Getting the babel fish, back on my Apple //e, is one of the highlights of my gaming memories.
When we moved in April of this year, I actually found (again) the cardboard "peril sensitive sunglasses" that came in the box with the game.
I've been back to play the online version, but after two decades it is really hard to get your mind back to that level of simplicity.
(Not that people don't call me simple all the same.)

i thought old school got the quirkyness of teh fact that it was just spelled that way, making it unique to computer chat.

I just listened to the first three episodes of your show, and I really liked it. I look forward to more episodes like the two on Everquest and enjoyed your guests (especially since I like Voyages of Vanguard too).
It will be fun to see what your blog turns out to be like.

I started playing dungeons and dragons in 1978 and played it seriously for 20 years before moving on to MMOs. During that time I also wrote several books for then TSR and went on to publish my own fantasy Opus, Phantasm Adventures. I look forward to the big J talking about the truly early days of role-playing.
The biggest negative to modern day or even contemporary MMOs is the real lack of social interaction and the ability to role-play. Even in the best of servers, these two aspects of the game are horribly lacking. Perhaps one day, we will have such a game as those early sessions I remember in high school, where the characters lived and breathed, and the fellowship amongst the players was very palatable.
