Spellborn is taking beta applications.
"The initial Beta phase consists of Beta contest winners, active community members, Spellborn Developers and their friends and family. Later phases of beta will include larger numbers of applicants, and will be influenced by factors such as hardware specifications, prior testing experience, and most importantly activity within the community. In Q1 2006 we plan to hold a larger open/stress phase of beta in which the majority of beta applicants should be able to assist (the number of applicants involved in this period will depend on our needs). "
The beta application is unlike any beta signup I've ever seen. Applicants are put through 5 screens of questioning regarding gaming history and play preferences. Additionally, a dump of the DirectX capabilities of the system is required.
Dutch development studio, Khaeon Games, certainly has the swagger of a serious game development group. Everything from the website to the screenshots promises an enlighted play experience with tension and atmosphere to spare. Playability is expected to be solid, as I have yet to see a game system developed under the UnrealĀ® Engine2? that failed to perform admirably. Additionally, Khaeon has wisely scaled back the model complexity by adopting a heavily stylized character design much as Blizzard has done with World of Warcraft. The end result is a cartoonish, yet attractive and unique avatar model. The promise of cool looking avatars from day one has vain players like myself eager to jump into the pixel-flesh that Spellborn will unveil in the first half of 2006.
