnt: Yes. But you are a shoddy reporter.

Beau: But I am not a reporter.

Burnt: Anyway, I was reading your blog and...

Beau: Dude, you should go now...I've called the cops. Also, the article we used for the show was not an opinion piece, but a piece explaining literally how things worked. You did read it right? Here, here's a copy...

Burnt: Listen, I am going to leave these last few minutes of this conversation empty because I know you will just insult me...

Beau: You mean like you did first thing?

Burnt: Yes.

*Beau goes inside, Burnt stands there arms crossed, pretending Beau isn't there*

Look man, I have asked you in plain English more than once to just leave me alone, stop listening. You continue to follow me around. Saying that you don't, while following me around, does not mean that you are not.

You are to the point that you are saying that although you agree with us, you have reached your opinion in a more dignified way.

You realize that you sound crazy right? This isn't me being "insulting"...just look at what you have typed so far. You come onto the thread, after saying that you DON'T listen anymore, and the first thing you do is call us a name.

Then you tell me to just call you a name.

Then you agree with us.

Seriously, I think (based on your constant reference to my "fans" and to my ego and my elitist attitude) that you think I am famous. You have delusions of grandeur FOR me.

What does "I only HEAR about your show because I frequent VW." mean?? Is the text talking to you, telling you to listen? My gut feeling is that you think WAY too much of me. Can you explain it somehow else?

It would make MUCH more sense if you just said "I am just trying to annoy you." That I can get. But much like certain shows, if I got to the point where I was having delusions about what they are saying, I will just stop listening.

Here is a simple, simple question:

Why do you care so much about our opinions?

Now please, just piss off. Seriously. I have asked you a million times. You can't say you have stopped listening WHILE you listen. We are not going to agree on anything *except the stuff that you said you agree with us on), because you are beyond that point and are just making stuff up.

Now, if this were up to me, I would boot you from ever listening to my show. But I can't. You hide in your anonymous form, always yapping. I can't hide from you.

I am not saying this because we disagree. I am saying this because you ARE agreeing with us, while saying you are not (or something) which shows me that you are really freaking strange.

I like your podcast and i also liked hearing about your opinions on the game, even if i dont agree. But seriously, Leala, calm down. I needed three attempts, before i could listen through all your ranting. Leala vs. Darkfall (and Beau) in the Thunderdome. Two enter, one leaves. You should guest star in "Through the Aftermath". ;)

Beau and Leala are 100% fine in what they are talking about & the way they're doing it.

Everyone's voice count's towards success. And really, I bet developers hold Beau in high regard, they make up a huge possible audience for their games.

Many people did not want to play EVE because there was no skill queue of at least 24hr or even less and CCP listened to all sorts of people and are now putting in the skill queue.

The beta testers are not the only ones that will be playing and we need unmarred opinions & or input.

Game developers would want to know about any and all speculation, opinions, comments & criticisms from video's websites and articles people are seeing about the game.

Their input is valuable. If what I get from a game is it stinks then I'm not going to buy it or play it. The developers will want to know what I'm thinking and why.

Maybe the developers need to put out some better articles about their game or whatever if they think it is so good and people aren't getting that from advertisements articles, video's & pictures etc...

'On XBOX Live' by Buddydude

I wanted to stick up for XBOX Live a bit here, or at least point out that it's not as different from WoW as you might think. For the record, I currently play WoW a lot, and I've logged a lot of hours on XBOX Live.

On WoW's community, Leala points out that it's pretty easy to avoid the jerks. I'm guessing she means playing the game with friends and guildies, basically some form of designating other players that you'd like to spend your time with. XBOX Live has a lot of similar systems built in. You have a Friends list. A lot of games let you say "only set me up in games with my friends" and there you go. You'll only play with the people you've designated as good folks.

Now you might say "well what happens when I want to play a game but there aren't enough of my friends around?" Well for me that's not so different from being in a small guild, which happens to be my situation. My usual crew consists of 3 friends of mine, so to fill up a full dungeon squad we have to PUG a fifth. And let me tell you, it's a crap shoot. I've met some people that became good in-game friends of mine, but I've also met some real scum. Ninja-ing loot, quitting dungeon runs, purposely killing the rest of the party, all sorts of top notch deeds. Some times it really gets to the point where I ask my other 3 friends "Jesus, are there any people in this game that aren't complete jerks (we're a vulgar band of fellows, so "complete jerks" is nicer than I really put it)?". WoW is filled with jerks and I do not agree that it's easy to completely avoid them.

