Episode 54 Discussion Thread

You are all holding back your comments so I will just say it "What the hell happened to Ryan Verniere?" He went from cute little newscaster guy to wacky comedian. I can't say which one I like better - they are both halarious.

Nice job as always on the show Beau - screw 'em if they won't post. I'm still here for you man.

Thanks man, actually I felt that I went a lil hard on some of the groups I talked about..but what is life without regret?

Anyway, the next one is about GU6, and is me and Faeran all having a good time covering patch notes. SOME of them...there were over a thousand bug fixes.

Anyway, anyone seen Luper?

You do realize Beau that Vanguard is supposed to be the hardcore game to appeal to the hardcore crowd ala old EQer's?

Too me you really seem like you are too critical of the hardcore crowd. You seem to stereotype them as people that have a lack of any social skills and live in a basement crowd and that is all the have to hold on to.

People get attached to their achievments and like to be recognized for them and the term hardcore is just a name that they are given because it sounds a lot better than I just play a lot.

I am not a hardcore player anymore, but I used to be; that is until I got married, a house and finally a baby.

This is the niche that Vanguard is trying to fill, not the casual player. There are plenty of casual MMO's out there. This hardcore style was the shining quality of Vanguard.

I just wish that the population would rise so I could group up more easily.

A lot of the topics on the show are pulled from the Official Forums. It's ironic that you are speaking of Vanguard as a hardcore game, which, over at the forums, is the opposite of what a great deal of the players on there think.

I always tell them that the games best point is that it has something for everyone, and can be as challenging and as hard as you want it to be, and you are proof of that. Some players would laugh at the idea that you think it's a "hardcore" game. I won't and didn't in this podcast...just sayin' that many players view the game (although I think that they are just going with what all the "hardcore" kids say) as easy as pie. Again, I say it is as easy or hard as you want it to be...which is brilliant.

As far as being tough on the "hardcore" crowd: I was addressing players that say they are, when in fact (even according to your example of having not as much time anymore) they are mainly players that just played a lot. Time spent in a raid is the same as time spent chatting: both activities can have their challenge, for different reasons for different people, but the biggest challenge with being "hardcore" is time.

Also, if you heard, I give several examples of players that might think they are "hardcore:" The Roleplayer, the Raider, the power-leveller...each one thinks that they are somehow something more than the average gamer, which is fine.

Someone on the forum said that "hardcore" should mean a player that reaches above and beyond any "average" player in WHATEVER part of the game they participate in, and I agree.

I also make the exact point that you bring up: that people use "hardcore" as an identity, just like "republican" or "liberal." We all do it, but my issue comes from when someone playing a video game enormous amounts of time somehow thinks they are better or more deserving than a player that cannot play as much, because of time. In fact, I used someone like you as an example of hardcore: a player that, despite having limited time, still logs in and has a good time. Doesn't matter if you raid or roleplay, real life is the toughest enemy.
