TenTon Loves VirginWorlds
Aug 15, 2007 12:25:00

Even if VirginWorlds has a fraction of the traffic, at least I know that one other MMORPG site thinks the VirginWorlds website design is good.

Well, you know what they say about imitation and flattery and all that.

Oh, and "You're Welcome" for the web design lessons. The good news is that the great content at Ten Ton (seriously) is no longer wrapped in a website resembling a sliced turd. It's starting to come together. Hey TenTon...keep watching this space for more ideas! Podcasting class starts at noon sharp, don't be late.

Outgoing hits to Ten Ton Hammer from VirginWorlds: 75,000+
Incoming hits from Ten Ton: 1, directly to my CSS page.
(Ok, I'm kidding, actually it is zero.)

Totally agree that it is his doing. He's denying it so far. I'd say it was Coyote but we all know he's busy browsing around the web for cleavage shots to include in his posts (which we all appreciate).

I should add that I'm justing giving TTH some good natured grief here.

It was a small discussion topic (online school) about navigation and ease of use. Your site was one of 3 that I used. I'm in the last week of the class, and I still haven't missed a point. So, yes, it worked. :)

'Sorry man - I don't see it.' by Leonai

Sorry - I don't see it. Yes, the color scheme is similar, but really - the colors are somewhat standard for gaming sites. The whole orange/grey/silver wooshy mechanic DARK DOOM AND GLOOM thing is typical and lately, imo, overdone. It's nearly Emo. No offense intended, just an observation. Really, gamespot founded the color scheme back 5 years ago.

To me it doesn't look like they stole your design... it looks more like they stole MMORPG.com's design... for which Craig at MMORPG might be snickering... but sorry man. I really don't think they stole your design.

Um, I'm just giving them grief.

Site design / site colors - two different things.

'Site design / site colors - two different things' by Leonai

Kind of. Site design = the combination of Workflow, Build, and Color Scheme. It's the whole picture.

As far as workflow and build are concerned (which I think is more what you're talking about, please correct me if I'm wrong), I still tend to disagree. The whole static-image nonrepeating image to base background became a sort of new industry standard 2 years ago with the dawn of more advanced browsing coupled with XML CSS coding. It's certainly nice and I LOVE the usage, but it's not really "stealing" when hundreds of sites are doing it across the net - especially media type sites. It looks fantastic, and to have content flow over the static background is great.

Toolbar up top - again, standard. Makes sense, easy way to locate information. Sweet! Usability is awesome and it makes sense... but that's been an internet standard since people could code HTML frames back when internet explorer was in version 3.5 to 4.0.

So what's left? Content on the primary bar, links to the side. Still pretty standard as long as it's done right. It can be done wrong and make people confused. You do it very nice - then the linkies along the bottom just make sense and are unique to your site. Not many places do that and it's a service to the community to have them there plus they're non-obtrusive.

Going back to what I said before - I don't think they stole your build. Their site looks more like mmorpg.com if anything.

'Poo' by Scott

Their old design definately needed some love, good to see they updated it, extremely busy on the eyes, but that's to be expected with a commercial site.

Brent, if you're going to implement thread locking, the Wordpress blog system has great addons for it, like autolocking posts after [x] days with no comments, after [x] many comments, or after [x] days regardless. Works great on my site.

'VW is custom' by Brent
Submitted on 2007-08-15 17:32:58 CST
Good tip Scott but the code behind VW is all custom so a Word Press plugin wouldn't work. Nevertheless, I could code one in just a few minutes if I needed to. So far, I haven't needed to.

"Hmm, looks like I need to code a thread locking feature first."

You don't have threads because you don't have a forum. You have comments. You need to be able to turn off comments for a news item or blog entry.

'Code' by Scott
Submitted on 2007-08-15 17:41:18 CST
Yeah, I was thinking you could borrow the PHP code from the plugin, but it would be easier to code it up from scratch as it's a pretty simple feature.

It's main purpose is to prevent spammers, or visitors from commenting on old posts.

BTW, I'm don't see any cleavage shots on the TTH site, I'm calling shennagans. :P

OMG! Warn a gal next time, Brent! I'm at work! Those bottom shots are NOT work safe - so if any of you clicky on Brent's little teasing link - reading the text = funny, the pictures along the bottom = not safe for work. They're ALMOST safe, but a little tiny bit that's poking out puts them over that edge.

'Hey Miles Standish' by Coyote
Submitted on 2007-08-16 15:06:52 CST
Not safe for work? WHY?

Because of a bit of bottom boob? There is no nipple, nothing sexual, and if it were on top, you'd not have flinched.

Don't go slappin' the NSFW label down on me there Mother Theresa, jus' 'cause a little bit of skin got yer eyes all poppin' out.

There is never nudity, never vuglarity, and it is completely safe for work.

Besides...call me KooKy...but shouldn' ya be WORKIN' at work?

I read Coyote's blog at work.

I like showing the pictures to my coworkers. Good times.

'blugh' by Leonai
Submitted on 2007-08-16 15:22:32 CST
Just because your work is cool enough to consider those as safe doesn't mean MY work is that cool.

And I'm a service desk tech, so as long as I'm helping people out when they call, general "work safe" content browsing is entirely in the realm of WORKIN' while at work. Man, I love my job!

'Polly Puritan' by Coyote
Submitted on 2007-08-16 15:42:12 CST
Well it all boils down to your defination of NSFW now doesn't it.

If beach wear and bikinis are a no-no to your work site, or raise red flags, then yes, I guess it is not safe for work.

But by your initial response people would think that I'm running porn banners and hardcore donkey-on-granny-midget scenes. I'm not, by far. Trust me, I asked and they said no.

It was all in tone and reaction. I'm just saying, yes - you'll have cleavage and bikini pics, but since Brent said "If you want cleavage, go to Coyote's site", you kinda already knew that...

So you knew where you were going, yet you still reacted as if I was makin' moany climax noises in the back of the theater while huckin' spoonfuls of mayonaise at people.

I'm just saying - my site is PG-13 at the worst and not the blatant porn-fest yer reaction implied.

'Worksafe at a glance' by Leonai
Submitted on 2007-08-16 16:57:04 CST
Uhm - did I find a shiny red coyote button?

All the pics up until the bottom ones I agree with you on, but if one of my coworkers or my bosses were to come behind me when looking at the last ones, there would be some serious questions at a glance. Just because technically they didn't show anything but skin, they get SO close to showing more that they might as well show it all - plus I work at the corporate HQ of a company office and have people from the field coming behind us all the time. There is a huge difference between obvious beachwear and a top w/ a woman who's cleavage is nearly falling out the bottom. You are right to say that it's PG-13, but PG-13 also lets you see near full nudity at times.

I'm entirely open to debate about that point further - but not here. Send me an IM, PM, or an email if you REALY want to argue the point.

I was waiting on Brent to link the donkey-on-granny-midget scenes too before I call shennagans again.

Perhaps Coyote shouldn't tease us so.

Oh and for those claiming NSFW, "tiny bit poking out", "SO close", "might as well", "nearly falling", "near full" do not make it so. Heck if I were to object to anything on that page for not being safe it'd be the old pics of the wrestler Chyna.

'tis not my doing. You guys don't understand: I'm basically the glorified coffee boy at TTH. The only thing saving me from latte runs is that we have a virtual office. They don't ask me about things like site design.

And Coyote's blog is great. Especially on slow mornings when you can really use a nice pick me up. ;)

Also, I vote pink, Brent.
