'LiverGamer...' by Dathmar Submitted on 2008-03-07 05:23:26 CST Is it Robust and Scalable by any chance ?
Sorry had to say that one...
Joking aside - if this take out gold farmers and chat spam from ALL the games I play - more power to them.
Seems that now days every game I play has gold selling spam constantly and it seems to be getting worse.
'CCP on borrowed time?' by scytale2 Submitted on 2008-03-12 13:48:27 CST Once again it's clear that CCP have far more money than they know what to do with. They employ economics and psychology professors when 95% of the intellectual target market of MMO players think their game is too boring to play.
I guess it's too hard for them to develop anything really creative, but if they don't the first half decent SF MMO will take most of their players.
Livegamer - sounded a bit uninteresting really, but since you mention it, Brent, it must be worth keeping an eye on.
'CCP is the 'Frazier' of MMOs' by Geirr Submitted on 2008-03-15 10:33:25 CST Some counterpoints to Scytale's perspective:
No argument, EVE appeals to a niche market. If it's a 5% market and they can make 'far more money than they know what to do with', why change the formula? The inference is that CCP should be looking to make EVE as accessible as other popular "95%" games.
When the pilot episode for the 'Frazier' sitcom aired, studio execs recommended the producers 'dumb down' the comedy. They felt it would go over the heads of the audience. To the benefit of audiences everywhere, the producers resisted, opting to retain the more cerebral (sometimes) humor, and the show became a long-running success. I see EVE in a similar light - the game is harsh, unforgiving, and decidedly not your normal MMO fare. Just as Frazier wasn't for everyone, neither is EVE. The continual assumption that any MMO has to chase huge subscriber numbers does a disservice to the companies looking to put out a quality game.
Technical issues aside, can you imagine what Jita would be like if EVE had 1 million players? 5 million?
Regarding Scytale2's comment about creativity, EVE contains features that even current-gen games have yet to pick up on (unsharded worlds, real-time based training, player-owned areas of the universe, council of stellar management).
I don't mean for this to sound like a rant, but comparing EVE (or many other 'niche' MMOs) to the big games is like comparing a corner deli to Wal-Mart. They serve different purposes and audiences.