One last bit about XBOX Live is their player feedback system. Through a very simple in-game form you can basically + or - another player, and pick a reason for your comment. If you didn't like them, I'm pretty sure the system makes sure that you never cross paths again. And if properly utilized by the community at large, this can be a very powerful tool for placing people with like-minded companions and opponents, something I think WoW could really learn from.

I feel you on a lot of what you said in the podcast, but I felt XBL was treated a little unfairly.

I use X-Box live to refer to mainly those types of players, but yeh it can be a lil bit unfair being that I know plenty of players that aren't that way.

Just a term, really, like "soccer mom."

And yeh, WoW is filled (like a lot of gaming) with jerks, and I point that out in the show. I just think the jerk/non jerk ratio is much worse in PVP games! lol

Thanks for the comments!

I thought this podcast overall was very well done. Although I certainly disagree with some of the points, for example, when I first logged into beta I was genuinely impressed with the graphics, I really don't think most of the screen shots do it justice. The graphics aren't as good as a game like WoW's but it isn't painful to look at. Also, I didn't really understand Leala's vehement disgust toward the 60 second post death period.

But that's what Darkfall is, I think that most of the people that know a great deal about this game recognize that it won't appeal to the vast majority of MMORPG players. I'm looking forward to Darkfall's release a great deal but I'm on the verge of laughter whenever someone mentions it and the term 'wow killer' in the same sentence.

PS. I don't think hours of research should be a prerequisite for giving a gut reaction to a few of the features of an MMO.

First off, I'm excited to see a new Spouse Aggro up! I've missed it.

I haven't listened to it yet, but I already know I'll probably disagree with a lot of the things being said, and I'm okay with that. I appreciate how you (Beau) and Leala have such defined tastes in games, it's part of the charm of the podcast. I generally find ways to relate my personal gaming style to both of you.

As a long time reader and listener of VoV/Spouse Aggro - I know Beau's general disgust for the hardcore sides of MMORPGS. The things that turn them more into a science and competition, and take the fun out of the game immersion and more into some e-peen contest. I can relate to this disgust myself, but at the same time I'm also a fan and active practitioner of these things like min/maxing, theory crafting, raiding, pvp, etc.

Don't be too quick to associate all PVPers into the same crowd. I agree that "hardcore pvp" games tend to attract the WORST of player communities and the biggest cesspool of griefers and 13 y/os imaginable, but there are still good people in these games. Me, for example :)

I love games for all the reasons Beau and Leala do, but I also love me some PVP, theory crafting, and raiding. If you don't like Beau and Leala's opinion - no one is making you listen.

Rock on.

Some of the early posters up there need to chill the hell down. They said rather clearly that neither of them had played the game and were basing their reactions on the FEATURES of the game. Are you saying those features don't exist? Because usually when people suggest someone should do their homework it's because you think they are wrong. So are they wrong on how these features are?

From what I have heard they are not, so you'd have to be suggesting their opinions are wrong, and well you can't actually say that can you, matter of perspective and all. It's more then fine to disagree with opinions and reactions, but do yourself a favor and breathe.

I've been listening to the Turkeys for some time and I generally don't agree with a lot of what they say. I don't like WoW or Vanguard that much either, and it annoys me whenever they mention AoC because I love that game. That's not why I listen mind you, I listen because they are very entertaining and what they have to say is thought provoking, not to mention I love Leala's voice. :)

Anyway I thought this was a great episode, oh poster above me JamesTaylor, Beau was actually defending PvPers from Leala's rant. About Leala's rant, honestly I have to agree first of all I've said this on's forums that Darkfall's supposed innovations are nothing more then a throw back to 1999, and apparently I'm still right. Taunting your opponent as they are helpless and can't move is retarded, if ever I were to play and had not known about this feature I would have blogged on how disgusted I would have been with it. So thank Leala for sparing the blogosphere of another rant blog.

LOL. That's all I got left, laughs. *hugs*

I'm glad you made a show about Darkfall and I like hearing about Beau's vision of things.

But this time I think a good read of the FAQ about Darkfall on there website would have answered a few questions you and Leala had. Maybe it's just me reading between those lines but here's what I GOT from it:

1) The objective of the game is that players establish factions which seem to control actual territory thus being the PvP warfare rewards. As slim as the chances are the must be hoping for some sort of community order. I think there hoping to have a fantasy EVE, which will never happen with the nature of the players that the game will attract.

