'It’s the year 20xx...' by Psyik
Submitted on 2007-11-09 02:41:18 CST
...the Bane have taken over the planet. Humanity is now engulfed in galactic war for life and freedom. Luckily, a single computer brand managed to survive the nigh instant conquest of Earth, and emerge as the resistance forces’ leading computing solution: the DELL XPS!
Yeah, sorry. That’s the reason I’m not in there with you right now. In all honesty. I bought the pre-order, and played until about level 16, then I saw them. The XPS laptop and desktop. And then I logged out. Even now, if I look under my PlayNC account, under “Purchased Serial Codes,” I can see that little line that says “Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa®.” So theoretically, if I select that line and hit continue, I can log right in; my first month is already paid for. But I just can’t do that, because this offends me that much.
As far as I’m concerned, a game should cater to whoever pays for its development and continuation. If a sponsor pays for it, then you cater to them, and you put up adverts for the players to see. If I pay for it, then you cater to me, and don’t put up any adverts. So what’s happening here is we have two sources of money with conflicting interests. Dell no doubt put hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars into this game, so obviously they won’t leave. Since I’ve invested considerably less, I guess I will.
If they ever take out the adverts, I’ll probably come back. Might as well, I’ve already got a month paid for.

Another good one Shawn, keep them up!
I don't see what the big deal is with the Dell PC's. They are in tents, which I gotta be honest, I don't spend much time in there. I haven't even noticed them in the Divide or Palisades. Unfortunately Psyik a recent study showed in game advertising can increase brand recognition up to 64% and a Gamespot study (grain of salt) showed 73% of respondents either didn't have a negative opinion or really care about the ads as long as they aren't intrusive.
I'm a strong proponent of voting with your dollar though so I respect where you stand. I just don't see happiness in your future because unless it's a fantasy based game I think you are going to see it in FPS, RTS, and anything else they can jam it in.

@ Dell - For me this is really a non-issue because if it keeps the game afloat long enough for the player base to flourish, i'm all for it. Lets be honest, this game is a niche product being a shooter and a sci-fi story. If TR needs the additional income from Dell to compensate for the lack of subscriber numbers that it thinks it needs to remain afloat, then keep the ads.
If a game like Saga of Ryzom or Auto Assault could have stayed around longer because of this, don't you think it would be worth it to those who continue to play?
@ Quest Log - Can't agree with you more Shawn. I made it into the Forean Base in Divide last night and if you haven't been there before, there are a TON of quests there. The fact that I capped out my log because I had 2 Targets of Opportunity quests and atleast 6 'badge' quests really irked me. There is nothing I get more upset about than to take the time to complete a quest and find out the guy next to the one who gave me the original quest is sending me back to the exact location! Bogus.
I plan my adventures for the night based on those radio icons, please give us the ability to hold a lot more than 20. On that note, why not just make those ToO and Defense/Offense base quests not actually count toward the total number cap?
Good show Shawn.
'Mission log and product placement' by Sente

They will increase the mission log to 30 in an upcoming patch.
It is not necessary to keep the defense and assult missions in the mission log, it is still possible to collect the tokens. At some point in beta it was necessary as I recall, but that is not the case now.
I do not see why it would have to be an either or when it comes to subscriptions and product placement. The latter will cover some of the costs, but hardly a significant portion compared to the subscription fees. If it gives a bit of extra resources that they can invest in the game and does not disturb the gameplay and experience in general, then I think it is fine.

Great show Shawn.
I don't play TR yet...but may do in the future.
About the DELL in game Ads....if they help keep the game going...its not a bad thing as such (I think)
I suggested this in the Auto Assault forums a few month before the annoucement that the game was going to finish - I was shot down in flames...but as Brackish says - if it can keep the game afloat then it can't truly be a bad thing.
