The Drone Bay Podcast #16
Mon, 27 Oct 2008 04:01:00 GMT [download/play]

This week, the guys are back after a break of entirely too long.

This week's discussion centers around a variety of subjects, including the reasons for the long hiatus.

First up is a discussion of the single server model that EVE has been the poster-child for, and the prospects of applying the lessons of a single shard to other games.

Next up, CK discusses the EVE blog banter. Details can be found at his blog.

Finally, some mail and news about Phillip and Stephen's new show, The Warpath, which focuses on Warhammer: Age of Reckoning.

As always, you can contact us at dronebay@gmail.com with your questions, mp3 submissions, or hate mail.

Great show and topics, EVE is one of the most interesting MMO's and you guys bring it out.

About single and multi server MMO's

I think when you have a player run economy that has allot to do with capturing territory then it make sense in is useful in EVE.

There are a lot of good thing the come of both one shard and many though of course.

So I'm thinking you can have many shards in most games out there to get those benefits and do things like have the auction house cover across all the shards and whatever other benefits people can think of to cover all shards to benefit from the entire community.

So many servers with cross some server features would be best imo, for most games.

As far as bigger battles you can always pic a server with higher populations. Although unless you need to protect something around the clock like in EVE then you might at least a server that included all the time zones in the world.

I honestly can't see why CK would agree to come on this show instead of putting out another excellent micro warp cast. On one of the first episodes Crovan owns up as being responsible for 'this mess', it still holds up as the most relevant thing he's ever said.

You'd almost think you were paying for this stuff as opposed to getting it from people who have spent countless hours of their time to volunteer to bring you content. I'd hate to see how you treat people whose content you actually shell out money for. I'm glad not all of our listeners are such self-righteous, bile-spewing proofs of John Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory.

Just admit to the fact you've lost interest in EvE and don't pander to us with a half ass attempt at a podcast to hawk your new interest of the moment. Content of the drone bay slipped ages ago, stick a fork in it Crovan it's done.

Well let me pipe up and say I'm glad to have you back and even though the podcast isn't entirely eve focused, I enjoyed hearing your guys opinions on the sharding of MMOs and hearing about what's been going on with you guys.

One recommendation:
I just play eve, and don't really have any interest in WAR (or Conan) but as you guys have been playing it for a while, could you hit me with a 5 minute or less pitch on what I (as a devout eve player) would find most interesting about WAR? In essense sell me on it without preaching.

Maybe it wasn't the best podcast you've done, and maybe you've been slipping... but you apparently have the most addicted listener base ever. Such that even the people who claim to have known that they hated your show for some time now can't stop listening to it.

I'm not gonna lie, the show WAS pretty bad. It felt like you guys were mostly talking about "whatever". Perhaps some sort of re-focusing is in order... I find that the most compelling aspects of the dronebay were the things that helped players play the game. Things like the mailbag and Don't Panic. Maybe there could be more segments along those lines, or just more topics with the same segments. There should, perhaps, be less focus on "what we were playing besides EVE", or "what's going on in life".

And never heard anything back from Crovan or Al, sorry CK don't think I ever tried contacting you, most likely a mistake but hindsight is well you know....hindsight. I thought the concept and all actually was great addition to EvE community and filled a void that Warp Drive Active had left. Listened in the beginning excited and shows were good and had a purpose, I told many new players to listen and they did. But of late meh it's been as devoid of actual content as a noob system of roids on a thursday night. I can understand new interests whatever, that's all well and good, they seem to be kicking out Warhammer podcasts just fine. And I give CK mad props for his latest endevors and hope beyond hope he continues.

my 2 isk worth.

Hi guys, Haven't posted before, but I have listened to all your episodes- all I can say is it seems your heart doesn't seem into what you are doing right now and this episode shows it. In the past I always heard content rich info for noobs and vets, as well as some in game news and patch info. CK is still into it by the way, but you other guys sound like "we really like this other game we started, but lets make an Eve cast just 'cause we're expected to by our fans." You guys have lots of experience and insight, that's what we want to hear, not just an abbreviated recap any non-player could write. Lots of funny stories in game as well, I'm sure. I hope you don't think this is just trolling as I really like the show. Hope to hear you back in fine form next time.......I haven't lost hope yet.

Title says it all. Crovan and Alsedrich aren't into it. I feel bad for CK having to do such a show. And seriously, don't plug your new cast. If I wanted to hear about another MMO I'd go sign up for your podcast, but I'm subscribed to an EvE podcast.

CK, good job hanging in there. Your a good example of a standup gamer. You balance life, family, gaming and all the extra things you do on the side including your blog and Podcasting. Keep up the awesome work.

I must say I am damned disappointed with Michael from Fly Reckless. He gave you guys a glowing recommendation on his last podcast and so I went to iTunes and looked you up. Bad decision.
There is no way is should take that damned long to get to the freaking point of saying "Hi we are back, sorry we were gone so long!" FFS people it's a 50 min podcast. I gave you 12 minutes before I moved on to something else and that is 12 minutes of my life that I want back.
I suggest you take a page from Michael's book and get to the actual podcast material within the first 2-3 minutes of your 'cast.

'Don't like, it don't listen, or go make something yourself!' by DukeNelson
Submitted on 2008-11-07 13:10:03 CST
Wow ... and not warcraft. ;)

Can't believe that people can actually be negative about a podcast, if you don't like it then turn it off!

While admittedly not my top podcast I do still enjoy listening to Drone Bay, I like what they've tried to do (with new player help) and know that it must take a lot of their time and effort to put this thing together.

