'Another great show.' by kain Submitted on 2006-12-04 05:45:44 CST Well the title goes without saying but who would shun a complement.
I listened to you on the WoWpodcast and I have to say you three were like the prophets spreading the the truth about WoW and parrying the other speakers fanboiness.
I am a big believer in the open sourcing of ryzom and have donated. With the power of a community developing every thing from "Different Games" (ala fans of nitch games of old can resurrect their games) to a "quick play" game (with easy leveling and gear) the possibilities are endless.
Valastraz is great. When I was fighting him on the BWL test server first attempt we thought "Hey he's at 30%? How hard can he be?" Well he is the only mob(in bwl) that the greatest guilds still wipe to(GG BurningAdren). I blame him for me being poor when I played that game. As for WoW PvP ..... I am shrugging off all existence of it. EQ2 at least comes out with expansion as you said.
Don't worry Brent if you ever pull a "Ten Ton Hammer" I will punch you, but I never see that happening so you don't have to fear my metallic knuckle implants.
'Kami was highlight of the show' by Sheldrake Submitted on 2006-12-04 20:38:44 CST Hearing Kami present his article was the highlight of the show. That Scottish accent was so cool and was a treat for the ears. I wonder if Scots/Brits/Irish etc know of the fascination that a lot of Americans have with "foreign" accents? On a serious note, he did make a lot of good points about the various ways newbies are successfully or unsuccessfully introduced into MMORPGs. I remember the first time I went through the EVE tutorial it took me over 3 hours to complete. To be fair, the first couple of levels in WOW took that long as well, it just didnt seem like I was "in" a tutorial at the time.. and maybe that is part of the success of WOW. In contrast, I just started a new toon in EVE the other day because of the Revelations expansion released recently and I sprinted through the same tutorial in about 30 minutes. Familiarity is a factor, I guess.
Lauren had a great segment as well. Albeit a bit long I think. She spent quite a bit of time complaining about the nature of PVP in her segment... and I have to say... thats what you get for CHOOSING to play on a PVP server. There is really no point in complaining why PVP is as bad as it is... because PVP behavior stems from 2 (I think) fundemental flaws:
1. People are evil
2. There are no real consequences for dying.
And I am not sure how those can be addressed by the current market/playstyles available to us.
'Yay' by Bman Submitted on 2006-12-05 00:15:18 CST Awesome segments from Kami and Lauren! I hope you'll both send in more stuff in the future.

I'd love there to be a debate on RMT. I loved Doug's segment and agreed with everything he said. I too have some things i'd love to say on the matter. However i cant wait to hear Brenden's opinion on it too.
'Buying Items' by r4nge Submitted on 2006-12-05 15:29:08 CST First comment but longtime listener. Love the show!
Doug, who had some airtime regarding buying gold, was pretty much wrong. I have barely any time to play games but I refuse to buy gold. It's part of the fun, to best the challenges without artificial help.
He paints the picture of those with time to play the game as basement dwelling scum, while he is "the good guy" with a wife and kids. Ok, well he wins at life but he should "lose" at the game. You can't have it all.
The height of pathetic was reached when he spoke about the Hulk game. It was unfair that he couldn't see the whole game because he sucked or whatever. A game requires interactivity and skill, it is NOT a tv show. Doug, go watch TV.
'10/10 Again' by Spyte Submitted on 2006-12-06 05:13:38 CST Long time listener, first time poster.
Really enjoyed Kami's segment - where I live, in Manchester UK, an accent like that says "Are we getting some good drugs soon? Or can we progress straight to a good natured brawl?" And you guys should take a trip to Edinburgh - Kami sounded quite Edinburgh to me, but I could be way off - or Glasgow and hear the Scots girls with that voice .... omg
I have a suspicion that in part 2, Doug is gonna let us know that he was joking in Part 1. I do have a question for him that would clarify a lot of what he's saying: Is he supporting the buying of gold in games where that is presently against the EULA? Or just in games where that's permitted, like Second Life and SOE's exchange servers? It's not really clear what he's actually advocating.
I enjoyed Lauren's piece too, although not as much as Brent & Brendan's EQ2 chat on Falcon Twin.
'Great listen' by spinlock Submitted on 2006-12-06 11:40:16 CST Enjoyed the latest podcast. Lots of good stuff including calling out Brent on his WoW bashing.
Doug had some controversial comments which is great to get the ideas flowing. When you buy a game do you have a right to see all the content? I think this argument is flawed since obviously you should know what kind of game you are buying and the requirements of that game including time. For example, if you buy a PC game and then go home and realize that you have a Mac, should you have a right to see the content simply because you plunked down your hard earned money? Is there some requirement /responsibility with the purchaser?
'Hmmm.. Where to start?' by Maess Submitted on 2006-12-06 15:39:45 CST Brent, great show as usual. Was that Dante's Lounge on the post out?
Ok, here we go:
r4nge, not everyone plays games in the same way or for the same reasons you do. As a rational person I am sure you realize that.
My take on item and gold buying is that unless it directly affects you, then live and let live. I've played many MMOs and I have yet to see a game where gold or item buying has directly effected someone else's game play. Some people have more money than time, it's a fact of life that game players need to deal with.
That said, I personal have never bought items or gold for real world clink and I probably never will. However, I can see why people would and it does not bother me one bit that they do. Besides, back in DAOC I had tons of fun crushing players who knew nothing about their newly purchased level 50.