2) I don't know how itemization will ba made, but in this kind of gear there's a place for some weapons or armour to be better than others in combat. This game will have numbers (health, damage, etc.) thus gear lust can be an incentative.

3) The 60 seconde timer. I find it hard that you didn't see what it's for. Since you should be PvPing with allies they have a signal (Help me cry) to let them know that they must intervene to save you. If they can't well the timer or the finisher move of the enemy will kill you. This I liked alot, it makes for a better battlefield experience. I think you were just blinded by the trash talking period, for which I am myself still perplexed.

4) Surely there will be an Accept or Reject of the rez action when you go down for 60 sec so you may chose to respawn instead as any other game.

I haven't played Darkfall and won't from what I read, I know it ain't for me.

Honestly, that was rather unpleasant to listen to ... and you didnt bother to edit that out?

Other thing Id say is character customization (whether its at the creation of the character, or later through gear) is important. "People could drive around in a square box and get points" and theyd be happy ... yeah right, good luck trying to sell that game. Most MMOers want to inhabit a character, and being as unique from others is vital for this.

Anyway, please, no more belching ... especially if you can edit that out. This is Spouse Aggro right? Or is it JHS Lunchroom Aggro?

Nice show you guys, I enjoyed it. I have to say, I don't think that I have ever heard Leala get that worked up over a topic before. I'm not saying that's bad, just saying I never saw that before. It sounds like you guys are having fun with the show, can't wait for the next one. Two Thumbs Up

Actually I must say I only started listening to you a few weeks ago and thoroughly enjoy the show. You have good cameraderie and I can relate to both your game styles though I tend to be more like Beauturkey (immersive, even permadeath like in DDO), but can relate to the 'concept' of teamwork/raiding.

Anyway, glad you brought up info on the new Darkfall and know it is just a perspective and though cerebrally I am tempted to try it, emotionally I know it will bother me.. I do like like hard games... just pretty (like LOTRO).

Hate to say it, but this was the first Spouse Aggro I had to just stop listening to. I love how you love what you love and that's what you love (yeah I said that) and that's your thing, I find it part of your charm (@ Beau) but I think you both went a little overboard and let the anti-fanboy out on this episode. Maybe let your sourness towards PVP games influence your comments a little too much, I'm not sure. Seemed like you both just needed to vent, and Darkfall was just the innocent victim caught in it.

Darkfall is different. Darkfall isn't for everyone. People who play Darkfall aren't any more "hardcore" than anyone else. It's just a different, more retro/oldschool, and back-to-basics game design - you either love it or hate it. Top it off with an indie developer and 7 years of development and of course some things will look "outdated" or "strange," but they aren't reaching out for the WoW demographic. It's a niche game, and it isn't afraid to admit that.

I dunno, I think the bagging on Darkfall and (most) PvPers was warranted. We "carebears" get nothing but hate constantly, and I think the Turkeys got a lot right (but not all) about this game, without even playing it. At least Funcom is excited now because the title of "Worst launch in history" is no longer on Anarchy Online's shoulders.

Btw, what's the theme song on this episode? I loved it, but I'm not sure if I missed it linked somewhere. Thanks!

Thankfully there is a fast forward button and I only wasted 15 mins while at work listening to this.

This podcast was filled with classic quotes like:

"It's not fun to lose in PVP."

"No PVP is ever going to be as succesful as PVE..."

"Too many kids playing it."

Can you guys sound any more geriatric? Is it even possible to talk about something without sounding like two pretentious niche-playing know-it-alls?

You ever thought that it might be a bit more entertaining to fight something that fights back with a shred of intelligence other than yet another brain-dead NPC mob of which we have all killed by the trillions over the years?

Bah, just rubbish, full stop. I can't even drum up the energy to type anymore. I want the nugget of my soul back, lost from listening to the snippets I did.

The only redeeming aspect of this show was the opening music.

'You must not understand...' by Beauturkey
Submitted on 2009-03-04 22:59:12 CST
...even though I have explained it in a million ways in quite a few places: I know what it is like to PVP. You must think, like some people, that me OR Leala have never PVP'd, at all, (over the last 10 years) or that we are somehow "scared" of it.

