Hey guys, I always like the music you pick play on your show. Could you start listing what you're playing in the show notes so I can go get it (legally)?

I liked the music too, it had a calming effect on me, nice.

The "DOUBLE DATE!" segment about couples playing together and the both of you interviewing other couples/married mmo players is great. A success already. It seems a therapeutic and healthy thing. It's fun to listen to more couples having fun playing together or even just relating to each other with a common thing like playing mmo's. It has not always been such a common thing. It's really inspiring to listen to your guests.

Still working on the homework section about comments/suggestions on combat... :) but my 1st thoughts are your both on the right track & I especially like in general how you talk and relate things to other games, it makes it double interesting.

On Twitter, just got done playing LotRO & listening to Spouse Aggro

'About perma death...' by Beauturkey
Submitted on 2009-01-26 19:26:19 CST
...I don't think that any game has ever done it properly. If they were built up with it in mind, they could add certain mechanics that went far beyond deleting your character.

I believe that death could be as much a part of character development as anything else. But we are not talking about just dying and your character gets deleted.

It would be different if you could pass on the benefits of living, like skills or loot, into an offspring, a younger character, a cousin...it would be part of the game just like in many single player games that allow for death.

And as for people not taking chances when there would be perma death, is it worse that a player has no price to pay (or very little) in most MMO's?

It could be done, and done well.

I deleted my main a while ago after he was killed by a Rhino. It hurt! :)

Great show guys!

'About the combat & survivability' by FarSpace
Submitted on 2009-01-27 04:33:06 CST
I had about 2 pages of thought but I had to TRY and have it make sense so I trimmed it way down.

Making sure things like Magic and Survival were special and not trivial, seems to be the way to go.

Combat made me think mostly of the survivability aspect.

The main thing about survivability it's more fun if you have to be careful and watch your step. But not 3 months of hard earned progression.

Clones every so often along the skill progression would be good.

If you really mess up you can loose progression but just enough to your last clone and the fear of injury and dealing with injury can be pretty tactical. Like dealing with a broken leg or a loss of blood untill you can fix it, I know my hart would be pounding if I was about to fall off a hill and my legg would be broken to a point of now I had to deal with that, but then it is not some that is going to happen every 10 minutes if I'm tactical and paying attention.

Making injury more prevalent, If you die all the way you have to start over at the last clone and you going to be far enough back to not be able to just get back into the same fight like you are invincible and have constant easy do overs.

'Voyages of Vanguard Should Live' by Fellmage
Submitted on 2009-01-27 18:44:19 CST
Beau and Leala,
Although I like and listen to your show, I wanted to express my desire for more Voyages of Vanguard. We need representation for this game, which is coming to a crossroads. Beau, before the mysterious disappearance of Luper, that was your role. Now you've decided to change the name of the show. I don't think you really had the right to do that and I don't think it's cool nor fair to those of us who still make our home in Vanguard.

What I'm trying to say is that I respect your decision to go another direction, but just as the torch was passed to you by Troy, Voyages of Vanguard should be passed on once more. If not to Faeran, I'm certain there is someone out there who still feels passionately about this game and the bright future it could and should have. I'm not sure if Brent reads these posts or not, but if you would, please make sure he hears our plea? I know that I am not the only one who feels this way...

I have covered all those topics many many times before.

Also, despite the title, I am still blogging, posting and podcasting more about VG than anyone out there, period. My video stream gets new players interested every time I do it.

Again, as I have said numerous times, (and i hope that you do not take this as having a mean tone) if you want something to go some way, do it yourself.

That's how Troy did it, that's how I did it.

You can, of course, add a segment to my show. I offered that option to literally dozens of people, but every one got nervous, or said they did not want to be seen as a non-expert. Some got lazy, as well.

Thanks for the comments , though!

Here is the link to my video cast page:

http://www.youtube.com/user/beauturkey

If you notice, the one that I just put up is all about VG, and why I love it. Over the last 2 or 3 days it has been viewed 70 sum-odd times.

The one before that, which is all about VG, has been viewed 445 times.

Granted, those numbers are smaller than the cast, and laughably small in the grand scheme of things, but notice the comment in the second to last vidcast:
"That is hilaroius, I don't play Vanguard, but you may have sparked an interest. thx I love your sence of humor. Keep it up! "

How many people might have watched it and got their interest "sparked" and still do, even as the show is not officially about VG. In this podcast, we are actually talking about subjects that can be pertinent to many MMO's.

Anyway, I actually am in email conversations with someone that might do a "newbie segment" about VG, just like I did a year ago. (?)

If you want a podcast specifically for Vanguard, take up the torch and start recording. I'll listen to your show.

I like the direction the show has gone in, for various reasons. Most of all it seems to fit Beau's playstyle better, in that he seems to have trouble committing to one game, an affliction I share with him. I like to hear his and Leala's thoughts on general MMO attributes, something you can't do in a show devoted to one specific game. True there are other podcasts that cover multiple MMOs but they handle it differently. No intended offense to those shows, but I liken them to watching the news, while Spouse Aggro is more like watching one of those shows with a group of people sitting around and really discussing the in's and out's of their craft.

Spouse Aggro is currently the show I look forward to the most, my favorite podcast I guess you could say. So while I understand Fell's petition to go back to VoV, I think there are better ways that don't involve losing the new format. There's got to be someone who plays Vanguard that wants to talk about it and has a microphone.

Beau, I know it sounds like I want to have your baby, but it's not like that, dawg.

Leala, I forgot to mention that the show has been a lot better since you joined up, as a nice contrast to Killer B, and also as an ambassador for the 800lb gorilla, World of Warcraft (active subscriber here, not hatin'). I'm sorry I didn't give you more credit in my last comment.

Anyway, keep up the good work guys. I love updating my podcasts on a Monday morning and finding a new episode of SA waiting for me.

The funniest thing is that now that I am not having to talk only about one game, so much of the pressure is off, both for recording and playing.

There were "slower news" weeks before, with my Ryzom cast too, and now I can find news anywhere.

But it really took off the pressure about having to talk about stuff I find boring, like grinding, raiding (not raids), bug fixes.

Another strange thing is that more people are contacting me now than before. Dunno' why. Now just to tighten up the show, get more streamlined, better.

Always room to get better.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the high praise. I really appreciate it. =)

And I have to agree. There is no secret society club or something you have to join to make a podcast. You just do it. If someone really feels strongly about having a Vanguard show, we would be in full support of you.
