Dofus, a tactical MMORPG from Ankama Studio (based in France) is one of the more unique games to release in recent memory. A test drive reveals an anime-fueled, professionally developed game with character and creativity to spare. However, I didn't care for it one bit.
This must be the Renaissance of 2.5D, for Dofus uses this brand of visuals as the soon to be released Dark Solstice does. With tech that is circa-1989 (but served under a flash engine), graphics crossed between Final Fantasy and Pokemon, and music ripped directly from the Smurf's Greatest Hits I can state with considerable confidence that Dofus will be an enormous success, but not in the US market.
Game play is smooth though not intuitive. The world is quite large and well designed. The animations have urgency and dynamics that satisfy. (whizz bang schwoop and pow!) The combat system is challeging (a turn based system that breaks the user out into a special combat window similar to the Final Fantasy console games) and stategical, though again, it is not easy to grasp at first.
Perhaps the best thing about this game is that there is a free version that one can play indefinitely. I recommend this, because this game will not be for everyone and it will be best to try before you buy. All in all the system is well developed and a more than acceptable distraction, but Dofus will not be stealing market share from the Warcrafts, Everquests, and Lineages of the MMORPG world. Players of the aforementioned systems simply will not appreciate the dramatic step down in overall sophistication, even if they recognize that the game is reasonably well put together.
