Episode 141 Discussion Thread

'I mean who cares?' by BurntSushi
Submitted on 2009-03-18 17:40:40 CST
Nothing against the host on this show, but seriously. Who cares about PoTBS anymore, its like having a show dedicated to Matrix Online or Planetside.

The host did a great job at interviewing but the subject of the show was poor.

I found the show quite interesting despite never caring about the pirate genre ( nothing against the game ). Well done Urban.

Why else would you post your comment?

Oh yeh, you're a prick.

I'd have to agree with BurntSushi on this one.

I was looking forward to listening to the VW News podcast but when I saw that this was a full length interview on PoTBS I just slowly backed away...

I really enjoyed the show even though like Token, I have never played PotBS nor do I know much about Flying Labs. It was great to hear a CEO of a company talk so enthusiastically about their product.

I don't see anything wrong with having the occasional podcast dedicated to a niche MMO. Yeah sure I was also looking forward to hearing Brent's take on recent news stories in the industry, but I assume he didn't have time to record this week. It's better to have a quality interview than nothing at all, is it not?

...and you don't like the game, means that the interview (which you said was good) suddenly wasn't good? (Wait a second, Pag, YOU DIDN'T EVEN LISTEN TO IT?)

What are you, 13 years old?

Mom: Here, take this toy.

Kid: YAY! Toys!

Mom: It's from your step-father.

Kid: Ugh! I hate him! Suddenly I have distaste for something that I once loved...Whoa!

A simple, VERY simple question:

Is it possible, in all the powers of the universe that there ARE people that actually care about the game, and like to hear interviews with game-makers DESPITE their game? After all, it is JUST VIDEO GAMING.

MMO snobs, jeesus.

Never said the interview was good. Never said the interview wasn't good. No, I didn't listen to it. Why in the world would I listen to something that doesn't interest me whatsoever? I wasn't even going to post a comment at all until I saw you overreact big time and call the author of a reasonable complaint a prick.

If you reread my OP you will see all I said was that PoTBS just didn't interest me. I'm still confused as to why you are making a big deal out of this.

Also, you can't have it both ways when it comes to insults. You can either take a condescending tone and equate me to a 13 year old kid, or you can take the opposite approach and call me an elitist MMO snob. It kind of defeats your own argument when you use both at the same time.

I just want to know if it's possible in all the powers of the universe that someone can post a criticism of a shows topic (and praise the execution, mind you) without being berated.

The guest host did a fine job. It is always good to hear about what someone is doing in the mmo industry - whether one personally plays the game or not.

Side note to Beau: I have always been able to give as good as I get but p*** for posting a comment about the show has finally gone over the top. If you are going to insult the listeners at least try and make the insult a bit creative and take it out of the juvenile school yard name calling - you are not back on the block.

...so next time I will just consult with you. Before you get all jumpity, think for a second. You know I'm right..you get into it with listeners more than most, including myself. Burnt just sets me off, and sometimes the quicker route is the smarter one. I'm sure he'll be just fine.

As far as PotBS, I agree with Token. There's something about the pirate genre that does not capture my imagination like dragons, space ships or aliens. Not sure why. I think the game-play is good, but something about the NPC's and the towns feels a bit cartoonish. I had always hoped the avatar game would feel as "realistic" (and a bit dark) as the ship combat.

I was looking forward to a standard VW style news discussion, but when it wasn't what I was looking for, I just stopped listening and went to something else. I think I switched over and listened to Spouse Aggro or Through The Aftermath. I do that with the TV too when I find I don't want to watch something, I just stop. On a side note,I have played POTBS and didn't care for it myself.

I do think we need a BurntSushi, Beauturkey, Julie Whitefeather barbed wire Texas cage match on PPV for VirginWorlds. Yall just seem to push each others buttons on a regular basis on here or other forums that you end up on. I hate to say it, but it does get a bit old seeing the constant back and forth between yall on whatever comment one of you makes about.. well, anything.

Old people are grumpy. We all think we know best.

But in this case, I am always right.

The show was good, which is typical for VW. Nothing against Brent, but we all know that Brent is not known for a non-stop roller coaster ride of a show..he is a newsman, if you ask me.

PotBS is interesting because it is doing what a lot of games are doing: being played. We all get wrapped up in our podcasts, our blogs, whatever...meanwhile most people are playing the games.

Funny thing is, Brent is one of the funniest and excitable guys I have met met in person! lol I thought he'd be all like "Hi Beau, I'm Brent from T.V.'s Virgin Worlds.." but he was a big, skinny NERD...a glorious nerd, not afraid to get on the floor to be arrested by stormtroopers.

"Why else would you post your comment?

Oh yeh, you're a prick.

Beau"

Wow.... lol..... just wow.

I just thought that the interviewer did a great job but thought that the content seemed a bit dated for an mmo newscast. I really think that something more current would of been more interesting, Star Trek Online, Stargateworlds, DCUO or Fallen Earth.

I listened because I thought it might give me some insight into the game itself, but it really didn't. It would be great insight for someone who has actually played the game. I think that the interview could of been condensed a tad bit and added on to the end of a VW show.

For Beau's comments, well I never put much thought into what he says and I will just simply ignore him from this point on. At the end of the day to get in a verbal fight with him will just end up making me look bad and take away from what I am talking about (like it has before). I have grown tired of the back and forth between us.

Blimey! I didn't think I would cause this much of a riot just by doing an interview!

Can everyone take a deep breath and calm down please.

For those of you who like the interview, Thanks for listening.

For those of you who didn't like the interview, don't worry I'm sure normal VW service will be back soon with Mr Brent dulcet tones telling you all the news.

