'Good one' by Salox Submitted on 2007-12-10 13:48:58 CST Great show. Looking forward to the 100th podcast. I have an idea for you though. :P You could take some of the most memorable moments in your podcasts and stick them all together. You could have some special guests with commentary and what-not. Would be fun.
I think Star Trek graphics are great and you are right that there is only a limited amount of things you can do with space. The UI does seem a little cartoonish, though. I'm still looking forward to this game however. Should be quite fun since all us trekkies need an MMO too.
Man, I remember when those three guilds took down Kerafyrm for the first time. I was only a level 40 Vah Shir Warrior, but damn that was exciting. I saw all kinds of screenshots and chat logs. Certainly an interesting moment in EQ's history and a memorable one for me.
I played Tabula Rasa in beta too and I really enjoyed it up until the early 20's. While the environments looked great, leveling got really slow and most of the quests were "kill x for x items" and what-not. I might try to go back, but it's unlikely.
Anyway, see ya next time.
'I looked up at the sky tonight...' by scytale2 Submitted on 2007-12-10 14:50:32 CST ....and I thought.....wow a real version of EVE On-line...
For goodness sake, EVE does not own the rights to all science fiction games/films ever invented. VW is almost always totally balanced on the MMO market barring EVE, which seems to receive nothing but praise, when it simply doesn't deserve it - ask everyone who tried it and isn't playing it. There's a whole lot more people not playing it. We also seem to rehash the same old EVE news again and again and again.
For Episode 100, why not have goldfarming Part 2? Or a special Pirates of the Burning Sea noob experiment?
Episode 96, was actually Episode 105 (unless you exclude the people who stood in for you,) but I guess you choose the numbering system.
Anyway, thanks again for your self-sacrificing effort for 105 shows:)
'eve?' by Brent Submitted on 2007-12-10 14:53:53 CST Did I even talk about Eve in this show? :)
Yeah, my numbering keeps me honest.
'EVE in the subconscious...' by scytale2 Submitted on 2007-12-10 19:11:30 CST I think the subconscious brain must be playing EVE all day long, because I think EVE gets at least 2 mentions in every show.
Apparently, Captain Kirk was stolen from an early concept version of EVE On-line...
The second mention was when EVE's new "slightly different coloured pixels" update was released.

'As a slightly bored Eve player' by mchris Submitted on 2007-12-11 00:31:19 CST I agree that Eve seems to attract very little criticism. I don't think it is particular to Brent at all. Eve seems to get such a sweet deal from all of us players, bloggers and podcasters because it provides frustrated MMO players with solutions to problems seemingly inherent in MMOs.
Perhaps the word we want is "admiration". I guess it's very difficult to come down on things we admire.
I'm racking my brains to remember which podcast is was but someone said some very wise things about Eve. Paraphrasing: When someone complains about their current MMO I can always hold Eve up as an example of how CCP avoid/fix that problem. But when asked, I would have to say I have more fun playing MMOxyz than I do playing Eve.
(Anyone know where this is from? I really want to listen again and recommend it.)
The concept of Eve is losing it's grip on me now, and because there is little "fun" to speak of, I can't see myself staying much longer.
'Screen shot from?' by Celestian Submitted on 2007-12-11 15:30:33 CST The image that is on this podcast is from what game? The area reminds me of LOTRO but that quest icon doesn't seem to be... plus I don't recognize the mount.
Anyway, curious what game that shot is from.
'PSU and graphics-subscriptions' by hallower Submitted on 2007-12-11 15:40:33 CST Maybe the Phantasy Star Universe port to the PSP is representative of then industry's growing interest in franchises... different products based on the same story setting. For Everquest, SOE has made RTS and card games now. That sort of thing might become more common in the next few years.
AAA games tend to be subscription-based largely because they're the only ones who have the option of charging a subscription. Bartle can talk all he wants about MUDs, but they don't have near the accessibility of graphical games. The better the graphics of a game, the easier it is for the common consumer to perceive value in in that game (unfortunate or not, that's reality). AAA graphics create an impression that the gamer is getting what they're paying for.
'icon for show' by Brent Submitted on 2007-12-11 15:59:20 CST Celestian - That's an Archlord screen shot
mchris - Regarding Eve: Yeah, I've said that many times I think. Basically, Eve is a near-perfectly designed system that seems to have designed-out the fun. Not all of the fun is out, but it sure is lacking at times.
'Eve' by darrenl Submitted on 2007-12-11 18:32:46 CST @mchris....that was Michael from hardcore Casual that said that on my show a couple weeks ago.
Regarding Eve. Eve is very much like chess. A mentally stimulating game that lots of people would like to play, but would rather not. Strategic, not fun, and played buy a more mature and patient crowd of people.
'Mature and patient?' by Wilhelm2451 Submitted on 2007-12-11 20:32:15 CST Darren, is it you or the guy who keeps stealing your ore that is the mature and patient one? Or is it both of you?
'What is it that I heard Eve had a patch that rewrote the boot ini?' by Shalimar616 Submitted on 2007-12-11 22:15:19 CST Wow!
Just heard the news that on the latest update of the Eve client that the game actually re-wrote your boot ini file on xp machines basically turning it into a paper weight?
Is this true? If so, how could this have slipped into a patch?
I have read a couple of blogs where players machine just ground to a halt after that -- basically leaving it dead in the water.
'Patient and mature' by darrenl Submitted on 2007-12-12 07:47:03 CST ....it's you who is the patient and mature one John. I'm just the fool who can't find that ore stealing bastard and blow him into the cold vacuum of space.
@Shalimar616: The update client didn't re-write your boot.ini file, it deleted it. Luckily, I didn't turn off my computer that night and was just able to replace that file with the backup....took me two seconds to fix it.
'Mature and Patient?' by scytale2 Submitted on 2007-12-12 19:12:25 CST For mature read elderly
For patient read doormat
'So I Play EVE...' by Wilhelm2451 Submitted on 2007-12-12 19:47:33 CST Scytale, I'm fine with the fact that you do not like EVE Online. But going into a whine-fest about other people liking it and calling them names does not seem to be a very effective or constructive use of time your time and effort.
I'll gladly come up with a few adjectives to describe you in return, if you like. Or are you going to try to tell me you didn't just call me an elderly doormat?
Anyway, if you have a better space based MMO to talk about, let us all know.
'We are getting very "forum" these days :D' by mchris Submitted on 2007-12-12 22:13:29 CST Brent, agreed. More like conceptual fun eh!
Darren, thanks, I'll give that another listen. I must say, I wasn't at all taken by the concept of a blogwatch podcast, but it really does seem to work. Some excellent content in the first 15. grats.
Not too sure about the chess metaphor. I think you mean that a lot of people think they would like to play it, but actually find they don't. Yeah, I'm definately one. Although I do love chess (and think it's fun!)
Mature and patient? Well, perhaps. Take a look at this lovely example of MMO player cordiality.
'Glad to here some very obsure segway music' by MarcusV Submitted on 2007-12-13 13:22:34 CST If my ears did not decieve me I heard some old Dream Theather from their Images and Words album goin on there.
Brent I have been a long time listener and just wanted to say you continue to be AAA in qulaity and quantity sir. Which is quite a rarity in podcasting
