Voyages of Vanguard #34
Thu, 27 Mar 2008 18:29:00 GMT
Well here it is everyone, the last episode (Troy operated) of the Voyages of Vanguard. Yes, sadly I am moving on to other projects. I have offered the show to Beau Turkey to continue, and I hope he will continue to produce great shows on the game -- he has the talent, energy, and drive to really make the show shine. In this final episode, under my direction, I give my farewell talk, then move on to some letters from Ratook and Pidge, and the show ends with a riotous talk by Beau on all things good and grand in Vanguard.
* Troy's Farewell to the Voyages of Vanguard
* Ratook espouses his philosophy on the universe beyond the world of Telon
* Pidge responds bluntly to his "big words" and high ideals
* Beau Turkey talks about all things good, grand, and gratuitous in Vanguard

'Good luck Troy and Beau' by Fellmage
Submitted on 2008-03-27 16:23:07 CST
I appreciate everything you've done in support of the game and I'm sorry that you will be moving on. I wish you the best of luck on your new project and look foreward to the day of your return to Vanguard (we all know it will happen).
I have been enjoying your clips and appreciate your positive attitude towards the game. There is no other game out there quite like Vanguard and though there some problems remain, I have found myself having more fun with Vanguard than any other. I challenge those who enjoyed the game in the past, but left the game because of the negativity and controversy to give the game another shot. I daresay that there will be negativity and drama involved in any MMO. Break the cycle of negativity and enjoy the game!
Additionally, we at Revelry and Honor bear you no ill will and respect your decision to search for a guild that is more suitable to your playtime and playstyle. Don't be afraid to say hi from time to time (the forum is a great place for this). I hope to hear more from you in future VOV podcasts.

Dude, you know you can come back on anytime. to be honest I am so surprised still that I've managed to work my way onto one of my favorite shows!
This is an exciting time, if you ask me, for myself and working on the show and for us all since we will be hearing something new from you! What is it ? What is it?? Is it all about model railroads? About making things from clay? It better be about games or something. If not, better have more of your voice-overs!
Anyway, seriously, we'll be running across each other more often than not. Remember, there's always a seat for you!
haha I LOVE Pidge! Where's the lifebuoy?

Well, I'm really sorry that you've decided not to continue - I can't talk, of course, as I couldn't cope with Vanguard's issues myself, but I will be back, when I can afford an improved PC.
Where to go now? Well, trust me, Troy, EQ2 is too bland for you and, well really there isn't much worth playing right now imho, so you've probably made the right decision.
Would love to see you back enthusing people on a new Warhammer, Spellborn or Conan podcast, though!
I'll certainly continue to listen to this podcast, as Beau's segments have always been really interesting, so I hope he takes up the mantle...
'I figured' by Otakuman

I kinda knew this was coming. I was thinking to myself last night on my way home from work, I bet Troy is podfading or giving the show to Beau. Thankfully he gave the show to Beau, which is entertaining and informative; unlike Troy.
I wasn't very happy with Troy as the host of VoV. Troy's constant mispronounciations (it is LITERALLY not littlely, ever other word.). He never really would stay on topic and didn't really give out any information. He tended to rely on his guest for information, while not researching anything for himself and when he didn't have anything else to say he would pine on and on about the good ole days in EQ and talk about EQ2 in more and more frequency. The shows because increasingly shorter and further off topic with regards to Troy. To me it seemed like he really wasn't sure of anything that he would talk about and seemed to really just parrot his guests.
Now I know I am going to get everyone in a huff for my comments here, but I feel that these things need to be said.
The straw that really broke the camel's back with me was GDC and Sony Fan Faire. He complained about wanting to be taken seriously as a journalist for the industry, but when it came to put up or shut up he did nothing, zilch, nada and nothing. All he did was show up to these events and had a good time. He didn't interview or ask anyone anything important other than going to other games showings and dinner with the industry being a sychophant. That really was the point that I just had enough of him. It was almost like he expected to be accepted into the industry because of his associations. Brent and most of the others earned their spot and are deserving of the praise they get, because they work for it. Troy on the other hand just seemed to expect it.
I hope that you read this Troy and really think about your next show and improve on these areas.
As for Beau, congrats on the DING! and I look forward to the great you are doing.
'Otaku feedback' by scytale2
Submitted on 2008-03-28 11:29:04 CST
That was great feedback, Otaku and fun to hear someone was after something else in VoV. Other than Brent, Troy is the only podcaster on this site who does the kind of podcasts, which challenge the designer to change their product and make the news, not simply report it and this has always appealed to me.
His creative sidetracks I have found stimulating and thought-provoking, as opposed to the "me too" views of other podcasts, so I wouldn't want Troy to "improve" on these areas, as you suggest.
With regard to GDC, Brenden seems to be the only one of the team who is comfortable with interviewing, but everyone (even Darren:)) is improving over time and I can't really single Troy out, aside from saying that I would like to have heard more of him.
I laughed when you said Troy parroted his guests, since I really don't agree with this. Plenty do, but not, imho, Troy.
So, simply to say, it was refreshing to hear an alternative forthright view on the podcast - shame it took 34 podcasts for you to voice it!
'Farewell Troy' by James
Submitted on 2008-03-28 13:25:50 CST
The correspondence between Ratook and Pidge got me laughing. Good luck to Beau taking the reigns from Troy. Funny thing is, I always feel Troy is at his best when his discussions are not confined to one particular game--so in one way I'm glad he's stepping back from Vanguard/EQ-exclusive projects in the future.
Some of my favorite episodes of VoV are rooted in him talking about his ideas on game theory and design, his broader thoughts on sci-fi and fantasy in general, and his often comical accounts of his travels (his trip to Fanfare in Vegas immediately comes to mind).
If you go back to episode one, you can really hear how Troy has become more comfortable "on-air" and really evolved as a podcaster. I'm very much looking forward to his next project for VirginWorlds.
'Otakuman - Really ??' by Dathmar
Submitted on 2008-03-28 13:42:04 CST
Wow Otakuman - Was that feedback ? ....that was very harsh.
I must say I have listened to all of Troy's podcasts and find a lot of what you said way off mark.
I think Troy never suggested to be the expert or do lots of research on Vanguard but what he does do provide the platform for "experts" (or people that like to research) to speak / guest on his podcast.
As to interviews...we don't know what happened at GDC - Troy may have been willing - but were SOE and other developers willing to have interviews ?
We just don't know...
To me Troy is an excellent podcast host who is blessed with a great imagination and I just enjoy his podcast regardless - they are always very entertaining.
Personally I would love to be able to do podcasts that are a 10th as good as Troy's but comments like this make me want to steer well clear of ever doing one.
Troy - Thanks for all the hard word over the last 10 months.
Beau - Good Luck my friend.
'Passing the Torch' by Talyn
Submitted on 2008-03-28 15:05:37 CST
Congrats Beau, I'm glad VoV isn't podfading. As I mentioned in the final comment on show 33, I'm taking a break myself. Not that I'm not enjoying the game, just the one game-breaking issue for me - playing a tank - is the targeting issues with the game. I'm at the point in the game where I'm mostly grouping, and the game is hindering my ability to tank. Sure, I could park my DK and level up my ranger instead and just not worry about it, but that's not the point.
I'm also having too much darn fun with my kinship in LOTRO (best.guild.evar) so... for now, VG will be taking a back seat but I'll still keep subscribed to VoV just because it's been such a good show, and Beau is always an entertaining host.
'As For my near term adventures' by Shalimar616