Thanks to Brent for putting the show up and thanks to Rusty from FLS for taking the time to talk to me.

Don't get me wrong. I like your interview style. I just didn't feel that PoTBS is really relevant. I look forward to hearing from you more but I just want to hear things that are upcoming or new to the market, not something that is old and dated.

Hey there,

Well the first thing to say is that interviews with CEO's are pretty hard to set up, they take a lot of time and effort to arrange, and thats assuming the company doesn't completely ignore you!

Remember that we are "non-conventional media" and frankly a lot of companies don't even bother to reply to emails we send. Rusty is a busy man it was very good of him to spend the time to talk to me.

As for the relevance, well there is quite a lot of stuff in the interview (admittedly towards the end) about what Rusty's take on the industry during these difficult economic times and the challenges and opportunities that presents.

What ever you think about the changes to POTBS, I think that counts as news worthy.

I should also point out that putting out this show has in no way effected the release schedule of VW's normal shows. I look on it as a free extra bonus show, rather than an "instead of"

I feel you're way off base by stating that PotBS is not relevant. Any MMO currently on the market is relevant. By what you're stating, you're telling everyone who plays PotBS and enjoys it, that they're wrong. And age definitely does NOT define relevance.

EQ turnd 10 this month, is it no longer relevant, even though it pretty much set the stage for all current MMOs? If so, I think it's 500,000+ past and present subscribers would disagree. If VW did a show on EQ, I'm sure plenty of people would find it relevant. And yes, Matrix Online and Planetside are relevant as well.

Oh, and WoW is now pushing 5 years old, so I guess it is no longer relevant either? It came out 3 years prior to PoTBS. Remember, just because a game isn't brand new or doesn't have millions of subscribers, doesn't mean it is no longer relevant. I'll even bet that there's at least 1 person who listened to this show and decided that they'll give PotBS a try. And who knows, it may be their new favorite MMO.

@UrbanMongral:

I was interested when he talked about the industry and enjoyed that. I also appreciate the time and effort it takes to get a company man to talk about their product.

@Jmo:

I never said that someone is wrong for playing the game. As for as what is relevant, well what is more relevant? WoW, LoTRO, WAR, EQ, EQ2 or PoTBS? Just seems to me that dedicating a whole show (When VW is a news source) to PoTBS seemed a little too much. Like I said before a segment comprised of this information wouldn't of been bad, but the interview was a little long winded.

I think it's true that when an MMO gets past it's 1st stages, it will start to get even better by leaps and bounds. PotBS seems to be getting better at the time when it should so that's cool.

It sounds like Russ has got realistic goals for Pirates and in the future when I get interested in pirates and that stuff I'm looking forward to playing it for sure.

When Russ started explaining how they started the PotBS MMO I started to understand more about how it is important to make a good game and not just to sell the initial boxes. I agree.

Was that the CFO of Sony who was playing PotBS & he noticed a problem and let them know about it and how to fix it was cool. It is nice to be part of a huge team like Sony even though they still are in charge of their own game.

That was great how Russ was able to talk about all sorts of many aspects of things you do making and progress with an MMO.

I would like to hear about the creation of the lands and places you go in game and towns and stuff next time. But it was cool how Urban was able to ask Russ almost anything and Russ would answer.

Nice take on the take on the economy and how companies who give good product for the money still do good but then some companies get too greedy. I for one would rather take the rout were mmo's spend money but not gamble and over spend and go into huge debt. Stick with the budget and those games do the best imo in the long run like EVE and WoW imo And yes a game can be great no matter how many people are playing it, the company just needs to know how to spend and not spend and no use too much debt or none at all would be good.

Urban, it was nice to hear you in addition to your regular pod casting. I think you did a good job in asking questions about so many different aspects across the board and it was cool how you let him talk about CCP too. They are big fans of CCP so they must be pretty cool.

First off, Have some of you lost your damn minds? Wow let it go, and move on.
This is going to be the way the show goes for a while. Did you not! here what Brent said? News has got old and not fun for him. He is looking for ways to keep it going and not do a podfade. So the days of having Brent read the MMO news to us week after week is over. I am not saying he will never do the news again, but it's not going to happen like it use to. He has asked for people's help on writing up the new, editing, and any thing that can help him make the show. If (and I bet this is why) no one had any thing for him, He will go with things like this. I for one am glad to at lest have this, Than nothing at all. Beside's Urban did a great job, and Jmo has it right when he said that "Any MMO currently on the market is relevant."

Remember where you are! This is VW and we don't act like all them othere people on every othere forums. Have some pride as to who we are.

Never had a fish try to sell me a vacuum, although I did once have an armadillo try to pawn off a full set of "The complete works of Danielle Steele". This was an occurance that I've tried not to mention, partially from the fact that I'm embarassed that it even happened, and partially because the armadillo bashed in my windshield for laughing at him. I had no idea armadillos took things that serious.

On a completely separate note, thanks Urban for that interview... Potbs has always fascinated me and to hear Russel's enthusiasm for the game makes me want to give it another go!

I like interviews. This is a good one. GJ, Urban.

POBS is a good niche game, but doesn't get the coverage it deserves. It takes the MMO genre further, not just by a new setting, but by making combat much more tactical and positional. Not a button mashing exercise. I've been wondering about going back for a while now "" getting bored of Eve tbh. Want to see what's changed for myself.

Also, re MMO news, Van Hemlock and Jon are now doing a really excellent job elsewhere in the collective. Brent can put his feet up, if he wants "" the rest of his guild are stepping up and taking the aggro.