'RMT position' by Brent Submitted on 2006-12-06 16:00:00 CST Maess, I get the distinct impression that you're speaking of Doug's RMT segment. I should perhaps make this clear: I don't necessarily share Doug's opinion. Doug presented part one of a case he's building, and thus far the responses here and in my email box have been insanely polarized. People either loved what he said or are calling for his immediate execution.
This split makes the topic all the more interesting and you can be sure that it'll be treated as an ongoing topic as Doug completes his portions and the rest of you begin to forumlate responses. I've already received some very good rebuttals in my email and there are a few above as well. My personal perspectives on the topic will become clear over time...
If you can't wait to hear some initial ideas and more discussion on this check out WoW Podcast #7 at http://www.wowpodcast.com The topic came up there under a slightly different angle but it is quite interesting.
Do I need to putting a disclaimer on the podcast that says: The opinions presented by guests or co-hosts does not necessarily represent the views of VirginWorlds? Heheh....
'Clarification' by Maess Submitted on 2006-12-06 16:04:00 CST Actually, I was responding to r4nge's post where he basically called Doug pathetic. I should have been more clear.
'Maess' by r4nge Submitted on 2006-12-06 16:42:10 CST I would never have called him pathetic if his piece didn't contain so many smears to those who have more time than money. I went and listened to it again and the guy is clearly putting down the "losers" who play alot.
The fact is that is that the way he plays DOES affect me. It is, after all, a massively multiplayer game. For example I am a rabid Darkfall fanboy because of the competitive factor of the game, full pvp, and full loot. I will only play on a pvp enabled server in any game. It should be me vs. them. Not me vs. them + their CEO income.
He asks if their should be a warning on the box that says unless you have a mountain of free time, you are screwed. I say, there may not be a warning, but there is a EULA. Follow it.
And don't worry, Prognosticator, I was under no impression that you agreed with Doug's statements.
'Traditional Twink vs RMT Twink' by Maess Submitted on 2006-12-06 16:50:03 CST r4ange,
You make a good point with the edge given in a PvP game when a player has access to gear that they may not have access to based on the amount of time they have put into a specific character. However, is there really any difference between an traditional twink (an alt of a player with access to uber gear) or a twink made through RMT? In a gear based game both are going to be hard to beat.
You are right, however, Doug does resort to ad hominem attacks, and that doesn't do much to further his position.
Maess
'twinks' by r4nge Submitted on 2006-12-06 17:07:53 CST You are right, technically there is no difference. In my mind, I just want to believe that a twinks "father" gave them the stuff and it was earned within the confines of the fantasy world.
I'm just bitter about being poor mostly.
'I don't get it...' by Wilhelm2451 Submitted on 2006-12-06 20:20:24 CST One thing I do not follow that often comes up in gold buying discussions is the idea that gold buyers are kids using their daddy's credit card. Is there some basis in fact behind this common stereotype, or is it just what people want to believe?
If there was one time in my life that I would have never needed to buy gold, it was when I was young and had tons of free time. I would have worked every in-game angle like a rabid squirrel to get cash, but I would have had the time to do that and level my character up and play two other games to boot.
So it seems odd that Doug's complaint, the classic "youth is wasted on the young," attacks kids who have too much free time, while those oppose his view attack kids using daddy's credit cards. Who are these kids with free time and rich dads? Can't we get them their own server? I bet their daddies would buy them one!
In the end, game design is what gives the gold sellers their edge and banning accounts does nothing but make gold for sale more scarce, so they just raise the price a bit. 900g for an epic mount in WoW, that drives gold sales more than any Google ad.
'Whee' by Shawn Submitted on 2006-12-07 10:46:04 CST Pretty easy episode for you, eh Brent? ;)
I enjoyed hearing the different voices and the different opinions. I think Doug's segment was good timing for me since in that last episode of GuildCast I talked about my views on buying gold on eBay, including a little admission myself.
Lauren's segment was nice, although I had no clue what she was talking about most of the time. But thats what I get for being exclusive to Guild Wars. She sounded enthusiastic and interested in what she was discussing, which is always a good thing.
Kami was good as well. And yes Kami, American girls go nuts for your accent :)
I have to say though, through all of this, no one beats Brenden. I've subscribed to Falcon Twin to hear his rants alone!
'Easy street' by Brent Submitted on 2006-12-07 12:55:49 CST Shawn, I'd love to say it was easy, but editing Lauren and Doug's segment for them probably made it about as much work as it woul dhave been anyway since I had to edit nearly and hour and a half of content despite onyl recording 30 minutes myself, but I guess it was a little easier. :)
Kami, he's such a lady's man.
Heheh, Brenden is the king ranter around here and anywhere he shows up. No doubt about it. So many ranters out there have the frustrations and anger but lack the intelligence to back up the rants, so when a guy like Brenden or Ryan from MOGarmy start in on a rant, its like the stars of of fury align perfectly to create pure art. The Art of the Rant. Now there's a book that would sell a million copies.

''Dougs' piece' by Dean Submitted on 2006-12-19 00:31:39 CST If your going to buy gold/items why bother playing the game? Totally dont understand that.
MMO's are all about character progression, if you simply buy whatever you want, what exactly are you playing the game for?
Your not going to see more content with all the best equipment, to see the end game content you need to have more time to dedicate rather than have more money.
Sorry I just thought Doug sounded rather bitter about not having enough time to play whatever MMO he is playing, why take it so seriously Doug, as you said youself its just a game.

If your going to buy gold/items why bother playing the game? Totally dont understand that.
MMO's are all about character progression, if you simply buy whatever you want, what exactly are you playing the game for?
Your not going to see more content with all the best equipment, to see the end game content you need to have more time to dedicate rather than have more money.
Sorry I just thought Doug sounded rather bitter about not having enough time to play whatever MMO he is playing, why take it so seriously Doug, as you said youself its just a game.
