Witty Ranter #7
Mon, 21 Apr 2008 00:42:00 GMT [download/play]

In this episode, Adam brings in John the Ancient Gaming Noob, Darren, Brendan, Peter from The Addicted Gamer, and Croven from The Drone Bay to build their idea of a new MMO... that isn't fantasy, and doesn't suck!  The task - we have $50 million from angel investors, and our goal is to make that back in 5-10 years.  With much snark, twisted humor and general silliness, we discuss the Theme and Game Mechanics of our MMO (Why it will kick ass), our target audience (Halo Xbox Live players need not apply!), and finally how we plan to make back that money! (Business Model).  The show was a lot of fun, and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we had recording it.  Enjoy!

Excellent concept for a show! I've been thinking of playing the "Leala's perfect mmo" type game for a while but haven't gotten myself to write it yet.

Just a couple things about your concept. First it's probably a bad idea to make an "M" rated mmo free to play. Its irresponsible to put out content like that so readily available for kids to download, regardless of if they click a button stating that they are over 18 or whatever. Also, isn't the free to play thing basically created for kids and a younger audience. Grown ups who would what to play the "blood, guts and boobs" game you were talking about will have a credit card.

No girls in your game huh? Unless it was a dream I remember discussing (not to long ago) how it is important to include women in an mmo's audience for the sake of the game's community as well as for the $$.

Also, what the heck is with the wanting to put porn or boobs or whatever in an mmo? Keep your "me time" and your gaming time separate please. For the sake of the game and everyone who's playing online with you.

@ Brendan, Who peed in your coffee? Why so angry lately? =)

This was a fun show. Lots of ideas and strong wills! It never went Jerry Springer, but oh! what drama!

As for the "this is EVE" opinions... I think that what does constitute what a gami is like is the 'feeling' of it. I played the original Jumpgate, and when I heard about EVE I said: "just like Jumpgate". But the feel is very different - even if some play elements are similar...

@LealaTurkey: Just go to Brenden's and you will understand! Trust me.

All I could think while you were talking - this sounded like a reenactment of the last Sigil meeting prior to the Jan 2007 release of Vanguard.
Listen to it again with this in will make you laugh
Seriously - Fun stuff

I learned that Brendan + Darren = Fireworks.

Also, there is a difference between PvP in something like TF2 and Eve, namely persistence. I have no problem playing someone in Halo, TF, CoD4 etc knowing that I will die alot due to my skill level. I will not play EVE or any PvP MMO, the gear handicap is just to great.

But anyway. Great show. Oh and I would not not buy the game, but thats just me.

Nice Podcast. All Idea's were great pvp ftl imo.

I just wanted to mention about Stargate worlds

Seems like something new where its going to be a good combination of Solo/team work. It def. is a game that will take off quickly due to the fact that SG has a huge fan base. Now all we can do is hope that the game play is where it needs to be. I would hate to see this MMO fizzle out like so many others.

I know this is a little old, but since you were talking about RTS elements check out Savage 2 and make it in space, maybe?