For my near term adventures I have selected Lord of the Rings Online . I am on the Arkenstone server and have several toons doing well in the game. Look up Elladaan, Baladorin, Bethedrial, and Phlik if you are ever in country.
I have great hopes for Age of Conan, and will definitely pursue a podcast for the game when i debuts.
As for Otakuman, everyone has their opinion. I would like to offer him the chance to develop, create, and produce his own podcast since he seems to be more than an expert on how to do so.
And to "pine on" about the good 'ol days, I had this friend who always belittled my game designs (the pen and paper variety) tearing my ideas down and proclaiming his was a hundred times better -- after a while I ask him to show me his great game. He quickly took out his napkin with notes scrawled over it and began his tirade!!

There wasn't any Vanguard presence at SFGDC, and although I met with Alan Crosby there wasn't much he had to say about the future of the game. I was really hoping to meet Julie Burness, but alas Sony Online had a very low profile there.
I must admit I was a bit overwhelmed by the show and perhaps could have dug up some interviews but I was just having such a terrific time that I often forgot to set up the recording equipment.

hmmm.....how to start ,I hate that its over and that Troy is off to a new game. sounds like he will be playing games that I don't so I most likely will not be downloading his new podcast. I hate it ,but understand. you can't keep playing a game your not into. when you put a podcast on top of that it makes for a very bad host. Troy you are the man and I hate to see you go ,but allso think that you are doing the right thing because you can tell that your not into the game at all. Troy you will be missed...well untill you come back from the dark side and pick up a SOE game again.
Beau Turkey ,I was going to say congrats to you but think thats it should be congrats to us the fans of VoV. becouse we are getting a new host that is fired-up about the game. ummm... Welcome the new host of VoV

Troy - I've been listening to you since the beginning and its been a great ride! I can remember countless times we stayed late at work and one of us was like "Let's listen to Troy!" :) You saw us all through Vanguards good times and bad times, and there are so many of us that continued to have a total interest in Vanguard thanks to your show and enthusiasm. Thanks for all the great VoV episodes, and looking forward to seeing you in Middle Earth!
Beau Turkey - Great to have you taking the reigns! Looking forward to another great year of VoV goodness! You have a passion for the game that really shows and I'm really excited to what you do. :)

If Conan is any good i'll probably offer some contributions to your new show. I really liked your style on VoV and listened infrequently even though I have only played Vanguard for a few hours.

I can understand providing constructive critisism to a podcaster. The problem is that there is nothing constructive in your critisism. You've chosen to make your displeasure with Troy's style public and make it personal attack. Making such a post on Troy's last podcast goes a long way to show just how much class you have.
All things considered, I would like to hear you in a podcast with a more open format, not restricted to any particular game. That would give you the freedom to play whatever you feel like at the moment and should you get tired of what you're currently playing, it really won't effect your podcasting.