PVP is not rocket science, nor is it any more or less challenging than PVE (all depends on the player.) PVP is like raiding: repetitious and certainly not HARDER as time goes by.

You are also speaking as though your opinion, about PVP being a "bit more entertaining" is fact, which obviously it is not (it is opinion.) And do you really think that over the course of a pvp'ers life, that he/she does not do something (like killing players and being killed) "by the trillions"? Or is an NPC the only thing in these games that counts as "something?"

Surely you're not going to try to convince me that PVP is somehow a deeper activity? You do know that already your statements have shown that you are unable to realize when you are doing the exact thing that you are accusing us (and pve'ers) of doing?

But, of course you don't see that. You seem to think that our opinions are somehow wrong (which is impossible) when we say:

a) Too many kids playing it (meaning Darkfall or generally most pvp games.) Are you trying to tell me that the bulk of these players are NOT under 25, white, and male? Under 25 down to 17, to me, is a kid. A youngster.

b) No pvp is ever going to be as successful as pve" Again, you are acting as though this is wrong. You know I am not talking about a specific game compared to a specific game, correct? Do you really think that the bulk of mmo players are participating in PVP over PVE? You know that even PVP games, and their players, all go through PVE content?

c) It's no fun to lose.." And this is wrong, again, how? Please don't say that it IS wrong, or that our OPINIONS are wrong, or that you ENJOY losing. We never said that losing, as part of gaming, is something we can't stand.

The only thing PVP does better than PVE is bring out stupid people. Some good ones as well? Of course, I already said that (on the show several times, which I am sure you missed.) But PVE is not pitting you against other stupid people.

Anyway, you said you lost the energy. I seriously doubt that. I think you are (maybe) just being dramatic?

Now, if you think that (as we have explained) we were doing something more than just having a conversation about an article with screen-shots and that talked about game-play mechanics for a recent release, then you need to get a brain.
We were having a typical conversation that two people have. Burps, mistakes and all. I'm sure all of your conversations are scripted, right?

Now, which blogger did I make fun of to make you come over here to comment? hehe

And, of course, it makes sense to point out 15 minutes of an hour and 20 minute podcast to make your point.

"I didn't like the book..."

"I read the first half of the first chapter.."

Granted, I am not saying we DON'T sound like old people (we say it in the show, which you probably missed) but hey, at least I listened to it. In a way, I guess it's punishment: you not listening to our show and passing judgment which is exactly what we did when we didn't play the game and passed judgment.

Hey Beau,

I am completely on your side about this whole matter. My advice is to let the argument go -- it seems there are some people that just won't listen to logic. I have seen it with my show that there are a few who listen that just don't get the concept of podcasting and who really does them.

First things first before I come across as a "hater" if you will.
1. I like the show, seriously.
2. I like Beau and Leala as people (Hrm, that sounds a bit weird to say out loud)
3. I like Darkfall too.

I just don't get the whole "Darkfall graphics suuuuck you're going to really need to love it because you're not going to like looking at it."

But we're all entitled to our opinions, but the biggest issue seems to be the way it's being stamped upon in the show that, despite being told otherwise, it -feels- like the two of you were saying, "DAMN IT THIS GAME SUCKS AND SO DO THE PEOPLE WHO PLAY IT."

I just thought we'd be more objective about this in, "It has this feature, and will appeal to this type of person." That said, Beau i think you underestimate the population of people who just want a challenge in PVP, because I found a great deal of fascination (and enjoyment) in AoC, which did have some absolutely brutal ways of kill your enemy, which could very well be a player. And it's not so quick as *Head chops off* back to respawn. Everything slows down slightly and there are usually a series of movements leading to the absolute brutalizing of your enemy. More often than not though, I was the one being either stabbed in the chest, and then the neck several times, screaming on fire until I turned into a crisp, but I digress.

This stuff just -doesn't- bother me, if I'm held down for 60 seconds and being griefed? Well man, that sucks, I guess I'll just walk away for a bit.

Anyway, my problem is that we seem to be totally cool throwing an opinion into the ground and spitting on it, as long as its our side.

Burnt just wasn't being cool talking about you being the most god awful journalist since Pulitzer, but we don't need to go around giving each other high fives going "Yea man, you totally showed Dark Fall who's the boss, it's totally awesome trashing a game and it's players!" which is the vibe I'm getting from the spouse aggro "supporters". It's not about whether or not the game is good, but still stating our opinions while respecting other people's interests as well.
