'Rest Shrines equals No Downtime' by Narba
Submitted on 2006-08-03 13:02:37 CST
I played the open beta of DDO and was quite frustrated by not being able to rest and heal anywhere in a dungeon. So I searched for dev feedback on not having regeneration. The dev response was that they wanted to eliminate downtime in the game. They said having to stop and rest to heal up was downtime and instead wanted a quick heal at certain points in the dungeon. I didn't agree with this since I ended up not surviving to a shrine, wasting a potion (they said they were rare) before or after I found a shrine, or exiting the dungeon to heal and having to start over.

I just listened to this podcast, and i'm sorry you won't be staying.
There is an auto attack, but it isn't as effecitve as attacking manually. Getting shoved through a dungeon by people who have done it before and only want the xp is a problem, but one i also had in WoW with the Deadmines. My favorite aspect of the game which I don't remember you mentioning is the loot aspect, where it is impossible to ninja loot items, everyone gets set aside loot. The voice chat also impressed me and i missed it when i started playing other mmos again.
To what Narba said, potions are far from rare, and once you get up to even mid levels you can buy more than you will know what to do with. Money is also not very rare, so gold farmers won't do well there. In DDO you have to learn to pace yourself and not zerg, as that wastes health and mana, although some clerics can restore both.
I know i have been finding groups quicker in DDO than WoW, the LFG feature is something i miss in other games.
I agree about the forums though, they do get close to wow badness sometimes, just remember the good people are too busy playing to post there.

'DDO Loot system!' by Brent

Darn! We totally forgot to talk about the awesome loot system in DDO. I think it is extremely well done.

I have found the LFG time in DDO significantly decreased since the first time I played. I'm not sure why that is, but it is a definite improvement.

you have to have a good looting system with all the intricate traps you got to work thru to get to them, but i wish you could give up your looting rights since i'm something of a stragler and explorer both and sometime i didn't even know where the treasure chest was at being looted, i guess that's my fault tho.
I enjoyed the old everquest where you had to trust people and yeah you'd have people rip you off but you'd blacklist them, and thus bringing the regular community closer together. i guess games are too big now for that sort of thing?

they need to have all those magical items unidentified. people can wait 'til they stumble into town to find out what they really got or have a mage use his valuable mana to identify. this hey this is what ya got with no form of working out what it is, is very bad pen & paper d&d. makes me wonder if there's even cursed items.
