Oh My God Real Life Podcast #13
Tue, 15 Apr 2008 17:47:00 GMT [download/play]

On this lucky number 13 episode of Oh My God Real Life, Jenna and I read over 5 emails, including:

- How to win friends and influence girls: by Shawn and Jenna
- Will my family ever accept my gaming hobby, ever?!
- Jenna and I turn this email about game burnout into a mini-GuildCast episode
- A follow-up from Sam and the problems he had with his whacked-out teacher
- And finally, a sad one by Jared to wrap up the show. /openly_weep

The email as always is show at omg-rl dot com, no matter what Jenna says. And thanks Brad for the sponsorship!

The theme song for OMGRL is "Real Life Drama" by Rackjaw.

Great show again, keep up the good work. I think the both of you make a dynamic duo like Batman & Robin, cept I really don't want to see Shawn in a spandex outfit. Jenna can feel free to pose in the spandex, and keep up the moaning LOL.

I enjoyed this a lot. It's nice to hear from other gamers. =)

Life in general for gamers is very different. Probably because we aren't so much accepted as Jenna had kind of stated. People just dont see video games in the same eye that they see watching sports game in. It's quite an interesting topic if you think about it, especially in psychological sense.

My female friends always call me a nerd, geek, or dork. Ha.. it's not that bad, but they accept me.. in a way. I just prefer to play video games, and they prefer to go bar hopping, or night clubbing.. er whatever it is that they do. It's just a different life style I guess.

As a child from a divorced family, I know how it feels to want to live with your mom even though your dad won the custody case. I had the same issue, but I found a way to get out of it. Once I got my drivers licsence .. I kind of said I was going on a trip to see my mom, and I just never came home. My mom opened up the case again and got custody of me. My father was pretty mad. We didn't talk for years, until he finally got over it. I guess my situation was a bit different. My father was really not the best dad, and he spent most of his time with his new wife. I just didn't feel I belonged there.

All-in-all, I'd have to say that you guys gave some sound advise, and I can't wait to hear from ya'll whenever you put up another podcast.

Toodles,

I agree folks don't take gaming as a hobby/lifestyle like they would something more mainstream, like golf or watching football. My own parents finally quit giving my wife and I a hard time about it when I put it in the perspective that we sit in front of a computer several hours a day, and they sit in front of a TV for about the same time. At least gaming is interactive, whereas a TV is not. But its just that, another activity/hobby, and our relationship is strong (going on 13 years), we still visit with our family/friends as much as we would normally, etc.

You have to sometimes look at in the light of what would you rather have your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse/kid doing ? Going out bar-hopping or clubbing, etc.. or socializing online ? My mom many years ago told my wife that it may be hard to get me to leave the house sometimes, but she would never have to worry about me going off to the bar or going and getting drunk watching football with "the boys". If the worst thing a parent has to worry about is their kids playing too many games, they should be thankful. There is alot of parents with kids in much worse shape, and into much more destructive types of habits/behavior.

'The Problem.. I think' by Luper

I think the problem that parents face is not the issue of them worrying about their child playing too many video games, but more so the fact that their child isn't getting enough exercise. That I do feel is an issue.
