Voyages of Vanguard #23Wed, 17 Oct 2007 12:29:00 GMT [download/play]
This week Troy and Karen are back to talking about Vanguard with a
series of shout-outs, the status of VoV friends network, and Vanguard
news. They then sink into the basement and ramble on about the music
they listen to while playing the game. Troy has pitiful taste in music
that will cause most gamers reel and waver in shock, while Karen is a
bit better one must wonder how sane she is listening to children
sing-along songs. Karen talks about some cool dungeons, and finally
the two end by talking about their blogs.

'Corrections to the Show' by Shalimar616 Submitted on 2007-10-17 15:31:06 CST Howdy,
I noticed this morning that one of my late night edits didn't take. So, at the tail end of the show there are several lip smacks and some extra stuff I had not intended to include. I am generally a stickler for ahhs, ummmms, and lip smacks, and apologize for that; also there was some meandering and digressions that should not have made it into the final cut.
Also, I misspoke at one point in my meanderings about being 70th level; when in fact we all know that there is but 50 levels in Vanguard.
Early on that pestering Eric (from EQual Perspectives) tried to muscle in on my conversation with Karen, and you can hear his darn chimes from Skype. It was so interwoven into the conversation that I could not edit it out.
Thanks for the feedback so far guys.
'Cheer to Talyn' by Shalimar616 Submitted on 2007-10-17 15:32:51 CST Hey!
Awesome to see you in the guild. I hope I got my story straight there; about being a pilot and such. I often listen or read stuff then somehow it gets scrambled in my re-telling.
Hope to see you ingame soon!!
'Flyboy' by Talyn Submitted on 2007-10-17 21:30:58 CST Yep, you had that correct! Thanks for the welcome, I'm looking forward to getting back home to get some more time in Telon.
'Gnome Liberation' by James Submitted on 2007-10-18 01:11:53 CST This show was my favorite yet. The rapport between you two is just great. Your mutual distaste for gnomes had me falling out of my chair at work. I personally tend to play gnomes but I sympathize with your aversion to them. If I end up creating a character on the Xeth server, I will be sure to bite your ankles if I run across Pidge or Jaye. I'm one of those freaks who doesn't listen to music or watch television while I'm gaming, but when I do have the sound off, here's my top 5:
1) If I Should Fall From Grace With God - The Pogues
2) Ancient Forest - Clannad
3) Falling Off the Edge of the World - Black Sabbath
4) Grimly Fiendish - The Damned
5) Ace of Spades - Motorhead
Most of these serve best as soundtracks for clobbering and hacking, IMHO. The Damned and Clannad are a bit more atmospheric (Clannad did the soundtrack for the amazing "Robin of Sherwood" British television series from the mid-eighties which every fantasy fan should go out and immediately rent or purchase).
I will be lulled to sleep tonight with the haunting image of the mischievous goblin Pidge decimating mobs with Boy George singing in the background.
'Music' by Talyn Submitted on 2007-10-18 10:08:25 CST I've tried twice now, with limited success, listening to a podcast (episode 22 of VoV in the most recent case) while playing and it's difficult for me. I have a difficult enough time paying attention to anyone speaking (the mind tends to wander, far and often, in my case) and as much as I pick on the Immersion People (Immersionites?), playing modern rock music in a fantasy game completely destroys any sense of immersion I may have had and is very distracting to me. WoW was the exception -- I spent so much time there and honestly, the music was pretty limited to begin with, so I'd often have RadioRivendell.com streaming rather than the WoW music. I haven't spent enough time in either VG or LOTRO yet to tire of their music.
'Gnomes' by Talyn Submitted on 2007-10-18 10:13:40 CST Towards the end of my WoW career I did finally roll a gnome warlock (ooooh, originality! yeah yeah) and it was pretty interesting seeing the world from a lower camera angle. We did have a few hardcore gnomes in the guild who were great people and we always looked forward to seeing them. One was a geared-up rogue with neon pink pigtails, and the gal who played her was awesome to talk to. And honestly, all prejudices aside from us Tall Folk, it's just damn hilarious to see a gnome protection warrior tanking some huge demonic boss. Talk about a David and Goliath moment! =D
'Sweet Podcast' by headwound2323 Submitted on 2007-10-18 18:53:16 CST Keep up the great work guys and gals. I've been thinking about trying out Vanguard for a while now. And after listening to 4 or 5 of your podcasts I'm about ready to take the plunge. I was wondering which jobs are best for a tank (meatshied). I was wanting to roll a Paladin and was wondering how they are at tanking in the game. And any other good jobs you think are good at tanking would be much appreciated. Thanks. And If you need a topic to discuss, how about why a current WOW player would like Vanguard. Especially someone like me looking for a different MMO experience.
'Tanking' by Talyn Submitted on 2007-10-18 21:34:44 CST Keep in mind, I'm a grand total of 3 weeks into VG myself, but there are 3 defensive fighters in the game: Warriors, Paladins, and Dread Knights. Warriors have good dps and are the best at holding group aggro. I haven't grouped with (or even seen) a Paladin yet, but from what I'm told they make better tanks than the new improved Pallytanks of WoW. The Dread Knight (I'm playing one of those) is a bit of an anti-Paladin -- defensive (or offensive) fighter who also uses dark magic for damage, debuffs, DoTs and in two more levels I'll get a lifetap heal ability that I can suck away my opponent's health and heal myself with it. (At least that's my understanding of it) The more experienced DK players have told me we do our best tanking with a 2-hander rather than 1H+Shield like the warrior needs. We hold awesome aggro against single mobs, and I've done two before, but once you start getting big groups, the warrior will shine with his AoE taunting.
They're all fun, they're all very different. Maybe give each a shot and see which appeals to your personal playstyle?
