MMO Blogosphere Pervasion Rating
Dec 15, 2006 18:49:02

Last week the blogosphere went crazy posting diagrams of linkage and stats from bloglines. I felt like most of those methods of examining the community and the relative popularity of various MMO blogs to be somewhat flawed. This one probably is too... what I did is searched Google for the url (not including http://www.) for each of the blogs below and recorded the number of hits it came up with. This is a relatively solid measurement of how frequently these sites are linked out on the internet and gazing down the list, there aren't too many surprises. This would look better as a link cloud I suppose. Take a look.

Give it time Darren, the longer the blog is there and active the more it'll start getting spread around. This method I used also doesn't really judge blog popularity as much as the site's penetration into google. For example, way more people read the blog of Scott Jennings (Broken Toys) than VirginWorlds, or at least I'd expect so, but people more frequently post links to the content on VirginWorlds than they they do Scott's stuff. So, its a very specific kind of measurement.

I thought mine would have a higher perversion rating.

Dundee...I think thats another type of website rating you're thinking about ;)

Brent...hey man, I'm just happy to be nominated. It's really not bad for being "live" for essentially 2-3 weeks.

I felt like most of those methods of examining the community and the relative popularity of various MMO blogs to be somewhat flawed.

Oh yeah, fwiw, I wasn't going for a popularity rating (or even a list of MMO blogs), but rather to list - a bit tongue in cheek, too - some data I had compiled: the feeds that many mmo blog feed readers had in common.

Only one real surprise. Slashdot, Boing Boing, etc., I expected. The link to the DVR site made me think 'LOL', if not quite do it. :)

'Flaws with this' by cyanbane

One thing I can see as a flaw with this is that each domain links back to itself. ie Kotaku has a lot of links back to Kotaku and since Kotaku is popular and gets crawled by Google all the time, Kotaku gets to index a lot of links back to Kotaku (which all get counted in your results). So it is kinda an exponential snake eating itself (the more popular the site, the more it gets indexed, the more it's own links to iteself get index, etc, etc). For example do a search for "" and then do one for "" (which is the same query minus all the kotaku links) and you will see that it is now 800k which is 200k short, which may only be 20% but look is still more pages than anyone beyond rank 6 in your list.

Also there are tons of Google factors associated with getting a site crawled IE Tobold's could be skewed for better because he is on blogspot and Google has easier access to index all the pages of blogspot/blogger blogs (because they own Blogger) as compared to terranova (who is on a competing blogging platform with

I don't know what would be the best way to rank these, but Google probably isn't it as they have a vested interest in almost everything under the sun now, and don't get me started on Alexa :)

I apparently would be on this list if I had been checked (105 hits) . Way to be the little fish in the big pond !

'Fluctuations' by Wilhelm2451

I am interested in how much this number fluctuates from day to day. I was at 256 when Brent did his searches. I check it myself every once in a while and have seen TAGN as high as 290 and as low as 230. Today I happen to be at 249.

I'm a few blocks from Google, I should go over and ask them what the heck this means.

'Fluxes and Datacenters Oh My' by cyanbane
Submitted on 2006-12-21 23:37:08 CST
Anytime you query google you get sent to its one of many datacenters, you are never guaranteed to hit the same one each time (to see which one your query is on just hover your mouse over one of the "Cached" link for any of the results, the first part of the URL (the domain which will be an IP) is the a marker for the datacenter you are hitting, if you search at different times of the day or even back to back you may be hitting a different datacenter with a different results set so that might be the reason you are getting different results (also can just be the ebb and flow of google as a whole)
