Episode 13 Discussion Thread

'Fan Faire was great!' by QforQ
Submitted on 2007-08-08 02:58:50 CST
It was awesome to meet you Troy along with Brent.

We stayed in the Rio and it wasn't the greatest. The hotel itself is nice enough in the rooms but it kind of sucked being off the strip so much.

Listening to the podcast now..but the smoking thing hit me too. I'm not too used to smoking and they have laws against smoking here in public. Luckily I handled it well but I wasn't too fond of all the smoking.

They wouldnt let me in the Voodoo Lounge unfortunately but I still had fun that night. We just walked around the strip that night.

You're right, Brent doesn't look like anything in the picture. The RL Brent is skinny as a stick :P

All in all it was a great time and make sure you keep a tab on our website for when we put up the audio and video of our Vanguard interviews, including the one you were on! :)

Also, the guy that we talked to about classes, especially the Cleric is Darrin McPherson. His name is Talisker and he's the class lead.

'Smedley's presentation' by QforQ

Actually Smedley didnt talk about every game. He didnt talk about Planetside, The Matrix Online and Vanguard. From what I understand, the speech/presentation was just for games that have new stuff coming out soon.

John Smedley - from what I have heard on this site - is quite shrewd at dealing with PR, so it is quite early for him to be playing up Vanguard. There may have been some decent advances recently, but it is still very buggy and eats RAM. Nothing very significant has yet to happen for Vanguard since the take-over, so I would suppose that he is waiting on the performance of the dynamic programming team, that you spoke about. Even the server merge and Update #2 has yet to happen, so all must reserve judgement.

Regarding the lack of tables for Vanguard, there really is no excuse for this, but I guess whoever was organising it got their brief before Vanguard was acquired?

Ok, everyone says that the picture of me that was on the ABOUT page doesn't look like me. In fact, everyone says that. So in order to shut everyone up: I've put up a picture from this past weekend. I stole it from the EQ2 Daily forums.

Matrix Online didnt have tables either.

That picture makes you look like my brother. It scares me.

Your Skype picture makes me think of Jason Mewes every time I see it.

The old "about" picture was very "All American Boy."

And none of them quite correlate with the person I met at GDC.

That's life in a visual medium I guess.

'Thanks for the Clarifications Q' by Shalimar616
Submitted on 2007-08-08 16:27:36 CST
Thanks for the bits of clarifications Q, my head must still be spinning from all that decadence in Vegas.

Is Planetside and Matrix online a game? Oh then perhaps Vanguard wasn't the only game not mentioned at the Keynote. Seriously, Planetside and Matrix are both tired old turds if I can use that expression (pay Brent a quarter royalty) but Vanguard is a new and up and coming title -- it should have been hyped just as much as Pirates of the Burning Sea or Gods & Heroes.

Planetside may be a turd, but at least it's a polished turd. Ok, well, definitely more polished than Vanguard.

You would think they could at least play a teaser trailer or something for all of their products. I mean, it was the Fan Faire for SOE products, not just the ones with a change coming up in the near future or new games.

I happen to play or have played almost everything they have. Currently I mostly play EQ2 but I do play Vanguard on Friday nights and Planetside from time to time. If I went to the Fan Faire it would not have been just for Everquest 2 or computerized collectible card games.

Glad you had a good time Troy. Saving my coppers so I can hopefully go next year.

I don't play Vanguard *yet*, but I listen to this program because I find the short life of this game so far very interesting. Once I get a new PC, I will be playing the game and giving it a fair chance :)

I just wanted to say that I enjoyed this episode especially. I can't put my finger on why.. but I enjoyed the freeform format of the show and I was surprised to be so interested to hear about the little details of your trip. It's nice to get a little insight into the community, Sony as a host, all that.

Please keep up the good work. You have really made the show something worth listening to. I started listening to it to learn a bit more about Vanguard, seeing as I have a mac (shush) and can't play it for myself yet, and I have been able to gleam both the good and bad of the game because you take the time to praise and ciritcize, but all the while promoting the type of attitude that I wish more gamers had about MMOs: Here to see what kind of fun I can have given the circumstances, not to cry about what it could be, but exploring it for what it is.

Looking forward to next week's episode!

Thanks for the encouraging words. I often vacillate between trying to produce a straight forward show or one that has my unique signature. It is posts like this that validate Voyages of Vanguard's style.

I know I have said this many time before, but I am so excited about the prospects of the next 6 months in Vanguard. I hope you can divorce yourself of the Mac (I work on a Mac 9 hours a day at work) and buy a PC. Vanguard will be waiting for you, when you do.

'Fantastic show !' by Cryptor

I tend to listen to alot of podcasts when playing mmos if grinding or just questing. Even though I really really do not like Vanguard I love to listen to your podcast. Its funny if you think abou tit since I have no idea what you talk about most of the time ( I played VG closet beta to 3 months after release ). But you are just so passionate about this game that it makes listening to whatever you have to say a pleasure. Keep doing it, you are doing a great work ;)

I gave you a plug on my own podcast ( not nearly as well done ) but if you are interested in checking the plug its http://www.thinktree.ca/mmorpg-podcasts/thinktree-mmo-news-podcast-8-2.html

Great job once again, looking forward to your next show !