My advice to people like econnofoot would be put up or shut up, it's much easier to spout off on a comments section or blog than it is to be constructive and actually spend your time to create something.

If you feel that strongly about it then why not record something to be played on the show, failing that put something together yourself and see how the community likes it.

Eve does have the most vocal and passionate players I've seen in a game yet, but there is a difference between paid content and player created (spending their free time at no cost) content.

Please try to remember that and don't deter people, with more free time and drive than me, who try to support the community.

New Eden will be a sparse, bland place without them!

The reason i'm so displeased is because the show WAS excellent. It brought players to the game and was quite entertaining. I miss that show. If ones priority is placed on a different show then stop making these shows untill your heart is back in it. May i also add this goes for WDA who cannot manage to put out a show in any kind of regularity aka a weekly podcast that comes out every 2 months. That being said at least when it does come out it has substance and i still enjoy listening. This podcast on the other hand does not retain any value. Crovan is a talented podcaster and knew that this was not his best work, or even close to it. It was a plug for his new endevor and thats what truely aggrevated me about it. I have listen to his warhammer podcast and it is VERY good and that is what led to my critisismof this podcast. I know he still "has it" but his heart isnt in this. Done bashing now.

'Can you not read?!' by bookwyrm72
Submitted on 2008-11-07 17:28:20 CST
Perhaps you missed the part of my post where I stated that I listened for 12 whole minutes BEFORE I TURNED IT OFF! So yes I did "stop listening" and I came here to share with the hosts that, in my opinion, they need stop blathering about absolutely nothing and get to the damned point.

After reading the responses I feel the only proper and responsible thing I could do would be to go back and sample some of the earlier podcasts they have available. I only hope that in those previous podcasts they can get into the meat of the show much sooner than they did in this latest 'cast.

I resent fully the label "Troll" applied to me considering that I only searched out this website AFTER finding the 'cast on iTunes and attempting to torture myself by listening to it. I am not one to stand back and wait until a disaster occurs before ranting. I am perfectly capable of ranting on my first visit.

Greetings, Crovan, CrazyKinux and Alsedrech,

I am very disappointed about what is happening on Virgin Worlds MMO Podcast concerning your show. besides real and highly appreciated criticisms there are some freaks having "real issues" ...

Although I am sad about you guys not being so active any more on this podcast, I always liked listening to each of your shows - EVEn the ones that didn't care me a lot; not all episodes can fit a person's taste.

About what is happening on virgin World, well, I'd be not that surprised if you stop doing this show. The criticisms are quite harsh. and as EVE and making podcasts are at least hobbies each of its own, I think, it's cool to quit the one thing when a shipload of asses show up ... ;)

So, looking forward to having new episodes from you guys; but I won't be too disappointed if you stop this show and with it the freakshow by econno and other jackasses ...

Greetings
Maddock Krug

By all means please do, I never had any intent to flame or troll on this site, by at all....I did find the content of drone bay to be crap I registered and said my beef as have others. Crovan obviously, didn't like it(musta taken a job at Applebees I figure) I feel your pain dude times are tough aren't they?

Point is, I downlod a podcast lisen to it on the way to work(generally)....don't throw me some crap...particularly in the morning when I'm already a under coffee'd bitch...I'm gonna go postal...as any one should. If you can't make a consistent EvE related product without schleping other games please don't bother all I ask.

Is that so much?

hmm freak show.....one of us! one of us! one of us!

Greetings.

Ok, I'm sorry about my strong words about you, econnofoot. I was and still am quite disappointed about how serious people take changes on terms of hobby etc. blabla.

Your last reply/ comment and partially answer to what I was writing I like a little more then many of your other postings earlier before that. Reason: You not just only rant. And somehow I get the impression that there is more behind it ...

The point why I checked in for commenting this show was a post by you that has mysteriously vanished and therefore remains part of my strange memories. It was something like: I shoot you, I shoot Urban and Winterblink, I shoot everyone into the face that does not believe in EVE and especially that does not obey my way of thinking ... It was a jackass comment that I simply could not let pass without a comment myself ...

Anyway: As this show perfectly shows: people tend to take things far more serious then they ought to be. And in such cases I really recommend stopping with it or taking a long break; as you and others have really tried hard on the Drone Bay Mods about the Episode 16 telling everyone in the world that it nearly pissed you off, well, this should make your and/ or the mods and/or me (?) think twice about listening to podcasts under terms of enjoying a hobby. That's why I think that a break for this podcast would be sad, but one of two possible reactions to what has happened. The other option remains the one all time long: Drone Bay Mods - Just do it (with whatever contents you like).

Greetings
Maddock

...and I totally don't know why some of my posts show up twice. I never said I was gonna shoot anyone. (Pretty sure I could take Al or Urban, Crovan maybe, Winterbink nope)....that's not at all what I meant at all rather it was more allusing to that if you put out a crap product the community will turn it's back. Warp Drive Active is stuggling and well hey I get tired of EvE as well and have real life issues constantly, (hence I don't shut up and do my own podcast).

If I have been unfair and maybe I have, I apologize. If making an EvE podcast about EvE is too much to ask, and obviously it is. I'll go flame the forums for a bit, doh! patch no forums.

Regardless I'm done.

Hello, I recently just started playing EVE and found your podcasts through listening to other VW ones. Very good but from listening to the last one you have interests elsewhere currently but all the same I just wanted to say your shows have helped.
