Voyages of Vanguard #38
Sat, 19 Apr 2008 20:40:00 GMT [download/play]

What a talk we had. Too bad a good deal of it wound up on the editing room floor. And by floor I mean trash bin on  my desktop. If I hadn't trimmed it it woulda' went on for 2 hours!

Some highlights from show 38:

* Balance, balance, and more balance. What is Vanguard trying to do with balance? Is this a balanced conversation? What does Beau and Luper think about balancing balance?

* We throw some shoutouts for the Best of the Best! (Can't find the Halgar information, if someone would be so kind as to send that to me.)

* We throw down about some cool forum topics!

A few bits of trivia about this weeks show:
 1) Luper says "doo doo" at one point.
 2) If you listen closely, you can hear a strange mouse clicking sound in the background, as though someone is playing Half Life 2 in the distance.
 3) These two knuckleheads recorded with no show notes. Fun, but hard to do.

Beau

This week's song is "I Wanted to be a Bard" by
Chama C. Fox. This song is brilliant! It reminds me of a combination of anime and saturday morning cartoons. Check out the lyrics and stuff here.

Episode 38 Discussion Thread

The Art book for the most part is a collect of Keith Parkinson art work for VG. Keith did the art for EQ up to , i believe, Planes of Power exp, He left Soe to join as co founder of Sigil. Unfortunately Keith past away Oct '06. Mike Parkinson took over as lead artist then.which he did a fabulous work.

I agree the BotB needed to be held public.I hope it doesn't end with this gm event ,an have more events coming down the road.I've seen some player made event coming up which seem to have GM support. That good to heard that the community is getting involved. This can only make the VG community
stronger.
Great show. :) you both do a great Pod cast. its nice to have a host that plays casual and a co host that plays the end game. cheers

Vanguard is a fine bottle of wine, gets better over time ;)

Hmmm I some how missed Luper saying "doo doo" Allso I din't here the mouse clicking at all. I must be a bad listener.

Balance is a tight rope act that I would never want to deal with. You can never get it right. Some one will all ways say that its bad.

OK so this is what I really wanted to talk about. The SHOW. I am loving the new format with you two. It's like that Ying Yang thang. Male side ,Female side. Casual ,Hard core and it seems that you two can only get better as you move on with the show. BUT ,yes ther is a BUT I am missing some thing from the show. it's what got me wanting to play VG again. Beau where is your sit downs with us. where you talk about all the stuff you had done. how you got some new toy in game. Whats going on with your house. have you done any thing new to it? what level are you now? what new mob have you been killing? I am missing the "Immersion" I know you only have an hour to do the show. and if you run long poeple will start crying or some thing. I just wish you could do some thing with it. make a point five show once a month are put a mini cast about it on your GAX page. I know I am asking a lot of you to do more. I am glad you are doing what you and Luper are doing now and don't want it to stop. I think I just really wanted you to know that there are still some of us out here that liked what you had started a few shows back when it looked like VG was pod fading

any way that it.

Thanks for the comments, and the compliments!

Me and Lupita have just started getting the format down better, but we have basically agreed to each come up with 2 topics, for a total of 4. That way we are covering all aspects of the game. It's funny that you mention my Immersion Project because I was just goin' to update on that on the next show.
I can talk for hours and hours about the simple joys I get from the game, and will more in the future. ME and Lupersia just played on the PvP server and recorded it for the next show and we'll be talking bout that, which will be very fun.
But yeh, I get what you are saying man, trust me! :)

I don't like the concept of a world of uniformity (to take it to the extreme), but I think balance and equality are a necessary evil in a game where everyone pays to play.

'What is Balance??' by Dragonmonk
Submitted on 2008-04-24 20:28:49 CST
Balanced can indeed mean many things to many people the three main areas a game focuses balance on are PvP(enter WoW, Eve, DAoC, GW etc) these games balance gear, skills, classes for how they preform in a PvP enviroment, then you have games that balance for PvE ( L2, FFXI, alot of free games out there) these games balance everythign based on how you do in your enviroment. The third area is PvR or player verses raid, this is where games like EQ and VG fall ( IMO EQ2 should go in with PvE) .

To be honest from the get go VG was supposed to be the next big thing for people who love to raid, so far it has falling short of that but it is making leaps and bounds to get there in just one short year.

With in each of these sections you also have what most people consider to be balancing and that is class vs class. Many people want Class a to be equal in all respects to class B, for that to happen both classes would have to be the same i.e rog vs a rog. If SOE where to take this route everyone would tank, heal, cast, melee the same as everyone else and there would be no diversity in the game.

I choose a Disciple as my main because she is different. Granted i cant fast heal as good as a cleric, but i would like to see a cleric group heal and dps as effectively as i can. My DK does way more DPS then my warrior but i still think the war is a much better tank over all. To me true balance means every classes is needed and utilized equally. not that all classes do the same. Obviously there are some issues where classes aren't performing in the way they should but that is what class over hauls are for. EQ didn't have it right from day one and ten years later are still tweaking there classes to fit in the way they want.

So to answer my question in a simple way: What is Balance?

I say this, every class is a puzzle piece every one is unique but they all fit into the puzzle and occupy the same amount of space :P

Awesome show keep up the great discussions and cant wait tell next week

I will look ya up soon..I play basically 2-3 hours a day, usually from 10 am-5pm, between those hours. We need to go pwn some stuff together.

Your ideas on balance are great. I wish we would have talked more bout it on the show, and will probably go over it again now that I have had time to think about it and see comments on the show. My ideas were based more in generalizations, and I think I put too much thought into it. I think in the original thread they were talking mainly about certain, specific things.

I like your last thought there especially...nice to hear it!
